naw i haven't seen salo. it was the piano and LCR. the piano is one of my favourite films.

night of the hunter is a hardcore american classic

ahhh yeah of course. the piano was superb, i gambled on the 4k criterion release and it was a hit. will be checking out more of the campions next year fasho

and yeah the night of the hunter is an easy favorite. hard to believe it was a one and done, i've struggled to think of another filmmaker debut as mature and refined as that. the 'chase' sequence all along the river was incredible, especially the scene at the barn. i am very picky when it comes to horror but man oh man does this one do it for me

yooo el topo was NUTS. they had a 35mm screening at the harvard film archive back in october, i think i had a better idea of what it was about when i'd just read the synopsis vs leaving, hahah. i think jodorowsky had to play the lead because nobody else would do it

maybe the most "they actually could not make that movie again" thing i've seen in recent memory

been a very busy month, since the last update i have watched:

paris, texas (again, this time the glorious new 4k restoration)

the eagle shooting heroes
kings of pastry

probably gonna knock out a couple more today/tonight

You are right about el topo a fellating lover was bugging bme to watch it because I love arthouse and unusual movies.

El topo I still cant describe other than acid trip the movie

Ghost dog is another weird one but not worth your time imo horrible writing.

Im looking for character driven films that are not generic or unique stories. I tend to like shows and anime with good well developed characters even if the story is thin. I used to watch quite a few dramas like silver lining playbook m, doubt, and the post. My fellating lover recd poor things and the favorite for more recent ones i may like.

Im fine with weird arty stuff or dark comedies too too Im open minded to anything thats not a halmark style rom com thats the one thing i cannot get into.

Under the Skin is so underrated I need to watch it again soon been years

happiness (an entirely character-driven film whose characters are all extremely fucked up, an excellent watch but maybe not the easiest. an overwhelmingly dark comedy)
magnolia has a lot of similarities to happiness in terms of its overall structure, though it has one very narrow momentary flaw that nonetheless irked the shit out of me. but not the worst way to kill 3 hours
werckmeister harmonies (if you're in the mood for slow weird arty stuff, something like 35 total shots across ~2.5 hours. it's absolutely gorgeous and oppressively bleak, but that's just bela tarr i guess)
fallen leaves is a great romcom which isn't very hallmark and has the added bonus of some minor background nods to finnish metal bands
and i'll throw out the red shoes if you haven't seen it because it's just one of the best and most engrossing things i've ever seen, absolutely fires on all cylinders start to finish

Ive seen happiness it is definitely not for everyone and bleak is an understatement. Spookyrice’s review on youtube made me watch it.

Ive not seen the other recs will check them out, appreciate it.

The words "subtle" and "unsettling" kept coming to mind. The sound design was excellent. It felt very uncanny valley/surreal, and the fact that it wasn't only made it feel more like it was.

hell yeah

very glad you enjoyed it, TRS is one of the most engrossing things i've ever seen. the central ballet sequence is so fucking good. the amount of work that went into the restoration is unreal, they used the original camera negatives which, because it was shot in technicolor meant they had to fix up three times the raw material vs a conventional film

it has continued to be a very busy month. since the last update i have watched:

yeah solid stuff throughout. almodovar has yet to disappoint, peeping tom was a very cool metacinematic piece and it's tragic it tanked powell's career. also didn't know previously that the main character was played by the son of karl bohm, who was a prominent conductor in the mid 20th century (and probably a huge nazi, whoops!).

demon pond was great as well, gonna be checking out more shinoda next year i think. it is an extremely japanese film in that it adapts kabuki into a cinematic context, and it's absolutely gorgeous with some extraordinarily cool visual effects for its time.

eyes wide shut and no country were rewatches, i think the latter (the new 4k restoration which is incredible) actually exceeds my earlier impressions which were already quite lofty, and the former didn't hold up quite as well. i think it's a very well constructed film and there's a lot of formal elements that delight. the parapolitical reading still excites and intrigues, the central relationship drama much less so. also the hard-on bearer that played nick nightingale eventually went on to direct tar, a connection i didn't make previously, so that's neat

masahiro shinoda stuff i don't think is generally well known, criterion barely bothered to write a blurb for himiko. but it's in keeping with his usual fare of using film to extend the more traditional japanese dramatic arts, in the case of himiko it's based on butoh dance

ASPM is a jacques demy film which asks the question 'what if marcello mastroianni got pregnant'

pistachio wars is yasha levine's just-released doc examining the nexus of california agribusiness, water politics and foreign policy, and the billionaire resnick family at its center

l'atalante is an old timey french love story from the 1930s and iirc was jean vigo's only feature film

larisa is a short film by elem klimov about his dead wife, larisa shepitko, an evidently underappreciated but notable figure in soviet cinema in the 60s-70s. i will watch some of hers when i get the nerve up for it, but come and see was said to be something of a response to her last completed feature, the ascent. so i am expecting distress

the art life is a documentary about david lynch which covers the period of childhood up to eraserhead. it's alright i guess and has a few very funny moments but i was kinda eh oh it

and celine and julie go boating is jacques rivette's 3 hour and 15 minute story about two magical friends

what did you think of anora? i saw it in the theater back in november, i liked it but i didn't love it straight out of the gate, but i am kind of itching to revisit it. might grab the criterion edition when it drops in april, we shall see. still the weakest PdO winner i've seen tho (dancer in the dark maybe the worst time i've had watching one, but holy moly it's great)

I thought Anora was ok. Was it worth the hype? No but most movies aren't Ill probably rewatch it at some point I didnt dislike it I just didnt click with it. I need to try to go in blind or at least minimize expectations I find movies Im told are supposed to be good I unfairly go into super jaded lately.
