clean vocals in any type of death metal song.



i was browsing around youtube looking for some tunes, came across this (video below) and thought it was an alright song. until it hit about 2:25. seriously, wtf? i mean it wasn't like nails on a chalk board but it destroys the atmosphere of the song for me.

That's a huge turnoff, definitely. I don't want to say never, because there a few songs where they work (see Nile: Defiling the Gates of Ishtar...but that's more of a chant, really). 99.9% of the time though, I find myself wanting to throw something.

another thing i hate is chants. not chanting like black seeds of vengeance or something similar to that. mostly things you hear in dethcore. i know it's not a popular genre around here but I enjoy the occasional handful of songs.

i was really digging this until 2:50. that completely destroyed the song.

Oh man, I really hate deathcore. The kind of chant I meant was the eastern monk/priest chant sounding part in the song I mentioned. It's clean singing, technically, but it really intensifies everything else around it. Definitely not that generic "small white-hard-on bearer pop-punk" singing that sometimes finds its way into death metal.

For sure, man. I love that deeper ended stuff. That's my natural vocal range, so that seems to be what I gel with in music. Never was much of a fan of tenors, or the whole crew of guys trying to be Rob Halford. We were actually discussing something on nilechat that's sort of related to this.



I'm not usually much for choral music, but within Russia, there is a specific style known as basso profundo. Basically, it's below-bass singing. Their voices are fucking god-like...they sound like pipe organs. Definitely rings that "God of Emptiness" bell for me. Give it a whirl:

That first one was amazing, second one was cool but the first had a real dark feeling.

a couple of weeks ago I went to a metal gig and there was a local death metal band opening.



they were alright, the crowd was into them..and then the singer busted out with some clean vocals, and they were terrible to boot.



at least 3/4 of the crowd went outside after that.

Yeah, me too. In fact, the only reason I ever got into Type O Negative was the part in Christian Woman. Looking back, it's basically a direct copy of the basso profundo style. Duder had him a voicebox, he did. Never hit those notes live though, as far as I know.

back when I listened to core, I always though "this would be better without those shitty breakdowns". Then I discovered real metal.

out of a need to be 'unique'/'interesting'/etc., without respect to whether nor not it's appropriate for the song. because shoehorning random elements in that sound 'unique' or 'interesting' or what have you, is more important than writing quality music when you're an image-conscious douchebag with nothing interesting to say
