just an absolute masterwork. jesus man this album is a towering achievement, i haven't listened to it in years but no matter how much time passes, i am continually blown away by it. how do you even categorize something like this? it was not created by men, rather by genius aliens briefly possessing human shells, to spread their unknowable language to the undeserving masses

Maybe I'll listen to it tonight since I probably haven't heard it in a few years.

I could be confusing this with something else, but I'm pretty sure they had the entire album ready to be recorded several years before they were able to. Pretty impressive that it still managed to be ahead of its time. Come to think of it the same can be said for Atheist's debut. I'm not sure what the holdup was in either case.

I remember buying an obscura shirt on eBay like 15 years ago and paid an absurd amount like $100. It was an original album art shirt from release. Used to wear it to all the local metal shows and got mad props all the time from folks in the know

I should give it another spin this weekend.

obscura was deeply indebted to the contributions of steeve hurdle, who afaik joined shortly after erosion which came out in '93 and left shortly after it released. it was definitely a long gap between the two, but i'm honestly clueless on the logistics of the recording.

that said, 22 years later it's still ahead of its time. there have been plenty of bands and albums that have come along since that were in turn deeply indebted to it, but still nothing else that sounds remotely like it.

BIG STEVE doesn't get the recognition he deserves. i think steve was an integral part of obscura being as bizarre as it was. negativa was just as weird.

there are some really absurd parts of obscura that make me laugh, mostly how the last track keeps going and going and going, they had to be laughing about that.

yeah, there's no question in my mind, obscura wouldn't have happened without steeve. the fact that it stands alone in their discography is proof enough; it was definitively a gorguts album, but they've never since replicated it. he was from another world, i don't think there will ever be another guitarist like him in our lifetime, a true one-of-a-kind

the outro of sweet silence is fucking wonderful, those deep dips just keep doubling in duration an absolutely amazing alliteration, it's scarcely over a minute long but it feels like an eternity
