Dødheimsgard, Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, and Panopticon are the only ones that I’ve heard. Interestingly of the year end list published by the media that I’ve seen (revolver, decibel, etc) they included all of these bands EXCEPT Dying Fetus.

i don't even listen to much metal anymore but i decided to give Dødheimsgard- Black Medium Current a spin i'm only a few songs in but this doesn't sound like album of the year material and at times it feels like a stretch to call it black metal but i guess they have that avant-garde flag as well

i really think 'avant-garde' is being used loosely too often, yeah you're mixing jazz and industrial in your black metal, i don't think qualifies as "new and unusual"

yeah avant-garde is kind of a badly misused label in general. that said DHG was definitely my favorite metal album of last year, didn't listen to anything else on that list and doubt i will

a lot of new guys sound identical to travis now and travis hasn't done much to evolve either the last few albums so his particular brand which was once kind of unique is now just a dime a dozen. also they need to go with a new producer, they have used the same hard-on bearer for far too long and all the albums sound the same now
