Those of you here who are growing "old" in college/uni...

Post by shadowalk »

(Yes I just dunked a few cold ones on my own and one of those life-reflecting moments just hit me)...how do you guys cope with it? Does it kinda bother you when virtually everyone else around you is younger than you are. I know I am and sometimes it kinda feels boring. :oldryan:

I'm 23, currently taking up multimedia arts...and yeah I've been really delayed and all. More and more of my batch mates in high school are either getting their own jobs or are starting to have kids of their own. Based on my classmates and the subjects that I'm still going through, I'm still technically in the middle of second year college and it's kinda getting ehhh for me. :oldryan: ...especially when almost everyone around you is into stuff that you would normally dismiss as 'something kids are into these days' (e.g. emo "music", all-decked out 'rebel' clothing, parties, drugs, radically concerned about getting laid and the like).

i'm about to go back to college and i'll be in the same boat. its okay though, i had those days but i'm glad they're over. time to mature a bit. there must be some like-minded people at your school.

I know a few older folk at my college in the age range of 25-30 and I wouldn't be surprised if they're having the same thoughts as I am. I can't even get a decent social life at that college due to several mitigating factors brought upon by being older and that most of the people are into very different stuff. My college life is basically go to class and once that's finished, head straight out to the parking lot, maybe have a cigarette or two, then step into my car right away and drive home.

that sucks, being lonely is no good. maybe you should force some people to become friends with you. be like, "hi random person, i have no social life, so we should hang out. i'm not hitting on you." " :mmno: "

It's not that I'm 'lonely' :redneck: but it's more like that I feel that the social animal in me has died after my heydey all-out days in high school and that I see no place for it in my college. The people I regularly hang out with are still my high school friends that I've known for years and we're a tight bunch and I wouldn't have it any other way. Then again, I've always been the loner-silent type all my life and I'd only belch out with the people that I'm comfortable with and it's obviously a factor.

When you're 23 and your everyday companions are loud 17-20 year olds, the whole growing up thing gives you a nice roundhouse kick in the face that's definitely gonna leave a scar.

I'm in a relatively similar situation myself. I'm 22 and I'm a bit behind on schedule for graduating. My social situation is actually the opposite, I attend a distance-learning university where the vast majority of students are older than me(generally studying as a hobby or to ascend professionally at their jobs, etc.). The few people I have met my age don't go to lectures(which are on a weekly or monthly basis), so I'm basically 100% on my own. There are a lot of young people actually, but 99% are studying psychology, not sciences, so there's 0 chance of sharing common courses with anyone. :redneck: I've got my professors all to myself.

I haven't heard from my high school colleagues in years but afaik almost none ended up graduating college, some even didn't graduate high school, most were pretty childish.

I do encounter people my age and younger at my gym and stuff but I share absolutely nothing in common with people my age either(parties, drinking, etc).

You'd do best to shag any barely legal girls at your university before they wise up. :santa:

I haven't started going to school yet, but I think I should start next year. I really want to be a full time musician but I think it would be very wise to go to college first. That way I'll be able to find a job that I would enjoy if music couldn't be my career.

I'm 30 and I'm not the oldest student in my college. There are people who just finished high school, 19-20 years old, but there are also people who are >40. I have classes at weekends, most of the students are working full time, or it's their second course - they study something else on weekdays.

I don't think it matters what age you are if you're in college. The fact that your even there is a step above everyone who isn't, improving and educating yourself is never a bad thing no matter what age you are.
