if you're in the market for a fuzz, you can't go wrong with a NPN
they clean up well with the guitar volume, but still retain the overall volume when cleaned up

fuzz dislikers can just leave this thread, fuzz has been used in many more instances than you probably realize, and is a part of many classic kick ass tones
nothing wrong with amp distortion, but unless it's some seriously modified amp, it cannot produce the same sort of tones
besides, it's apples and oranges, like comparing ice cream to gravy
