Its a very general principle. Any vector is expressable as linear combination of smaller vectors. Any function can be expressed as a linear combo of cosines and sines, as they form an orthonormal basis set (just like your unit vectors i,j,k form a orthonormal basis set in R^3) for functions.



I wonder if there's any way I can load mp3's into an app like Labview and decompose guitar tracks, it would be really helpful in trying to figure out guitar parts. Really wish I knew how to program.

I am sure there is a way to have an mp3 file as an input, and use a frequency analyzer from Labview. I bet some nerd has done it already.
