thinking about traveling to Japan next year

always wanted to go and looking at exchange rates it actually seems pretty feasible - the plane ticket would be the most expensive part (and there are direct flights to Tokyo from where I live, which is cool).
first I need to renew my passport though.

Was the reason for staying in small town outside of the city due to availability? Because costs doesn’t look like to be a huge issue. I wouldn’t mind doing that, I actually want to take the trains while I’m there

I do not speak any Japanese, did you find it easy to get around? I would probably learn some very basic sayings and signage but otherwise will probably relay on the translator on my phone from what I’ve seen, at least in the cities, it seems like a lot of signage is bilingual Japanese / English.

signs are easy, with translate apps even easier. everything works and is fine to figure out. there's heaps of accommodation in all styles. avoid the business hotels as they are tiny and poor value.

japan is like a high tech country from the 1980s that hasn't changed much. it has the U.S. vibe sometimes of fax machines, cash-only stores, houses are starting to get a bit run down. houses are actually dirt cheap there at the moment cos a lot of the generation that built the country's wealth have recently died and left a surfeit of property no one wants, falling-apart 80s houses in the countryside. my fellating lover just bought one, i wish i was in a position to do so

yeah, was watching some Japanese travel videos on youtube and one thing that struck me is how fucking clean and free of litter it was everywhere. these were just amateur iphone shot videos, not some pro-travel bullshit - so it was quite striking.

yeah man you can spend a whole holiday in osaka or tokyo basically just eating awesome food, drinking great booze, seeing shows, doing tourist shit. but the countryside is awesome too

if i lived in osaka i would become a daily drinker alcoholic, no question about it. so many fucking bars. so much booze. i love sake and rice based booze, you know i've written books about it, and there's like 10 bars in every building in the city in osaka, the izakawa are amazing, if i lived there i would forget about having a car, just cycle, train, walk, eat out every night, fuck yeah, get smashed all the time
