I am ready to pass judgement on BG3, my short review
I've played this game almost twice now, which means I finished it completely once, and then someway through the second playthrough I got closer to the end but got bored and left it incomplete. I feel ready to comment on my feelings.
- This is a good game, but it's not an all-time great like BG2. It is more so a version of Divinity Original Sin 2 with dnd features than it is a Baldur's Gate game.
- It notably excludes some major elements of a Baldur's Gate game, like strongholds.
- It has a much much smaller roster of companions, and even their storylines, development and quests are brief or not expanded upon.
- Epic scale adventures and quests that match BG2 are very few.
- The game was clearly launched unfinished.
- It does lack in personality and writing. The conversations are very simple.
- The roleplaying options are quite restrictive, that is, there very little incentive to play evil because you lose out on too many items, companions, quests and development.
- The replayability is no where near as much as it was for BG2. And I get the reason for that. Back in the days when there was not such a heavy emphasis on graphics, you could do a lot more with story, writing and options. That would be extremely difficult to do today. Nevertheless it is a shortcoming.

Re: I am ready to pass judgement on BG3, my short review
I loved this game a few months back and have spent many hours on it. However, now that I'm in Act 3, I got bored due to the lengthy quick reload times when rerolling for good dice rolls (which was a key part of the old BG games).

Yea that Act 3 is a big flaw in this game. It's bloated, boring, and you don't feel like you're progressing, just trying to wind things down by then.

our next session is this sunday morning. we just got into act 3. so far i can already tell it is shitter than what came before
we are having a lot of fun playing it through but yeah, it has its flaws for sure. it's like oddly too ambitious but also too limited, everything is vertical

Now play Disco Elysium. One of the best games ever, with some of the most brilliant writing, characters and world-building I've come across in a while. Up there in the top 5 gaming experiences in recent memory.

my friends started a campaign in this and are trying to get me to join but i'm not sure i will, in part due to my own newfound aversion to gaming but also due to the criticisms you all have raised of the game itself

it is a huge amount of fun to play multiplayer, it's still one of a kind engine-wise for that

Re: I am ready to pass judgement on BG3, my short review
we finished!
started the game in september, finished february 28. solid effort
our party was human lupus corvos, a barbarian fighter with the heart of an elk. he was always looking for somewhere to belong. always claimed to be a nature warrior but was actually raised in the suburbs. had unrequited love for—
tern, the elf necromancer rogue hotty, who was lesbian, and consistently refused lupus' advances. she died nearly every battle and caused 99% of all reloads. tern loved to run away from her two companions and get into trouble. number one hobby. spent 50% of the campaign dead
and finally dwarf seppo, the oathbroken paladin, AC tank, holy warrior, genuine brick.
in the final moments lupus ascended to full illithid, we freed orpheus, killed the renegade emperor, and lupus finished off the game with a smokepowder arrow to the brain's face. then he gallantly killed himself.
140 hour campaign across three countries: me in thailand, my mate in USA, and other mate in australia

I'm on my third playthrough as a necromancy wizard. But Helldivers 2 is taking most of my gaming time lately.

BG3 has huge potential as an engine, for really exciting and good multiplayer D&D gaming, if only it had a toolkit like NWN2 or something

I would love to mess around with that toolkit.

Re: I am ready to pass judgement on BG3, my short review
now i am slowly chipping away at a single-player campaign and trying to do everything differently to how i did it in the original multiplayer campaign
i am natnaykhine, halfling sorcerer, dragonborn, lightning affinity. traveling with astarion, gale and shadowheart. it was fun defending the druid grove. and assassinating the goblin leaders one by one. now i am in the shadowlands but won't be able to make much progress for another week or so.
