Gibson '58 Flying V. I haven't bought anything gear related in a long time and I sold all my guitars except for my Charvel. I swore off of pointy metal shapes a long time ago but there's something about the gold hardware and wood that makes me go

Alas, I'll probably have to settle for an Epiphone copy with a white pickguard, as these are ridiculously expensive now.

What are y'all gassing for?

Not going with the Farrari haha. It is gonna be the color i initially wanted. Holding it in my hands and seeing the more extreme lines of the bevels the other option was better. It is gonna look quite stealthy with the hard angles.

Here is the drawing i made. Note that the neck and headstock are layed out flat. The neck and head have a angle on the real thing.

No. Though i had been thinking about it for a while. My first ever guitar was a red ironbird. It left me in a rather shitty way and to this day it bugs me.. But i am gonna go with the original color i had in mind. I just hope it works out like i have in my head.

i love those extreme bevels, especially on the long back-wing. That's awesome! The new color choice is also better imo.

Hey uni you've owned some Gibsons right? I hear there is a big difference between the necks on the '58-specification and '61-onward specs. Would you happen to know anything about that?

basicly 50's = BIG, 60's thinner. I love the explorer and V necks as they are a hybrid between the two.

The Epi neck is not comparable to a Gib neck, though it is comfy.

Check out Tokai for a cool 58V model.

How "BIG" are we talking here? I'm pretty used to the thick C profile on my charvel model 5fx, but I think I can handle more on an electric if the frets are smooth and solid.

Yeah I checked out their site but I thought their V clone (retro F48V) was pretty fugly imo (mainly due to the lack of covered pickups). The UK site says its all mahogany set neck, but I found 2 retailers that claim its bolt-on and basswood, and another says agathis body with maple set-neck, made in China. Wtf?

I hear the Japanese brand Edwards make comparably good Gibson clones, but they seem to be really expensive in Europe?

Damn right Charvels are awesome, but why a modern one? I think they're overpriced. Get a Japanese-made one from the 80s/90's 2nd hand, they're friggin amazing and cheap. i wouldn't know where to get a used one that isn't ebay, and i just kind of assumed they were expensive anyway, given their great reputation and all. plus i have no idea if there's an equivalent for that particular guitar or what it's called, i just really like the look

There are two set-neck versions. One (more expensive) mahogony one and one alder with maple (Chinese). Both decent guitars. And two pickup covers are cheap as fuck and easy to install...

The charvel 5 does not have a thick neck in my book. A real 50's neck is much thicker.

The white Carvel posted is a japanese PRO-MOD and it is killer. definately worth the money. Had one here for a while.

I thought that was one of the new US made models that sold for around 1.2k$, which came out a few years ago as a big "reissue" thing. They looked very similar but had Duncans and an OFR if I remember correctly. How much do those pro-mods sell for then?

I'm not sure what models from the 80's/90's best resembles that one in particular, but there's a huge variety of MIJ Charvels that pop up on ebay. Neckthru guitars with very solid tremolos and fretjobs for under 500$ = win, plenty of good bolt-ons too. I think it was the model 4 and up = MIJ. However some of the finishes are very 80's (if you mind that).

I paid about 330€(around 500$, 90$ of which was shipping) shipped from Cali for my Charvel and it was in top-notch shape.

Uni would you say the Tokai plays/feels better than an Epi? I'll have to try the epi in a store sometime, I know of two in my hometown that had Epi V's and Explorers.

I have the Charvel 5a which is pretty much the same guitar but without a neck pickup and it's the best guitar I've played too.

I'd like to get some more, but money is tight atm. There is a few decent ones on ebay popping up but quite expensive atm.

Definitely want a black 5FX, shame they seem rare.

the japanese promods list around 1100, so i'd expect to pay 7-800 new in a store.

i did some poking around ebay earlier, saw some great looking deals there although nothing quite comparable to that one. still, i'm a little ways off from being able to buy another guitar at this point, so i guess it's all kind of moot for the time being

Yep I have NEVER seen another 5FX for sale, ever. I must have been incredibly lucky 3-4 years ago when I found it. Here is some fap material:

For anyone that doesn't know: there's an old rehearsal vid of Morbid Angel circa 1990 where Trey is playing a black 5FX (slanted singlecoil in the neck).

I checked out the promods, 900$ for a brand new MIJ sounds pretty good, but personally I'd rather get a vintage used Charvel for a bit less. Uni you should post that pic of your white crackle Model 5 (or was it 6?).

It was a model 650XL. I sold it... I have a Soloist knock-off from a brand called Vester. Basicly those were beginner to mid-level players guitars. The one i have played and sounded better than the charvel.

Thomann sold those Pro-mods for 666,- euros. They are a bit more expensive now. Duncan or Dimarzio, OFR, strap-locks, SKB flightcase and SUPERB fretwork, great crowning, rolled in board edge as if you played it for 15 years already...

Also the Neck-thru model series are not really THE charvel IMHO as charvel was originally bolt-on guitars. The new Pro mod series follows the original Superstrat designs more.

About the V... Epiphone makes a lot of guitars in different factories. Most of them Chinese. The older Koreans are said to be better. (I agree on the basis of the guitars i've seen). So if i had to choose between a Chinese Epi or Tokai i would not care, i would listen. The Epi is not made of Korina excusively.. Ive seen plenty of them being up to 6 pieces of alder with a veneer on topand back stained in a natural Korina color.

A lot of the Epi V's ive seen, including my sevenstring 58V have one fault. The neck is not fitted straight into the body. As the guitar seems to be symmetrical you would expect the neck to stand straight up when the guitar is set in a stand. But it leans over to the left when you look at it. They have lined up the bridge correctly with the neck so it plays well but it is weird. You can see it clearly when you look at the V anchor where the strings go into the body. It is not in the middle of the guitar above the split of the two wings. It is slightly to the right. So far all the 58V i have held had this. Except for the 67-reisuue V's. So you might want to check that. The angle is minor and you won't see it while playing but it is weird.

When BC Rich got sold in the early era of the gloryhole Kerry King signed an endorsement with ESP these were his signature models. They were also avaliable in black. These guitars have quite a collectible value now. Like or dislike the cracle paint, they are very good guitars. And look way better in real life or when photographed better.

Kerry's old mock was just a plain red one.. He splattered it himself with some black paint to have it looking more badass. :failedmiserably:

Uni nailed it. B.C. Rich got sold to Class Axe and the quality went out along with the Rico family. I wouldn't give a shit if the guitar was crackle, black, whatever, those guitars are high class son.

hah yeah, that's the one i meant! i guess the crackle finishes don't really resemble that guitar much at all, but for some reason it made me think of it

i used to have a poster from an issue of guitar world with that and some les paul, can't remember if that was his or hanneman's though.

Hanneman used to play a les paul. He attached some chains to it. Kerry used to play a explorer. Then they started to use BC Rich. Jeff played Biches and the occasional ironbird. Kerry warlocks and that mock. Around the time of SoH Kerry started using the first Speed-V and even a superstrat (I have the program of the World sacrifice tour). Jeff bought that iconic Jackson which he wallpapered with all sorts of stickers. After that BC Rich got sold. They went to ESP and got those sig-models.

When Bernie Rico bought the company back, Kerry went back to them. Nowaday BC Rich is owned by Hanser. And the KFK line is well know i guess.

I may be going to the US this summer so maybe I'll get a chance to look at some 2nd hand stuff, maybe I'll get lucky and find a Tokai-lawsuit era Flying V from the 70's/80's, or a deal on a non-reissue-pricejacked Korina Gibby. Any idea what they can go for? I remember some site that kept up to date list of "market value" for people buying instruments/gear 2nd hand, but I have lost the link.

In a few months and once the financial resources permit it, I shall get myself a new amp. Something that will definitely be an improvement over my Zoom Fire 15 watt but not that expensive. I have been looking at some used Line 6 Spider amps at a local musician's classified ads website but I think I need to do more research.

Nothing spectacular, but it has what I want: fixed bridge, 5-way selector for single coil sounds, and a wood finish. I played the older model with the ugly bridge in a store years ago and I remember liking it, this one has an upgraded bridge. Nice range of sounds and slick neck.

I have that in Weathered Black finish and put EMGs in it. It pretty much has all you need. Fixed bridge, dual humbuckers and Mahogany body.

And no, it's a bolt on. Neck is Wizard II.

Hah the one I tried was also weathered black. The body isn't mahogany though, its basswood which you can tell right away from the weight and softness, but the finish is "mahogany oil". Little/no finish = more resonance.

There's two versions of said. The RG321 is basswood (stopped production since around 2005 I think) while the RG321MH (intended as the basswood RG321's replacement) is mahogany hence the 'MH' although it is common to just use the term 'RG321' to denote either guitar.

Look up on youtube for AMT Legend amps pedal series. They are basically a preamp in pedal form kinda stuff, just plug in FX return (power amp in) on your amp and go. IMO they tend to sound quite natural.
