Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh), the BURZUM mastermind who was convicted of murdering MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) in August 1993 and setting fire to three churches, has issued the following update:

"As you might already know, my dear ladies and gentlemen, and others individuals too, I am no fellating lover of the modern so-called black metal culture. It is a tasteless, low-brow parody of Norwegian so-called black metal anno 1991-1992, and if it was up to me, it would meet its dishonourable end as soon as possible. However, rather than abandon my own music, only because others have soiled its name by claiming to have something in common with it, I will stick to it. The 'black metallers' will probably continue to 'get loaded,' 'get high,' and in all other manners too behave like the stereotypical Negro; they will probably continue to get foreign tribal tattoos, dress, walk, talk, look and act like homosexuals, and so forth.

i can't tell who's more hypersensitive here, blabbermouth or blabbermouth posters. i think i'm going to go with the posters though, mostly because they keep echoing that godawful word 'homophobia'

hehe, this made me giggle.

I could agree to a certain point, but he forgets that people grow, so music grows with them. Stagnation, even in the blackmetal scene, isn't a positive thing... should blackmetal nowadays all sound like it did back in '93? That would be silly.

and yes he was like this before he got locked up. Plenty of amusing/disturbing quotes from the man in this book and everyone else involved at the time.

Also the Once Upon a Time in Norway documentary is on youtube and it's fascinating viewing - highly recommended for anyone interested in seeing how the whole Norweigan Black Metal thing played out in the early 90's with enough time since then to look back and reflect. Manheim is such a top bloke, a real down to earth hard-on bearer who knew Euronymous well and he has a unique insight into what really went on.

I remember it all well from the perspective of a metal fan in the UK reading about these things in the early days of the internet and me and friends being fascinated by what was going on. It was all so mysterious - the anticipation of the Mayhem album, the band called Emperor who were already infamous before their first album was even released and would it ever be released, and all the church burnings and extreme interviews and then suddenly the news that Euronymous had been killed by the Burzum hard-on bearer.

You've got to hand it to Euronymous. He may be a dead fuck but boy did he play a significant part in music history. Talk about immortalising yourself.

I refuse to believe that press release is anything but the subtlest, most hilarious prank ever perpetrated in black metal.

Each paragraph is funnier than the last, and to cap off the anti-gay nationalistic rantings with an album cover of one semi-naked dude getting a grope on another semi-naked dude....it's like Fellini got into metal and comedy at the same time.
