What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
Seems like they aren't going for humor this time.

visually very impressive, but i do not have any want or need to play another reskin of GTA3. they've been flogging that formula for fully two decades now and i had my fill of it a long time ago

Looks promising. I really just want to play it to find out what happened to Tommy Vercetti and his gang in Vice City.

Re: What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
this is all anyone should take away from this trailer imo
i am cynical and jaded about games at this point but i don't see gta 6 doing anything new. i also don't expect the game to launch with nearly half the features of current gta 5 such as the online play, custom maps, etc.
i've played a lot of gta 5 but mostly online, the custom maps / games are really fun. i've also done a lot of co-op heists which are really fun. the loading times however are painfully long, long enough to not want to play.

Re: What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
yeah jaded is definitely the word. it's been true for a long time but i kinda held on just through pure momentum. but as a medium it's been stagnant for a very long time, to the extent that it has really seen any development it occurs almost entirely in the realm of commercialization and streamlining the addictive mechanisms that keep people on the treadmill. GTA5 being a prime example of that, and a big reason why i never spent any real time with it (i also just don't really enjoy the core gameplay of GTA)
i was pleasantly surprised that FF16 mostly avoided those traps, but the product they did deliver was severely hampered by trying to please too many people and continuing to simplify the game systems. it didn't really deliver on its FF roots, and while the core of the combat was excellent, the former problem meant that it never really developed much and got stale much earlier into the game than it should've.
after playing through the game over the course of like 3 weeks i just felt so drained and enervated by the experience, i packed up all my games and consoles and stuffed them in the closet. for the time being i think i'm just done with games altogether, been more than 4 months since i played anything and don't miss it in the slightest.

What makes you think they're not going for humour/satire? Literally everything in there was a play on what goes down in Florida, lol. There's going to be a lot of it in there for sure.
I loved the trailer. Seen it several times now and can't get enough of it. I usually don't care much for PR reveals, but Rockstar kills it with every trailer they release.

sure they are going for humor/satire, doesn't mean it won't be monetized to shit and half baked on release.
also while i'm being a cynic, i feel like a lot of "satire" these days is just direct references to real life events which is a total lack of actual creativity. a good handful of things from the trailer were just copied from real life viral videos.

yeah it's shockingly low-effort. "hey guys, remember that funny stuff you saw on the internet 5 years ago? we've got that! right here in the game! $70 btw"zim wrote: ↑09 Dec 2023, 03:23sure they are going for humor/satire, doesn't mean it won't be monetized to shit and half baked on release.

You have a different issue. Gaming itself is in a fine place right now, especially when you consider just how big 2023 has been for all sorts of games. Sure, there's a good reason to be jaded when it comes to the industry, and you'll have predatory publishers trying to mint you through the roof, such as Ubisoft, Warner Bros and some more, but that doesn't mean there isn't any genuine creativity around. Play better games, don't fall for PR, follow developers you like, and......play indie games. A lot of indie games.jawn galliano wrote: ↑06 Dec 2023, 03:41yeah jaded is definitely the word. it's been true for a long time but i kinda held on just through pure momentum. but as a medium it's been stagnant for a very long time, to the extent that it has really seen any development it occurs almost entirely in the realm of commercialization and streamlining the addictive mechanisms that keep people on the treadmill. Re: What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
yes indies exist and there are plenty of well-made indies, i don't deny that. i've even played a few!
i think it's certainly true the worst problems of the industry are most obviously manifest in the mainstream big-budget output, and for the most part i have always studiously avoided the really obvious offenders like EA/ubi etc.
but i think the dearth of creativity is extraordinarily broad. gaming in particular has always been heavily reliant on franchise titles, but for a time at least allowed for variation and development within those franchises. that's mostly gone now - it's just endless iterations of archetypes that all solidified during the PSX/PS2 era, but jazzed up with addiction hooks and minimaps and higher polycounts and texture resolutions. genre distinctions have long been collapsing, action games all turned into RPGs and RPGs all became action games (with the notable exception of megaten, but... why do we need more megaten games when it was already perfected in 2003?), it feels like anything with any real visibility has been slowly converging towards an undifferentiated homogenous blob.
fromsoft made a bet on cutting against those trends and struck gold (and of course spawned an enormous number of knockoffs of varying quality) but they've finally exhausted that formula. outside of that, i really don't think the household name tier of publishers have put out much of note over the last couple of generations, and i don't see that changing.
so yes, outside of that, there are indies that one can resort to, but by and large they're all sticking to the established formulae as well, just ones that have fallen out of fashion with the big publishers. yes, there are unique aesthetic approaches and some genuinely out-there ideas and just all-around good games! i dumped an irresponsible number of hours into dead cells and hades, and that's just scraping the surface with the blockbuster grade indies. if one is willing to do the work of seeking them out, i will grant there's plenty of great titles lurking beneath the surface. but i guess that's the other problem i have is i abhor basically the entire games ecosystem that exists outside of the games themselves - keeping up requires you to engage with so much brainless fandom behavior and the dreadful output of its enthusiast press (jesus fucking christ don't get me started on the ridiculous ad reel they dress up as 'game awards'), and i just can't be bothered with any of it anymore.
i dunno, i certainly don't begrudge anyone continuing to find enjoyment in the medium, nor do i look down on anyone for it. if it brings you genuine joy, by all means! but i don't get any of that out of it anymore, and if i'm being honest, outside of a very small handful of exceptions i haven't for a very long time.
yes i know i am the old man yelling at the cloud, i'm fine with that

they never get finished by developers
and then people buy them anyway

Re: What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
another reason i bailed is i finally accepted that i'm never going to break the pattern of finishing 1 game out of every 10 i purchase
but if studios cant be bothered to finish their games why should i be expected to

I believe the reason is that back when product was shipped on CDs, you had to get it right, there were fewer opportunities to patch. Now it is taken for granted that it gets downloaded, so it can "ship" as a mess and big patches can follow continuously to fix broken games.

And it's looking to me like the only folks left in the world who try to get it right on the first try with game releases are the Japanese.

Re: What do you think of the new GTA 6 trailer?
the size of games and patches is ridiculous. not only are games pushing 100gb but updates are commonly 5-20gb as well

yeah it's a brave new world, connected to the big trends in music and consumption in general
no more ownership, just renting rights, and a requirement to be online
