String height

We've got a topic for pretty much everything else, but very little matters more to how you play than string height. So how's yours? High or low? Medium? Suspension bridge?



Personally, mine's always been on the high side of medium. I really like having the strings a little higher for rhythm stuff, but it fucks me from trying to do sweeps and stuff.

Mine's pretty high overall and esp. on the bass side of the neck. I like to feel where i am going. But indeed sweeps are more difficult.

It may come across as weird, but i set up my action on the tension i need to put on the strings to fret them if that makes any sence to you. The tension i like on the stings is a balance between spring tension, gauge and action.

A lot of folks look at a low as possible setup, I look for the sweetspot in resistance/tension.



*edit* so action may be different according to which guitar i am setting up as i am feeling it out rather than measuring.

As long as I've had my Jackson RR3 with the floyd I've had a really low action which I love, I thought it felt great for rhythm and soloing. I feel like the action is a little higher with these 10's though, I think I messed up my sweet spot when I was setting it up.

There's an old interview with Trey in a Guitar World that I have, all the way back to 2002. He said something to the effect of "I like a little higher action on my guitars, it makes it a little harder to solo, but the notes seem to 'sing' a little better."

I switched to a high height for a bit, but medium tends to suit me best.

on my bass i have my action as low as i can possibly have it. i get a lot of clacking noise, and hated it at first, but now i've intergrated it into part of my overall tone. i have a lot of treble on my bass' eq and just a tiny bit more mids. gives me a nice gritty, yet thick tone. makes tapping a lot easier, and the strings are a lot easier to pop when i need to utilize that technique here and there.



on my guitar it's a little higher. i'm a bass player, not a guitarist, so having the action a little high doesn't bother me. i'm used to putting in a little more effort to fret because of my years of being a bassist. i write most everything on my bass, so when i go to play it on guitar, the guitar does more of the rhythm than the bass does, if that makes any sense.

Same. I just hated that clanky tone first, but now I love it. I have a lot of mids in my eq and less bass and treble (kinda like a sad face) it gives more clarity to the notes.

are you a finger style picker or a pick picker? i use my fingers, the three finger attack. I'd use four to pick but my pinkies are freakishly small. work good for fretting, thank satan.

Finger style (3 fingers). I can't use my pinky either.
