necroticism has more tracks that i like and there's also no filler

i love them both and believe they are both very important albums in death metal

I'm a MA fan boy obviously, but come on, Necrotism is better. It's not better than Covenant or Formulas, but isn't it better than Altars at least? I'm including production values, what actually sounds better at home, instead of how it sounds at a concert.

i think it's fair to say necroticism is a better-sounding album than abominations through blessed, and a great many other landmark death metal albums for that matter. but it's also fair to say there are countless albums that sound much better and have slicker productions than necroticism, but which in turn could never in a million years hold a candle to it. i don't think production is really ever a decisive factor for me in terms of my overall appraisal of whether i like one album over another.

Now imagine 'Necroticism...' with 'Heartwork's production. And 'Altars...' with 'Covenant's production. It's amazing the difference sound makes; I've always said my favourite MA album is a coin-toss between C and F, but if F had C's sound it would be no contest.

To be honest, I wasn’t that big on Carcass in the first place save for a few albums. I’m the type that loves Terrorizer’s World Downfall album more than any Carcass album.

I never cared too much for Blessed. it has its good songs, but I rank it lower than D, F, G. So, this goes to Necroticism.

Yeah, pretty easy choice too. Rutan brought a lot to MA. Also helps that D and G absolutely slap in heaviness, production and vocals.

i much prefer vocals on B to D, of course G has some good vox but it's uneven as fuckitties

regarding heaviness ... there's a big difference in production between those three albums, and as we know bats production has its critics, but B is still heavy as fuck

i don't think you can really pin technical advancement on any one band, as it was happening in parallel across the whole genre. certainly considered dead was very technically accomplished for 1991; but so was BATS, effigy, unquestionable presence, etc etc.. and more importantly just beyond the mechanical developments, those bands were continuing to develop their own unique sounds and actually putting out good music! so there were a lot of death metal bands who played a lot of technically-complex material, but that technicality was always a means to a grander end.

i've always considered tech-death a later development in the late gloryhole era /early 2000s that just kinda plucked that one aspect of the genre that developed throughout the early-middle decade and ran with it. and that wave was IMO mostly about athleticism, which is fine, but not very interesting or enduring for me.

I mean technically speaking Athiest…1990 were probably the start though I suppose one could argue they were “prog” or progressive death metal.

But otherwise I agree with stormy - Necrophagist - Onset was 1999 and after that you started to see a tons of bands playing technical death metal

and you can go back even further than 1990, since a good chunk of piece of time predated its release, having appeared on older demos. and ditto for their contemporaries like gorguts, suffocation, MA, etc., who all recycled older material into their earlier full-length releases (and of course, MA in particular mined that vein for longer than most, though the later examples were pretty markedly distinct from the rest of the material they appeared alongside). it really was an iterative process that kinda blows apart the idea of a single eureka moment where any one style or approach came into being, or that a single band pioneered it.
