also, since you run multicolor, is there any particular reason for llanowar over birds of paradise? do you use them as dual purpose 1/1 killing fodder/mana ramp?

Mostly at the time I didn't have the extra blings for birds. I use the elves strictly as meat shield and ramp. Between the elves and dark rituals I'm actually really happy with how it runs. Ive actually won a game or two with the opponent having over 20 life thanks to invigorate

after getting completely ruined for the five millionth night in a row i think i'm ready to scrap the mill and go back to my black deck, that shit just does not win any of my current matchups outside of fluke miracle draws vs. overwhelmingly shitty opposing draws. i'm hoping my infect stuff arrives tomorrow so i can actually give it a test run this week, but it doesn't look likely

with the ensnaring bridges i actually had a chance against my fellating lover's green deck, but then he decided to load up on great stable stags. between those and four reclamation sages to deal with the bridges/mementos/pithing needles, as soon as one of those is on the board, the game is literally unwinnable

Groundswell is pretty fantastic. You should think about throwing some invigorates in since they end up being free to cast for a +4/+4 bump.

one of the students in my first tuesday / thursday classes was organizing a deck of magic cards for most of the period yesterday

years ago, this would have enraged me and i would not have let it persist after my entrance to the classroom

however, as he is one of the five total students who regularly (if barely) contributes to what passes for discussion, and as it didn't seem to affect his participation, i let him continue

and thus ends my contribution to the magic card thread

i am very strict about running 60. my friends tend to go over pretty frequently though. i generally stick to 23-24 on lands, i'm a bit thin on mana for this deck because of the super low casting requirements + ramp creatures. that can be adjusted easily enough if necessary

I was doing some reading and kept seeing peoples decks getting ripped for not running the standard 24 lands. In a 60 card deck 24 lands is hefty as fuck. Plus all the ramp cards people use its almost overkill. Running 20 with a few ramp cards just seems to make more sense overall.

Clever impersonator could prove to be pretty useful. Utter end is alright but there's probably way better options. And reassembling skeleton definitely beats the shit out of bloodsoaked champion unless its a raid deck.

yeah, the impersonator is probably my favorite pull. don't know what i'll do with it, but it's definitely worth hanging on to. the fetches + foil empty paid for the box, and i'll probably trade the latter in for something more useful. will probably get rid of utter end as well, i don't know why it's pricing as high as it is because it's hugely inefficient and given the color spread, it's not like either one are exactly hurting for vastly-more-efficient removal options.

ok so i just made a deeply confusing find. i uncovered an onslaught starter deck, and a pile of cards from revised/visions/mirage/judgment/weatherlight. the revised/visions/mirage stuff makes sense because i played during that period, but i have no clue where the fuck i would've come into possession of anything from the onslaught block.

anyway, i found a near mint cabal therapy and demonic tutor in the pile so i pretty much just found $30 in a drawer

i will admit that i started freaking out when i saw the onslaught deck, thinking 'holy crap mint condition original printing fetches!' but the only thing of note in the box was a riptide laboratory. oh well!

not surprising though, given how expensive efficient hand disruption tends to get. i could see therapy being very strong in a black control setup, especially if you have something like duress or thoughtseize to set it up. toss in an extraction afterward to completely ruin combo decks.

whether or not it's even viable in vintage/legacy is another question, i guess. but i can definitely have some fun with it, so i will probably hang on to it and work it into another build.

sadly the tutor is redundant since i wound up buying one over the summer

i don't know if i should just trade it, be a dick and sneak an extra into my mill deck, or what.

The price spikes in cards seem completely tied to edh. That shit is just basically 100 different cards thrown together and called a deck. The premium seems to be on removal type cards and lands. Take fulminator mage from shadowmoor for instance. Back when it came out it probably saw limited use even in block. But that fucker goes for over $40 now and all it does it destroy a non basic land.

Can't say I have that problem. If you can get it to work its pretty awesome for getting some playtesting done. Just know if you play against a preloaded deck its full of power 9 cards.

i found another program called cockatrice that seems to be more or less the same, but i find the deckbuilding portion to be much, much easier to work with. you can do netplay with it too. from what i can tell the client doesn't have any functional game logic, it just provides you with all of the necessary components to run a game, but everything has to be input/controlled manually. which is a bit clunky, but i guess if you got good with the keyboard shortcuts and whatnot, it could be fairly usable

i almost stopped in to the local shop today to grab a couple deltas but i resisted the urge. i need a new turntable, gonna save some blingos for that before i go spending more on magic. my infect is in very nice shape, and i've got enough stuff banked from packs to build a functional goblin deck which i'm currently working on. currently nowhere near optimal, but i've got a few rabblemasters i pulled from my box split over the summer, and enough other stuff where i can comfortably build around those.

edit also holy FUCK at the current rabblemaster prices. them shits were like a dollar when the set came out, i wish i had thought to complete the playset when i had the chance

Deltas were going for $30 at the shop and the zendikar fetches are way up there too. I actually mentioned how ridiculous the prices are getting on some cards. The sexy leopard elevator working there tried to justify it by telling me how awesome edh is. Her jaw about hit the floor when I said its the worst thing to happen to magic with foils being a very close 2nd

i'm surprised deltas are selling that high, tcgplayer has them sub-$20 now and they'll probably continue to dip further as more and more packs get opened. zendikars won't be going down anytime soon though, not until they get a reprint too. which i seriously doubt will happen during the current block.

foils, i'm indifferent to. if i get lucky on a rare foil, it's a nice extra as i can just trade it for something actually useful, or 2-3-4 copies of the same card.

i still don't think i understand EDH fully. is it just, you stat with a legendary creature in play, it's color restricted based on your opening creature, and you have more life? that was my understanding and it seems pretty dumb.

Generally cheaper online sure but a brick and mortar always add a few bucks on. Zendikar probably won't see any major reprints for another block or two.

The deck has to be 100 cards exactly. Every deck needs a commander which is just the legend you build the thing around. The only duplicate you can have in a deck is basic lands. There's some nonsense about a command zone where all the commanders go and can be cast from there. Every time its cast from there added colorless to the cost. If the commander is sent to the graveyard or exiled it just goes back in the zone. I know there's a set amount of damage you can take from a legend before you lose the game. Plus you start with like 50 life or some bullshit.

magic is fascinating and fun and enjoyable to discuss, even if it is in a forum thread principally between two people. others have contributed, and they can't do that if the discussion is restricted to PM's. text isn't good for carrying on detailed discussions so it is not useful for discussing a topic like this. imagine trying to cram a full decklist and sideboard into 160 characters! even a mono deck with nothing but a fat block of basics and full playsets would take a number of messages to send

basically you're wrong and there's a lot of reasons for that
