i think i read somewhere that he used an old hotrodded fender bassman for one of their albums. i cranked one once and it didn't take much volume for nice creamy tube saturation a lot like the sound here.

i think it was at a music store. the sucker was on the "overdrive" channel. with old tube amps the overdrive channel starts with a crystal clear clean tone at 1/2 volume, and is already a bit saturated at 2. god bless vintage instruments.
