Did you enjoy MA the first time you heard them?

Post by Paste Human »

For me the answer is not really.

The first time I heard Morbid Angel was Altar's at a fellating lover's house, and I wasn't very impressed by it for some reason. Then probably a few months later I heard Covenant at that same fellating lover's house. I didn't exactly enjoy it, but I was intrigued by how unusual the soloing sounded, and I was impressed by the drumming. I kept that in the back of my mind until I eventually traded another CD for C, and now it's one of my favorites of all time :santa:

The moment i heard Thy kingdom come and abominations, i was hooked.

After that, when altars was released in '89 it became almost an obsession.

Formulas for me. Blown away the first listen. I just kept on jamming Heaving Earth before going to the next track since it was such a big switch musically.

The first song I heard was Where the Slime Live. I'd never heard anything like it before, I had trouble processing what was going on.

But I kept coming back and absolutely loved it.

I got a tape with a good recording of Blessed are the sick and From beyond. The ancient ones was my step-in song and it just kept on growing on me. I still love BATS to bits!

I kept jamming "Nothing Is Not" when I first played FFF. It was quite a different vibe for MA I felt. the tempo shifts and ending are just so fucking heavy & :xx: :xx: :xx: :xx: :xx: :xx:

I also jammed "Covenant of Death" & "Invocation To A Continual One" for those awesome solos

The sexy leopard elevator who took my virginity commanded me to go out and buy Covenant. It blew me away. I was instantly obsessed and spent hours listening to it, pouring over every nuance.

FUCK YES. And the best part is that not a single note of that album has lost one iota of potency.

Sworn To The Black also hit me hard early on.

I originally had a really hard time getting into God of Emptiness and usually skipped that track for the first couple years I had the album. Then when I saw them live for the first time and they played the song it suddenly clicked, especially during the solo with that massive bass sound in the background. That part of the song is now one of my favorite little slices of Morbid Angel :xx:

I also jammed "Covenant of Death" & "Invocation To A Continual One" for those awesome solos

A fellating lover of mine was listening to that album at full blast with headphones on a long greyhound bus trip. He briefly took off the headphones during CoD and realized a lot of sound was leaking out, and when he looked to his left and right he noticed that several people were staring at him with a horrified look in their eyes :redneck:

The first time I heard Morbid Angel, it was Blessed are the Sick in 1991, and I was instantly blown away !!!

I remember having read an interview of the band in a french magazine, probably from 1990, for the promotion of Altars of madness, but at that time I was into heavy-metal listening to Iron Maiden, Helloween, AC/DC, Alice Cooper etc. and didn't really pay attention to it.

But when I started listening to death-metal with bands like Death, Obituary, Sepultura (beneath/arise era), I read again this MA interview and it really became the forbidden fruit I absolutely had to know: the article approximately said that Morbid Angel was the most violent band in the world and was making Slayer sound like pop music !!! But where I lived in Switzerland it was quite hard to find that kind of stuff in stores, until one day, when a cousin said he had bought Blessed are the sick ! I was so excited to go to his house and listen to it, and when it was done I felt like rediscovering death-metal, I found it really evil, darker than all death-metal stuff I knew before...and after all these years, BATS remains my favourite MA album !

When I first heard Rapture I was trying to imagine what Trey's guitar looked like (of course I wasn't aware of Trey at the time) because it sounded like something was broken or very unique to his setup. The same thing happened around the same time when I heard Richard Christy's performance on the final Death album. :redneck:

I should correct myself a bit. Technically, the first time I heard Morbid Angel was on Beavis & Butthead.

I also may have to sneakily change mine. I seem to have always had this vague memory of either 1: Beavis and Butthead, or 2: A rock music documentary during the mid 90's exploring the heavier corners of the genre. I was only young (maybe 5 or 6) and of course it was God of Emptiness playing in the clip with the video. I watched it seeing evil meh on knees with the growled vocals and the really low guitars and thinking fuck this is so cool. It sort of made sense to me, I understood the aggression even back then, though I'd have no idea what the vocals were about, but the whole output of the sound being produced just seemed so magical to me. I think this subconsciously left a stain in my mind ever since even though I didn't actually start listening to metal until my teens. When I discovered Morbid Angel for real only about 5 years ago it was like a calling. Trey's riffs in Altars of Madness sounded like I'd heard them all before as a child. I like to imagine crazy shit like the riffs being produced from Trey's guitar during concerts in the 90's were subconsciously felt by children like myself around the world for whom it struck a cord with most :redneck:. Either that or the riffs were inspired by a lot of old video games which would explain why they resonated so well with me.

First song I heard was Thy Kingdom Come back in 92. I didn't understand it for weeks. The verse rhythms are so weird. I only really 'got' the solos a few years back. I thought it was the craziest shit I had heard, ever, and that song still stands as a landmark in terms of just reckless insanity. Bands might play faster and tighter these days, but no-one has matched that track for pure brain-leaking-out-the-ears madness.

The first album I heard was Altars when my studymate got it, also in 92. I could barely listen to the end. It disturbed me, to be honest. I couldn't comprehend how someone could make music so downright barbaric.

Hell yeah, the first time I heard Morbid Angel I found them amazing. I began with Covenant/Formulas/Blessed :xx: then the rest came along nicely.
