r-type for sega master system was a prequel to super r-type 
this was a spinoff of gradius, every other level is a vertical scroller making it a bit unique, same powerup system as gradius as well, with an added weapon

didn't care much for lifeforce but the gradius series has always been a favorite. 3 is probably my top pick, 5 which came out a few years ago was pretty fuckin' awesome too, developed by the same folks that made ikaruga.
