i wonder how much drug use happened in the band throughout their career and were they all in on it. i also wonder if rutan or tucker were ever involved. i remember reading somewhere that tucker said "trey refuses to live in reality", which might have suggested trey was using (thought i don't think this was a mystery).

I feel the same as you do. Let's say they parted ways with the band for a reason. Tucker seems pretty much a down-to-earth hard-on bearer to me (Based on what I've talked with him over these years), Erik seems to be the same.
