And when you do play do you practice exercises and scales/technique/improvisation or work on songs or just mess around? If it's both then what's the ratio of good practicing to just noodling?
When I first picked up the guitar I didn't really have any direction and messed around aimlessly for a couple of years. After a while my playing kind of plateaued and only in the last few months did I start practicing seriously and daily and for the first time in years my playing is improving.
usually my routine is, warmup (usually play along to Dominate and summoning redemption because ones fast and the other is slow) warming up really makes a difference. so usually a song with easy rhythm and then one more challenging as well as the same for easy and hard leads.
if i wanna jam along to some songs then i will. really focus on improvising and writing riffs of my own as well.
work on sweeps and arpeggios. scales. alternate picking. legato. then after that do whatever I want.
generally between 3-5 hours of just chilling and playing. ive played up to 8 hours a day and to be honest you dont need to. even if its 30 min to an hour of concentrated picking,scales,and exercises. that much a day will definitely help.
for you i'd say if you want the discipline. make a week schedule. each day is something different. and its played seriously. that will definitely help
maybe 30-60 minutes a day lately. not playing much in this period since i got rid of my amplifier almost immediately after i bought it, plus i seriously need to get my guitar fixed.
About two hours a day when I'm not teaching, and maybe 30 minutes a day when I am. Rarely is there a day when my fingers aren't racing all over a long, hard piece of wood.
