Hey Noyka

Post by zim »

What are your thoughts on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) if any? Next week I think I'll probably be going for some type of ADHD assessment test.

My thoughts on it: It's a very common diagnosis but most of the time those diagnosed with it have some other issue or are perfectly fine. I was originally diagnosed with it and took ritilan to treat my attention issues for many years. I wouldn't worry too much about the diagnosis but if they prescribe you ritalin be careful, it's very addictive.

I've had a bad experience with adderol (another commonly given drug like Ritalin). It actually made me hear voices and see things, I called them ghosts and thought there was this whole ghost world around me. Keep in mind I was nine years old at the time.

Maybe there exists an extreme case where meds would be justified. Maybe.

But it is massively massively over-"diagnosed".

Diagnosing someone as having "ADHD" does not explain anything. It is not in any way an exlpanation of why they have whatever symptoms they have. Some child psychiatrists even seem to not gasp this.

Deciding to call it a syndrome possibly does more harm than good. Possibly. But no one seems to fucking consider that.

People starting little kids on meds with not enough evidence that they're doing more harm than good.

I think it's fucking disgusting.

And the diagnostic criteria are so fucking vague as to make the whole thing a farce.

I agree with you 100%

Don't get me started on all the meds and the side effects I endured as a child/young teen.

The best thing to do is try to deal with the symptoms with not medicine, learn to over come them on your own.

the side effects are often worse than the actual symptoms. I took one medication (not for ADHD) that caused my muscles to tense up and I slept 20 hours a day. This was actually a life threatening neurological condition that if I had taken the medication (abilifi) any longer could have been permanent.

Noyka, I've been trying forever. I've suffered severely in school, at home, with relationships. I can't finish anything I start, no matter how hard I try, write myself notes, it's like the harder I try the harder it becomes to focus. Can't read books, finish projects, ect. I'm sure you know how the rest goes.

The worst part is that my parents just think I have a "I don't want too" type of attitude. They never thought of it as a problem, I told my mom that I thought I had pretty severe adhd and all she said was the I didn't have it. Can't say my parents were the most supportive growing up and that's why it's such a problem today.

Did medication help you at all with the problem?

Zim, that sucks.

I think you'd be best served finding a good GP and talking thing through with them. See what they think.

Please don't make a call based on people's anecdotal stories of what helped them.

I recently found a place in town that performs the testing, although I think they might just give me a test and throw meds at me. I'd really like to talk it out with a doctor. Have to wait until Monday to call them.

Do that!

Don't just go to some place to be "tested". That actually sounds like it can only be run by idiots.

Yeah check them out (the doctor not testing center), ritalin helped me but like Johnny said people's stories shouldn't really matter to you. Everybody metabolizes medications differently. Don't let them talk you into anything you're not comfortable with though. Medication does work (Ritalin worked for me and lots of people I know)

Funny how one little phrase completely throws off what you were trying to say :redneck:
