Brutality with real singing?

Post by Shredlord »

Are there any super-fruital/technical bands (Hate Eternal, Decrepit Birth, Necrophagist, Brain Drill, etc.) with an actual singer along the lines of Dio? I find myself liking growled vocals less each day.

There's a band called Electro Quarterstaff who are pretty good who have no vocals at all. That's about as close to your request as I can get without resorting to Nevermore :redneck:

Singing in place of growls would be, if anything, a distraction or a gimmick. There are instances where it works, kind of, for thrash bands. Think "Pray For Death" by Heathen.

Just for kicks, I'll throw in "Ready To Strike" by Jag Panzer.

Fast...yeah. You can do fast. Heavy is possible, but even Dio was heavy. fruital? I doubt it. There was a lot wrong with The Unspoken King, not the least of which was the band's attempt to shoehorn a bad vocalist and worse singer into formerly fruital music.

This is the extent to which I've heard singing work in death metal, and some will disagree with even that assumption. Listen to the chorus, and then imagine trying to sing the entirety of it, nevermind the whole damn song.

Singing can encompass a lot of emotions, but pure, dripping venom is not one of them.

FYI, that harmonized portion during the solo in "Speed Of Darkness" rocks all your balls off.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. (He's referring to Excarnum, my former instrumental death metal band). Instrumental would probably would be my first preference. I just thought it would be an interesting experiment to combine brutality with singing! All this attention on Dio lately, and my renewed interest in him, just got me to thinking.

Closest I can think of the description is Fear Factory...but I gather that's not really what this thread is all about.

That seems to be as close to clean vocals with fruital music as this thread is going to get. It's not a place I can say I like being.

It's not fruital enough...plus, I had that CD years ago...the singer is annoying!
