Replacing drum heads

What kind should I install that would sound halfway decent on a shitty 5-piece kit that I acquired? Right now, there are some Evans 2-ply hydraulic heads all around but the kick head is duct-taped all to hell and the other side of the bass has a poorly cut 5-inch port hole in the center, both of which makes the bass drum sound like shit. Should I go with expensive Remo heads or something for durability or am I going to want to upgrade eventually and just replace with inexpensive heads bought from a music store?

Dunno for 'halfway decent', but I can recommend you some good stuff:

Remo's Powerstroke 3 for kick and snare, clear Emperors for batter tom heads, and Ambassador on resonant tom heads works great for metal, especially for recording. Ain't that cheap tho.



It's debatable if it's worth investing or not, depends on the kit. If you only want to fool around, then buy some cheap heads.

Agreed. If its for messing about, get more durable ones. Lighter for recording etc.
