People just love their fucking music here. There are like 20 small/medium venues that regular host live music and about half of those somewhat regularly host metal/hardcore/punk shows. And if a show stops in the official city of the chicago cubs, there is about a 90% chance their routing also brings them through Minnesota and they are pretty much guaranteed a good turnout. Also, you can blame bands like Prince, Bob Dylan and Hüsker Dü for really putting the place on the map, not to mention the venue First Avenue which has been open for over 50 years and hosted basically anyone who has been anyone before they made it big - they also own and operate like 5 other venues in town so they benefit from having a large selection of booking options for bands on tour

Blackbraid / Lamp of Murmuur / Dödsrit on Sunday.

Dödsrit from Sweden/Netherlands opened things up with some good old melodic black metal similar to Spectral Wound or Mgla - really set the mood for the rest of the night. Lamp of Murmuur were next - a one man band from California with hired musicians - similar to Immortal they absolutely crushed it playing hard and fast with lots of movement on stage, they had a pit going most of their set as well. Finally Blackbraid, who I’ve now seen 3 times burst onto the stage - this was their first headlining tour and they def live up to the hype they’ve built up over the years. Technically another one man band but the hired musicians are the same ones I’ve seen with him the other two times lol. If you know nothing about Blackbraid just know that they’re a Native American themed black metal band who has not only put out 3 excellent albums since their inception but also puts on highly energetic live shows as well. Highly recommend if given the chance.

I went and saw Vader / Kataclysm / Malevolent Creation / Skeletal Remains on Saturday. Probably my tenth time seeing Vader, they still fucking kill it live. They actually played a lot of older songs this time around, some of which I hadn't seen em play in quite a while - so that was cool. Kataklysm kicked ass as always, they also played Shadows and Dust this time around (they hadn't the last couple of times I saw them). Malevolent Creation was performing as a 3-piece (if you keep up on metal news you know why) but still kicked ass. besides Vader, I think Skeletal Remains were my favorite band of the night - very strong MA / Death vibes without coming across as a clone/worship band, I'll definitely go see those dudes again.

Something a little different this Friday - going to see Lorna Shore / The Black Dahlia Murder / Shadow of Intent / Peelingflesh. Should be fun.

i'm sure you're at least familiar with madulin of the well, kayo dot is their successor. and yeah they're playing minneapolis on the 16th. not sure who the opener for the earlier dates on the tour will wind up being, xasthur is doing support on the west coast though.

i would strongly recommend getting tobypilled between now and then and going, the albums that are pretty much universally beloved are choirs of the eye and hubardo. they are very accessible starting points if you're approaching it from a metal angle, as is moss grew from 2021. the full discography is pretty much unimpeachable though

first, i saw lorna shore. not by choice. just went along with a mate who was going alone. i thought they sucked. i didn't get it.

second, SIGH. well, great set, most interesting thing is they brought their kids. so two little gremlin japanese kids running around the stage the whole time in kimonos doing horns to the audience. very funny vibes. mum and dad were performing but had to also like keep an eye on their kids. they gave them a tamborine and a bongo drum to play along.

the theatrics, costume, instruments, energy, was fucking ace, and made all the more absurd by the children. those little goblins.

caught the Lorna Shore tour on Friday. the venue was huge and jam packed - the first band went on at 6:30 and the place was already full! Peeling Flesh opened who were fucking sick slam - had everyone headbanging and moshing it up early, great energy brought from an opener. Next up was Shadow of Intent who were pretty good, I saw them a few years ago and thought they were better then. next up was The Black Dahlia Murder who I saw a bunch back in the day but hadn't seen with their new vocalists yet - they were pretty good, lots of energy. Lorna Shore was next and thought they killed it, great stage presence - not the biggest fan of their newest album but they played a lot from the prior album which was cool. my biggest gripe is actually with the venue itself - probably the worst mid-size venue in the entire state as far sound, sight-lines, ease of access, etc are concerned. all of the bands could have been louder and had better mix - but whatever.

Next up in a month is Omnium Gatherum and then Ne Obliviscaris a couple days later.

i saw blood incantation and secret chiefs 3 last night

fucking awesome, words can't describe what a good time i had. went with an old mate, we rented an apartment near the venue, drank hard at one of my favourite bars beforehand, then bumped into blood incantation on the street walking to the venue. sound was fucking amazing, it was like listening to their album. played the whole of absolute elsewhere, giza power plant, and a couple of others.

secret chiefs 3 were tight as fuck and heaps of fun. metal crowd loved it. goofy as

It's crazy how much Blood Incantation have elevated themselves the last few years.

In a week I'm going to see one of my favorite melodeath bands Omnium Gatherum with Aether Realm and Hinayana followed by a couple of days later Ne Obliviscaris with Rivers of Nihil and Psycroptic

i remember you liked omnium gatherum. chalky the singer from early psycroptic who did that great performance on the scepter of the ancients is doing a concert in melbz next month where he and a bunch of random play through that whole album. it's one of those shows that can't use the name psycroptic so it's all done in allusions.

Testament/Overkill/Destruction, Lamb of God, Dark Tranquillity In late March. Hoping to at least go to Testament and DT. We shall see.

Testament / Overkill / Destruction last night, fucking killer. Destruction and Overkill were awesome of course, and Testament hasn't lost a step. In addition to newer material (the Para Bellum songs are fucking SICK! also got to hear Infanticide A.I. twice because they fucked it up half way through lol), Testament played a lot of deep cuts as well with the only regulars seemingly being Into the Pit, Low, and Over The Wall with lots of lesser played older songs.

The LoG show was massive - hadn't seen them since they toured with Slayer like 8 years ago.The Bogg was awesome, as always - really cool seeing them play to a huge crowd.

The DT show was fucking great, lots of deep cuts from The Gallery and Character albums. they surprisingly only played 2 newer songs!

Been wanting to see Emperor for 26 years at this point, finally got the opportunity and they were so fucking great, I found myself smiling often while they were playing. Blood Incantation also played for a full hour, this was probably the best I’ve seen them despite also seeing them headline last year - they’ve gotten really tight.

Last show I seen was Cannibal Corpse with Immolation and Dark Funeral. Haljarmadr was brillian on vocals. Soaring over every hill and valley that the band was putting down. I got pics, but, they aren't too clear. Seeing immolation was the really cool as well. I never knew Vigna was so good live, he can shred. Ross was cool to see as well. You could feel the intensity of his vocals. He sounds better live than on record.

Saw Carpenter Brut and Health last week. It was a sold out show and the venue was absolutely packed to the rafters. It was a co-headline so CB and Health both played headliner sets. Health was way heavier than I was expecting or remembered from a few years ago, I enjoyed them. CB was fucking excellent though, solid setlist of new and old, 10/10 would go see again.

They did a show here at Roadburn last weekend.
I wasnt able to go but HEALTH is so awesome. Glad to hear they were heavier live.

Amon Amarth and Dethcock was a lot of fun. enjoyed the opener Castle Rat too. Amon Amarth fucking owned and I was never a big dethclock fan, but they were cool. I was also high as shit during their set.

the next week a coworker brought me to Electric Callboy, it was honestly kind of an insane show. lots of fun, embrace the cheese.

a few weeks later I caught Kreator and Carcass and Cold Steel, hell yeah.

then last week I saw PeelingFlesh and Kruelty along with some hardcore bands. My body still hurts from that one.

not really any shows in the summer until august, then it's jam packed August / September / October:
