MA begins recording new album

Post by vO)))id »

From Blabbermouth's Twitter:

<!-- m -->http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbe ... nt=Twitter<!-- m -->

Florida-based death metal veterans MORBID ANGEL entered Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida on June 22 with engineer Erik Rutan (former MORBID ANGEL guitarist and producer for such bands as CANNIBAL CORPSE, MISERY INDEX and GOATWHORE) to begin recording their ninth full-length album. Due late 2010/early 2011 via Season Of Mist, the new CD will be the band's first to be recorded without longtime drummer Pedro "Pete" Sandoval, who recently underwent back surgery for a deteriorating disc problem. Filling in for him on a temporary basis is Tim Yeung, who has previously played with DIVINE HERESY, ALL THAT REMAINS, NILE, HATE ETERNAL and VITAL REMAINS).

Professionally filmed video footage of MORBID ANGEL's entire June 27, 2009 performance at the Rock al Parque festival at Parque Simon Bolivar in Bogota, Colombia can be viewed at this location. A clip of the new song "Nevermore" is available below. (Note: The footage originally aired on Colombia's Canal Capital.)

MORBID ANGEL guitarist Trey Azagthoth last year spoke to Revolver magazine about the band's upcoming album, which will mark the Florida-based group's first release to feature bassist/vocalist David Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

"We played the new song 'Nevemore' on the last tour and that kind of shows where our heads are at," he said. "I'd say it's like an assemblage of all sorts of stuff from the catalog and some new influences. I listen to a lot of hardcore [techno] music now — the fuckin' serious, artistic stuff, not that crap you hear at the clubs. That stuff has impact and it's really extreme. Even if there's no guitar in it or no real drums, the energy coming out of the speakers is amazing." He added, "All I can say is, when it's ready, it's going to be extreme and outside the b.ox. And, hopefully, the songs will inspire people to look deeper inside themselves for 'the stuff' and to tap that potential that we as human beings have."

Although MORBID ANGEL has yet to announce a title for the new CD, its name will likely begin with the letter "I", in keeping with the band's tradition of titling their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989's "Altars of Madness", and continuing through "Heretic".

MORBID ANGEL played its first show with new touring guitarist, ZYKLON's longtime axemeister Destructhor (a.k.a. Thor Anders Myhren), on June 22, 2008 at the Hellfest in Clisson, France.

Regarding Destructhor's addition to the band's touring lineup, Vincent said, "We had a fairly long audition process. We looked long and hard at this. We decided when we began this process that it was gonna be a unanimous decision. We had several people [apply for the job] — very good players from, really, all over the world — and we got a video from Thor — the same video that we asked from all the different players; the same two songs — and some people didn't get past the initial discussion stage, and then some people went on to the next stage and it ended up that the band unanimously felt that Thor would be the best guitarist for the band."

if they want to release it late 2010, early 2011 then they need to step on it.

recordings can take a long while because there are so many factors that you cannot predict beforehand. eventhough Erik is a very professional and experienced engineer/producer, you can never predict problems during the process, but you can narrow them down a lot.

i guess the band is very well prepared and know their material through and through, which ofcourse makes it a lot easier and faster.... they're a professional band anyway. Maybe Tim's contribution may cause some more time to record? Not sure, I don't know how much they rehearsed together, since Tim said he wanted to get very close to Pete's sound while adding his own flavour (which is great imo).

I think mixing and mastering such an album will take the most time... they're all incredible perfectionists and i hope they will have enough time to make the album just the way they want.

I'm a little dismayed that they are just beginning to record, as I figured they'd be nearly done by now, but at least it's a start.

I think they've been 'ready' for some time (maybe a year or 2, maybe around when 'Nevermore' surfaced), but were being held up by Pete - not knowing if he could play, and wanting to wait for their longtime co-worker & fellating lover...?

When he gave 'his notice', they booked Mana and are heading in....

the time-frame & order of things occurring makes me think this...

FINNALY!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't be happier!!! this is awazome!!

I'm very glad Erik is behind it!! he really knows what Morbid is all about and how it should sound like.

I kinda knew it was going to be Mana studios and Eric. it was kinda obvious.

I got your point, but the band knows what it should sound like. MA doesn't need anyone to tell them how they should sound, but I agree that Erik can ofcourse relate to it like nobody else.

I'm looking forward to the vocals. Erik's vocal production is always fucking savage, and I can't wait to see what he does with Dave's vocals.

I don't think the recording will take long. The guys always go into the studio 100% prepared and don't fuck around. If this was done by mid-july, I wouldn't be surprised.

You're probably right. A death metal studio budget is not like a Metallica studio budget. They aren't going to show up, write pieces of songs for 18 months, record 35 tracks, and then whittle it down to the 11 least objectionable ones while Bob Rock sits there and rings the register. Look in just about any CD insert. The "recorded over" period average is what, three weeks?

It's an awesome thing that Erik is going to produce it. I love the production on both I, Monarch and Fury & Flames. I wonder what guitars Trey will use. His new dean stuff or the classics like UV7B and InstaGib. I hope there is alot of 7 string songs. :piss2:

I'm hoping to be blown away, I'm also prepared to be (a little) disappointed. I doubt that anything can live up to our vertiginous expectations.

I can still remember very well back in '03 when MA announced they had begun recording the "H" album, code named H2K3.

It was also about these time of the year in june when they started recording. took 'em about a month to record, and it was then released late september

So, I think I'm gonna make room in my agenda for september/october, to have lots of time available to listen to the new masterpiece!!
