Only differences are I got the Ryzen 7 7700X, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120SE cooler, and MSI Pro B650-B mobo. I got the Lian Li LANCOOL 216 case in black non-RGB and the cooling is balls great.

I just did the 'X pattern' of applying thermal paste like I always did. I did have to limit the overall square space on where I was applying the paste as opposed to the more traditional CPU shapes that I've handled as the n00b in me was trying not to get any paste onto the open portions where there is circuitry.

i'm hoping so, they just upsold me on the cpu cooler, they said all the right things about how fast and big my cpu is and how it needs something bigger to handle it. i was like yeah take my money bitch and stop whining at me

Micron just announced they will be shutting down the Crucial line of products and will be focusing on providing for AI data centers. The others may follow suit but will still keep their commercial RAM business lines albeit with less focus and support than before.

RAM has already jumped prices where I live. Pretty soon it's gonna be GPUs as well those also need memory chips.

NVIDIA's AI data center business is now more profitable than their gaming business so they may be lying low soon in making GPUs. Whether AMD and the newly-resurrected Intel line of GPUs will fill that gap quickly remains to be seen but I imagine if I will be building a new PC 4-7 years from now, it will probably have an Radeon GPU and it will be ridiculously overpriced.

I bought an Acer laptop with a 17" screen in 2011 and it's still going strong now...only hardware change I made was swapping out the old HDD for a 2TB SSD a few years back.

I still have my 8 year old Dell laptop with one of those old i7 CPUs. It was what the my former employer gave me to use and I just use it mainly as a backup nowadays. I put a 32 GB RAM module in it. I'm thinking of actually installing Linux on it just to play around.

On a business laptop used as a desktop.

I have used laptops exclusively for the last 20 years. I am in the market for some kinda Mac desktop though. Some powerful 3-4 year old ones cost less than sticks of RAM these days, strange world we live in.

if you just need a daily driver the mini is generally fine, with the caveat that contemporary macOS just completely shits the bed periodically throughout its release cycle. sequoia is in a good spot right now and i'm hanging onto it for dear life, it was a disaster on release and i'm not eager to repeat that experience with tahoe, which i get daily nags to upgrade to.

I had the m4 mini for a hot minute, shit ran hotter than a frying pan and got loud for some reason, maybe I got a lemon.

Probably going for an older studio for the better thermals and more ram for the same dollar amount as the minis now. I've been a certified linux bro for a good while so I can get my hands dirty when something shits the bed, but fuck me if I have to go through the pain of getting a usb audio interface and VST's with a wine emulator layer to work with Reaper on linux again. I haven't done anything with music in a while because of it.

absolutely incredible that 25 years later audio still doesn't work with linux. it was the #1 pain point when i dabbled with it as a teenager and apparently they still haven't figured it out

but yeah i got the mini specifically to have a logic machine because reaper to me always felt like the linux of DAWs, abundantly powerful but hideous and inscrutable to operate

I got it working now but it's a housa cards that will come down the moment I let the 3-4 month backlog of fedora updates through Too many 3rd party things to get VST's and low latency interface drivers to work from random repos and dependencies.

Fractional text scaling issues also make some VST windows impossible to read so it's definitely way more trouble than it was worth. As a daily driver I love fedora though, nice feeling not having constant telemetry, forced restarts and subscription services not continually blowing up my screen.

text scaling in linux is one of the last things pissing me off about it. i use a giant oled monitor and have been experiencing issues with open office scaling crap. i keep inching closer to using linux as a daily driver. i have a really nice cachyos (arch) setup on a separate hard drive but i still have to use windows for work crap for now.
