Re: getting paid
i am paid weekly which is highly unusual in the US, this is i think the second job i've ever had that got weekly pay (the other being a union gig at a grocery store when i was in high school). i expect that is one more thing the new assembly line girlboss MBA squad that took over is aiming to change. they have been quite eagerly and rapidly reallocating employee compensation to themselves ever since they secured control of the board
and i am in the 22% tax bracket

Re: getting paid
Being paid weekly was the best. Always felt way easier to balance bills and life shit. Now I pay all my bills in 1 go (out of my commission check) and figure out the rest as best I can.jawn galliano wrote: ↑30 Apr 2024, 18:58i am paid weekly which is highly unusual in the US, this is i think the second job i've ever had that got weekly pay (the other being a union gig at a grocery store when i was in high school). i expect that is one more thing the new assembly line girlboss MBA squad that took over is aiming to change. they have been quite eagerly and rapidly reallocating employee compensation to themselves ever since they secured control of the board

Re: getting paid
a couple of months ago i threatened to quit over a lot of the high level management decisions, which was enough to secure a promotion and buy my loyalty for a bit longer. but i am rapidly re-orienting back to my previous career change posture. the new executive team is making an active and obvious effort to marginalize and drive out longterm employees, so there is a mutual hostility. and it is not a good way to go about living. it's a shame because while i'd never say i loved my job, i've settled into a very comfortable and mostly agreeable routine, i am very good at what i do, i get on well with my coworkers and my bosses all love me.
but the new executive team doesn't accept that working in this industry segment means accepting a lower salary, as everyone else in the company does. their vision is that they should be paid the same as a world-straddling listed company, and they're happy to push the rest of the company down toward retail wages, benefits and conditions to get theirs

Re: getting paid
they sound like a bunch of assholes
you have had a good run at that place, keep your eyes open for new pastures. i am also not sure about what 2025 will bring for me. i continue the writing, editing, researching thing, no steady 9-5 job since 2015. but my main editing gig which brings in the regular, reliable $3,000 a month is going to wrap up at the end of next year. i don't think i could survive on my other stuff without that, it is too irregular, so i would need to replace it with something. but what! and where!

one of my old high school buddies who flew in to my wedding from australia said, "this feels so weird, i feel guilty, this is the first time i have spent any serious money just on myself since i had my girls" (he has two daughters, now maybe 4 and 2 yrs old). i was like, fuck, being a parent sounds ... funMethuselah Honeysuckle wrote: ↑30 Apr 2024, 19:27Being paid weekly was the best. Re: getting paid
Yeah I get paid bi-weekly which is fine especially now that I’m making a lot more but previously I had a job that used to pay weekly and that was nice to always have regular cash flow, especially when I was broke as fuck lol. I have some friends who worked state jobs and only got paid monthly - They almost always were struggling to make ends meet by the end of the month despite getting that massive drop at the beginning of each month. (I had one fellating lover would cash out their entire check each month because they couldn’t control themselves with a debit card and instead had to allocate weekly spendings to themselves to make it work).

The price of existing is too god damn high here. I'm lucky and have a fairly low mortgage. But everything else is what kills me.User wrote: ↑30 Apr 2024, 20:41one of my old high school buddies who flew in to my wedding from australia said, "this feels so weird, i feel guilty, this is the first time i have spent any serious money just on myself since i had my girls" (he has two daughters, now maybe 4 and 2 yrs old). i was like, fuck, being a parent sounds ... funMethuselah Honeysuckle wrote: ↑30 Apr 2024, 19:27Being paid weekly was the best. $1240 - house payment
$1700 - health insurance for the family
$150-$300 - gas and electric
$150 - interwebs and streaming stuff
$225 - car insurance

I don't even like to think about what groceries cost me.

Re: getting paid
and that's just the premium cost of course. then you have to factor in the built-in out of pocket costs (usually several thousand dollars per year before insurance actually starts covering anything), medication copays, insurance and provider randomly teaming up to decide something isn't covered and you are on the hook for thousands of additional dollars, etc
