i have watched the following films recently:

heat (still fucks, not really the style of movie that really gets me going itp but its reputation is well-deserved)
tampopo (magnificent, one of the best i've seen this year)
the merchant of four seasons (pretty good, first fassbinder i've seen)
palermo shooting (bit of a stinker, first wenders i didn't care for at all)
persona (good god maybe one of the best i've ever seen. gonna be marinating on this one for a while. incredible photography, peak performances from liv ullmann & bibi andersson, everything here is a hit)

oh and also i realized i have seen one takeshi kitano thing because i discovered he acted in merry christmas mr lawrence, which i saw in the theater approximately eleven months ago

I dug it quite a bit. My wife nailed it when she said it reminded her of House. The hallucination scenes in particular were awesome and had an Altered States vibe to them. I still need to see Devils.

Persona is fucking awesome. Easily my favorite Bergman flick. I can definitely see David Lynch and Cronenberg taking inspiration from it.

ryusuke hamaguchi, it was an adaptation of a murakami short story (which i have not read and probably won't). if you like three hour dramas about a hard-on bearer with a dead wife and a really bitchin' saab 900 turbo, it is the film for you

i loved them all, my favorite genre of movie is now anything that reduces me to tears

klute - the first of pakula's paranoia trilogy, good paranoid cinema but wasn't so into the characterization
let the sunshine in - a not very enjoyable movie about a woman that is a trainwreck, a miss for claire denis
je tu il elle - chantal akerman is naked in this one a lot

Longlegs was not scary it was kinda generic, going for the lowest hanging fruit. It is worth seeing if you want to laugh at nic cage at his cagiest. His scenes i was really trying not to laugh just in case someone in the theater was taking yhe movie seriously.

Maxxine is much better but is 1000% style over substance. I am totally fine with that since movies are visual mediums but its def not for everyone.

watched godland last night and it's fucking fantastic if you want to see the majesty and terror of nature filtered through the lens of the icelandic landscape. and also a satisfying critique of intra-european colonialism, though perhaps the intra- presupposes its accession into the modern-day conception of europe via those very same colonialist processes, also our tendency to categorize cultures along broad racial lines & etc

I felt his performance was another movie literally half the theater was busting out laughing at him which of course brought everyone out of what was supposed to be a serious film.

It’s only worth seeing for him 6/10 is indeed correct.

I saw Spoorloos at the cinema. One of the better dutch movies, I know the catalogue is thin Saw it before way long ago, I guess '88 I remembered it differently, the french actor was really good and it is mainly about him. Johanna is super hot I would watch it just for her

Is this worth a watch? I was avoiding it because for the longest time I thought it was a remake of Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Keitel

it's fucking incredible and i can't recommend it enough if you enjoy unhinged movies. i put it right up there with lisztomania, which is one of my absolute favorites where over-the-top cinema is concerned

it's technically not a remake, sequel or franchise installment, but it's quite clear the screenwriter was very familiar with the 1992 movie. he just convinced werner herzog that it was something else despite insisting on calling it 'bad lieutenant'. herzog had no direct experience with the original outside of knowing it existed, didn't want to be associated with it, and fought unsuccessfully to distance this movie from that one. it's an audaciously bizarre spectacle on so many levels, it's fantastic. put it at the top of your to-do list, you will not regret it.

tv is a money machine for a lot of involved parties and they want to keep it running for as long as humanly possible. if you can diffuse a story over ten seasons, each packed to the gills with filler rather than a single eventful one, well, why wouldn't you?
