always had great luck with WD. my current 500GB has been in very nearly constant use since i bought it (~2 years ago), only exceptions being when i've had to lug it up/down the east coast. still runs like a goddamn champ

price-wise they're pretty hard to beat, especially if you only need a USB connection. newegg has the base model 1TB drive for $110, 2TB for $200.

I have a WD in my pc atm. After a couple months of getting this new pc it wouldn't boot up cause the HD wasn't being detected. I had to send it to the company and wait 2-3 weeks. :oldryan: Luckily they fixed it and none of my stuff was erased

I have a 250 gig Seagate the first one I got was faulty and the new one I have works awesome. This is the first external I've bought so other than my experience I don't know what to tell you.

Honestly, just buy an enclosure and an internal drive separately. It's cheaper, plus you can swap the bitches out if you want.

Eagle Consus M-Series $28.49

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB $84.99

If you ever want to kick up to 2TB or whatever as time goes on, just by the internal drive instead of a whole new unit.

I'm liking the stuff Western Digital is putting out these days. The Caviar line is great. "Green" skimps on performance a little in exchange for lower power usage (hence the name) but they are quieter and more reliable. "Black" is a mighty performance beast.

i've dealt with tigerdirect before, they're fine so long as there's no problems with your order. my experience with having to deal with returns thru them has been nothing but overwhelmingly bad, however.

newegg on the other hand, was ridiculously accomodating the one time i had to return something to them. i fucked up the order, i was setting up a wireless network and accidentally ordered one NIC and 2 AP's instead of the other way around, they gave me the return authorization right away and even picked up the shipping, had the correct part arrive in a few days.

fuck yeah newegg

thats pretty much what ive heard about both sites. fellating lover of mine bought a laptop from newegg couple months back. only to have it crap out on her a few weeks later and was able to return it without any issues.

The only problem i have with NewEgg is there return policy on monitors. According to them a monitor has to have a minimum of 8 dead pixels to be declared defective. So you could have 1-7 dead pixels and wouldn't be able to exchange/return your monitor.. I think. :frown: :ra: :oof:

That's pretty standard practice, not only through them, but also through manufacturers. Most dead pixels are actually just stuck pixels and can be fixed by gently, with a clean finger, massaging the spot (no lie). I had one stuck pixel on green on my LCD and that method worked like a charm.

I've heard of methods to fix pixels but never knew if any of them worked. And I read that damage pixels can be caused during shipping so I thought it would just be safer to go buy a screen from a store.

if you buy it from a store, it's still getting shipped around just as much as it would if you bought it from newegg. it has to go from manufacturing to probably multiple distrubutors before it gets into the store

I'm not aware of that, but it's a possibility. It's always been my understanding that it happens in manufacturing.
