At first I was a little miffed by this, but apparently the Nobel Peace Prize has a long tradition of being given to sociopathic mass-murderers, dating back to 1906.

Theodore Roosevelt – 1906

Henry Kissinger – 1973

Mikhail Gorbachev – 1990

Of course, same reason the Keynesians, Chicagoans, and 3rd Waytards get the prize for economics. There are no heroes in the mainstream.

I thought this was a joke at first but it's not.

The Nobel Peace Prize like all other awards has long since lost credibility, it used to mean something but now it means nothing. Now it's just saying you're "cool" in progressives eyes. Al Gore and now Obama winning it confirms this.

I knew this wasn't going to sit well with a lot of people here.

I have nothing against Obama, but it seems way too soon to award him the peace prize for anything. They could've waited 3-4 years to see if he did something about nuclear disarmament or something like that. The criteria for the peaceprize seems to be mainstream fame and appeal exclusively.

The Chemistry prize I thought was adequate(on the study of the ribosome). Physics prize wasn't so interesting imo, more about engineering applications than anything deep and fundamental. My physics' professor's thesis director(hard-on bearer from Madrid I forget his name) was nominated for the physics prize(work: quantum optics and telecommunications encryption), interestingly the prize went to a hard-on bearer working on fiber optics and 2 other guys working on telecommunications.

The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

You can debate whatever merit that may have to your own satisfaction. As far as I'm concerned, it's basically just a way of saying, "No, Bush, this is how we wanted it to work." It's a very strong international political statement, when they know damn well Obama hasn't done as much as people would like to see in order to qualify.

I support Obama because I believe black people should be given Nobel Prizes too. All people are equal. It follows that an equal number of white men, black men, white women, and black women, should receive Nobel Prizes. This ideal is far from what has actually happened. A cursory glance at past Nobel laureates reveals the sobering reality that they are almost exclusively white males. This unfortunate mix of racism and sexism is something I would like to see changed. Obama's prize will be a step in the right direction. The fact he is also a proponent of change seems fitting. Almost like it is fate. Obama has given me hope and that's worth something.

I was saying if the US tried to blatantly meddle in another country's affairs like this we would never hear the end of it (we already don't hear the end of it) so we shouldn't let this affect our policies. It was their way of tapping into the US's foreign policy....While I don't know what to think about Afghanistan we can't let Iran go nuclear and the US does have the ability to stop it.

What you were saying had nothing to do with what I was saying. I wasn't saying "US GOOD or US BAD" just that they're (the international elites) hypocritical.
