i'm pretty sure almost every one of trey's solos are chaotic, as they have a tendency to have nothing to do with the song.

Ok you've just crossed the threshold of fail of no return. Kindly fucking kill yourself, you completely incompetent waste of flesh, that your remains may be put to more worthy use, such as feeding worms and bacterium.

I find that most people who like music that "stays inside the lines" so to speak, find abstract expression having nothing to do with anything. This is fundamentally wrong. By virtue of being alive, being a thriving creative being, anything you do always has something to do with the rest of yourself. This includes writing music, solos, etc. It's just that some, like to express their connections in more "colorful" ways. That's how I see Trey's solos, a palette of alternate colors in expressing a very connected musical passage(s). If the listener too thinks out side these lines or restraints, you have a wider perspective of those kinds of expression and also will realize Trey's solos have everything to do with the song.

well, it was supposed to be dry humor. clearly, it was taken the wrong way. trey's solos are awesome. but, they are chaotic...and sometimes his solos go off into tangents that go so far off key, that i'm afraid for the universe. but they are fucking awesome, clearly. that was the joke...seriously, have you ever heard the blues lick that he busts out in summoning redemption. it's like...the blues lick is played bluesfully well, according the the blues genre...but he plays it in a different key than the normal blues man would...and he plays it above swamping death metal...it is fucking chaotic. that's the joke i was going for.

Yes that's great stuff  ...and I feel ya man, it's humorous in a "damn that is some warped shit but beautiful and chaotic" way...

I remember the first time I heard this kind of thing. You guys remember "Shortest Straw" off of AJFA? The last solo Kirk plays (when kirk used to make interesting solos) is pretty evil. He's playing some kind of F# pentatonic or blues on top of the main riff and it's so beautifully dissonant! Ah the good ole days :tear:

I don't find any of their songs especially chaotic. They are all well structured and easy to follow.
I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.

Exactly right. Back when Kirk had something interesting to say musically, he was actually cool as fuck. Obviously not swimming with technical proficiency or anything, but hell, listen to the solo for The Thing That Should Not Be. It just sounds so fucking far out there, but it fits the song perfectly, and it's not obviously drawn from any of the previous riffs or anything.

Kirk had really awesome solos back in the day, but it's slowly become the same blues-wah wah crap over and over again.

In fact, here's the one I was just talking about. Incredible live version. I always thought this song sounded a lot like Morbid Angel. Apparently, the Great Old Ones inspire musicians in similar ways. :xx:
