actually since cloutier wasn't on the first two albums or the demo, and since lemay and hurdle wrote a majority of the music on obscura (and lemay and mongrain for fwth), cloutier really wasnt as big a part as you think.
yes his bass playing rapes and the songs he wrote rape, but put alex webster in this band back then and they'd probably rape just as much.
I have trust that lemay knows what he's doing with his own band.
If you really think artists always make the best decisions, then there is no point debating you.
First two albums weren't really unique, but the second album was good. Cloutier's playing made Gorguts Gorguts.
lemay founded the band. why would he fuck it up now?
marston is a great musician and as long as he doesn't take over the show then I'm fine with him taking the bassist role.
and cloutier's playing didn't "make gorguts gorguts." his playing was only one piece of the puzzle, and honestly you can't say it would have been any better or worse if webster or digiorgio were in that spot instead. besides the fact that cloutier didn't write a whole lot. to my knowledge he wrote some riffs here and there and one full song on fwth.
A band is usually just not one person, unless it is a solo project, or a shitty band. Cloutier was HUGE on the Gorguts sound. Post-95 tech death that didn't sound like shit? Yep, that was Gorguts. Bass playing was phenomenal.
Webster I feel is overrated, and Digiorgios tone is not appealing.

Re: Gorguts
dang, obscura sounds fucking awful
there should be a law against bands formed around a shitty premise, taking their names from amazing albums. its misleading!

Re: Gorguts
ok i just listened to them and i was right, god what an awful band. nothing but more aimless necrophagist-style tech tripe, oh but hey there's some quiet parts and an acoustic guitar thrown in there, and now they're impersonating ITP-style Death! what really sets this band apart isn't just their instrumental mastery, oh no. they take it to the next level by shoehorning a bunch of disjointed, incongruous elements together; that's progressive, man.
fuck that band, i'm gonna listen to some gorguts and it will be a good time

This is the problem with all modern tech death. It's just musical masturbation.

Re: Gorguts
not my fault that obscura's derivative fagbait
we can humor zim because he is 16 and doesn't understand music, but nobody else has an excuse, especially longtime MABB regulars. if obscura is cool, i guess opeth is OK as well, and anyone with two functioning neurons to rub together knows intuitively that's not true.
gorguts on the other hand is fucking brilliant, so lets continue discussing them.
