I've had one for three years, still going strong. It's been getting kind of creaky lately, and I'm worried it might die soon

I got one of the 80gig ones either 3 or 4 years ago. It died recently.
Since I got it, I fucking hated everthing about iTunes and the iPod. It's like the were designed for morons by morons.
Made my day when I first found that video.

Re: iPods.
I had an 80 gig iPod video and it died so much that best buy finally gave us $200 store credit to buy a new iPod so I got the 120 gig iPod that I now use. I stuck with it because I have a warranty and can replace it if the hardrive goes bad like it did with my video. Apparently the iPod videos were faulty. Once this one goes bad and the warranty expires I'm getting another brand of MP3 player.

My college like most colleges use scrapple software and man it sucks. We have this program called Lab Chart reader that we're supposed to download for reading our physiology data at home and they didn't giv e us the right instructions for reading on a PC. The lab due date had to be pushed back a week because of the mass amount of technical difficulties my class was having (minus those who had macs).

Re: iPods.
I have a 30gb photo ipod that I've had for almost 4 years, and was already at least a year old when I bought it used(like, back when these things came with AC adapters for free). I've had to replace the battery 3 times(for less than 4$ a pop if you DIY), but no biggie. It's been ropped many times, with and without the rubber skin I have for it. I haven't seen an mp3 player with a better menu system, so I really cannot complain.
I never ever used iTunes, I downloaded anapod manager the day I got it and almost immediately afterwards started using Winamp to manage it(best way IMO).
I'm actually hoping it'll die within the next year or 2 so I can justify buying a smaller solid-state mp3 player, kinda tired of this bulky old thing.

I've had just about every ipod but I'm not a fan, they're cool but there is just something about them I don't like.
My favorite is this Sansa 4GB, I put rockbox software on it and this thing is awesome.

most old school hardware wins in this area.
my ghetto blaster from the late 70s is still kicking!! great sound!
i didn't buy an iPod after doing net research.
Ended up getting a discman, that was mp3 capability. it is good and was only $89.
but if i do get something in the future it will be same as Zim with rockbox or a Sony one (the leaders in portable audio since it's existence)

unfortunately, as of now, the best Sansa players (fuze and clip and clip+) have only rockbox in a beta version
but
on the Sony. it lacks support for lossless formats and gapless playback, but the SQ more than makes up for it

but i doubt it would have been much more popular. it is still moderately popular among audiophiles and some bands still use these for recording, but the tech. was dead before the advent of the mp3s: lack of serious support from other manufacturers and records companies, little to no advertising (i do not know what was the situation when those things were new, but by the time i bought one, '98/99, hardly anyone even knew about them), no easy way to transfer music until the NET models (and even that was sucked because of SonicStage), SQ wasn't really anything to write home about unless you had one of the high-end models (that cost an arm and a leg to this day) and used the highest bitrate ATRAC (and that leads to low capacity), ATRAC sucked until version 2 (that came out when the mp3s had already taken over)...

it already does, you have to buy an attatchment.
ive had an ipod for a few years now and i love it, ive only had one problem with it and it was because my drummer hit me in the leg with a wet floor cone and it cracked my ipod, but i sent it in and they gave me a new one.

My 2GB nano is still going strong after a few years and much abuse. I've had no problems. iTunes can be a shit but I have not be convinced to leave it for anything else, and I've tried just about everything else. The closest thing that nearly pulled me away was the Zune media library software. Deal killer: cpu temps were 10c higher running Zune than iTunes. I do not know what about it did that.
If my nano ever dies, I've been eyeballing the latest Zune line. It's a bit of a redemption for a player that was initially lauded as a total shit.

itunes/ipod most definitely support mp3. it wouldn't be the dominant player by such a gigantic margin if it didn't, haha.

Re: iPods.
The only problem I have with itunes is the fact it's so huge. I have 2 gigs of RAM and 20 gigs of memory so a program that uses a lot of processing power (I think that's the word, I'm a computer nub) like itunes or any sort of game always slows my lap top to a crawl eventually freezing it if I try to run anything else.

Re: iPods.
afaik, Archos has quite a few hd-based devices with said (or more) amount of storage space
also, you can mod pretty much every hd-based player with either high-capacity hard drives (for example, i've seen 240gb on an ipod classic) or CF cards (up to 64gbs, but it speeds things up, and you don't have to worry about moving parts)
