working on a different kind of project. kind of doomy, kind of surfy, more about making a vibe heavy with clean instrumentation. i'm super into playing guitar right now. it feels good to do so after about 5 years of me not playing at all. i also play various synths and all the other junk on recordings, so it's really slow moving, but i'm having fun. my main band is getting ready to get something going too.

my band is starting to play shows out locally now. we got asked to do a show at a burgerville, of all places, and are getting paid, which is always nice. we have some demos out, but are focusing on being a live band for the first time in the 3 years we have been a band. i really don't know how it will be received, but i guess i will find out. the material we are doing is kind of unique sounding. i can't really describe it, but to try i would say think 1984 sst records sound along with bowie influenced chord charts and blast parts. we are called the gethen. i have fun in this band playing the drums because it's not what i normally do.

I finally feel like the demo is nearing completion. I just need to write a few drum lines, keyboard lines, and arrange the lyrics. Thank fuck the lyrics have been a group effort between the three of us with stringed instruments. I feel like I'm doing all the rest myself

I got tired of waiting for his other two songs and closed the door on the writing again. I have 7 tracks picked out from the big bunch that I'm doing all that other stuff to. I predict you'll have a demo within a week. Hold me to that. After that, I'll be transcribing sheet music for the keyboardist and shooting film of a lovely lady for the artwork.

For the people who are interested and those who PM'd me with interest.

We recorded a five track EP with Void engineering/mixing. The result is his graduation project.

The complete EP (with art etc.) will be presented in triplet for his exam.

We will take three of the songs and use those with toned down artwork on a promo for labels. When there is no interest we will get the complete EP out ourselves in some way or another.

Tom picked one of the songs, out of those which will appear on the promo, to be featured on the portfolio page of his site.

That sounds killer. Tons of great riffs and a great solo. I also really liked the dual vocal approach you had going on in some places. I hear a lot of influence from C and F era Morbid Angel as well as early Hate Eternal.

Btw, I just did a mix of a two song single for a black metal band (along with guitars and vox recording - drums, bass and synth were recorded elsewhere). They have released their first album under Infernus' (of Gorgoroth fame) label, and now gonna try to find another label for the 2nd album with this single. The band put out songs on youtube as well, so I guess it's cool if I post a link to one of the songs here:

Sounds great! Really like the atmosphere. The reverbs on the vocals, guitars and drums just work really well together. It has that mid 90's approach to it.

Yeah we had some problems with that updating the website, not sure why it does that.

Just delete your internet browser's history and cookies/cache, that should do the trick.

Hey Uni,

I finally got it to work. Sure enough it was a cache issue. I've been curious about your project for a while, so I had been checking out Void's page ever since you guys had mentioned the track was coming, that's why I'd cached a stale version.

I thought it was really good overall. I thought the production really achieved the goal of sounding raw and not overly polished but still keeping everything intelligible. I wish Fury and Flames had sounded more like this, as it's a shame when a guitar player puts a lot of work into writing intricate, well balanced parts and then they get blurred into the overall mix. The guitar parts were probably my favorite aspect of it. I liked that the riffs were often different in each channel, liked the way they traded off from side to side pretty often. Sounded cool over loudspeakers, and over headphones it sounded like I was in the middle of a giant riff battle. I also really liked the melodies that went back and forth, thought they were really effective. Sometimes when bands toss those types of parts in the upper registers in the middle of a fruital song, it immediately sucks the power out of the song and feels discontinuous. You guys did it in a way that felt really natural, like it was supposed to be there.

The drums sounded really good, well played, and I liked that the kicks sounded full but really cut through without masking out a lot of the other low frequency content. Honestly I thought the low end in general was really appropriate. Too many mixes nowadays are muddy as fuck because the mixer wants the shit to "thump" all the time. Come to think of it, I wish King of all Kings had sounded more like this, as well. I think that one was too thin sounding. You guys got it balanced really well.

Who played the solo, you, or someone else? I liked the lead sound. Vocals sounded cool as well, I'm glad you didn't go for the super low approach. I think it could have taken away from the impact of the riffs.

Really psyched to hear the rest of the music one day, and hopefully seeing you open for Morbid Angel and blow them the fuck_ off of the stage.

In starting this project we (the band) had a pretty clear idea as to how we wanted to sound. Luckily Void understood exactly what we ment without getting into elaborate discussions. His ideas about what he wanted to do gelled nicely with our initial ideas. He really is a fourth member of the band in that respect. It never was the intent to copy a production style. Though we all have our favorites which we feel are prime examples of what to us is Death Metal.

I think our drummer did an outstanding job considering he did this in between two tours with Melechesh. The intent was a (as much as possible) natural sounding raw production. The only things triggered are the kicks. And in those went a lot of Voids time trying to get them where they are now. He did an excellent job on the toms too.

Milan, our bassplayer, did a great job as well.. and i gave him hell. I tracked guitars first. In that proces we changed some parts because things worked better that way. When he came in he had to relearn quite some things. Those recording sessions were pretty intense.

When reading comments about the guitar tracks and vocals i am so glad people pick up on this. A lot of thought went into all those things. I purposely wanted my vocals to be on a middle level so i could go higher and lower. I do not like those really low monotonous vacuumcleaners.

Guitar wise you hear four rhythm tracks. Two left and two right. My explorer is on the right and a RG on the left. The explorer is a bit cleaner. We recorded as clean as possible. I used a RAT front-ended marshall and finding a balance that worked was pretty smooth. Hard as hell to get the sqeals out of it though. Every lead was recorded with a specific sound in mind. One of them is done with a sound i made with my POD-XT a kind of dreamy ambient sound with not that much presence. Void thickened that one with some mayor reverb and it sounds quite dreamy. All the Chaos leads are my Kahlerised US series ironbird Pinky (yes i bought it back

) a pretty long delay setting and a Badhorsie I. The lead in the song you've heard is my UV7 BK (nicked TIE-Bomber by our drummer) if i remember correctly. Void recorded a chaos lead in one of the other songs. Actually it is part of a chaos twin solo hahaha.

When the vocals came up Void came over and we had a vocal session at my house just so he could see where i was coming from. We went through all the songs with me mumbling along the tunes

. We figured out most of the double vocals. And did some improv in the studio. Purposely we did not double everything low and high. Sometimes there are multiple highs going on on other times there are two lower voices. We payed a lot of attention to the placing of the vocals in the mix. There is a lot of panning going on. As well as adding some nice easter eggs in the songs.

Again thanks for the nice comments. I'm very self conscious about my playing and evenmore so about my voice. I hope you like our other stuff too when it gets out there one way or another.

So is this a studio project only, or do you plan to gig with it? Would you be using a session guitarist? There's so much dual guitar inter-play that I'm curious. Then again Rutan pulls it off somehow.

Have you been doing vocals for long? How are you at doing them while you play? I'm just curious because after dropping our singer I ended up stepping up and taking over vocals + guitar in my band. It's still a challenge for me a year-plus later, and my riffs aren't as tech as yours are.

We are preparing for gigging. But for that we need to get a promo out. It depends on label interest how we are going to do that.

We used to have another guitarist in the band. He had a burnout playing guitar. His heart was just not into playing guitar anymore. After struggeling with a severe case of RSI for a couple of years which was really bad, and all the work it needs to play this music comfy he just did not like it anymore. After that we decided we were going to continue as a three piece. It'll take some work but i'll manage. Not all songs have those long dual parts going on all the time. I've been doing vocals for quite a while, still i find it pretty hard to play this stuff while singing. In the other songs there are some fills/lead parts under the vocals which are difficult but i'm getting there. Our bassplayer is gonna do vocals too, to back me up and pull off the layering. There are some pretty cool/sick vocals in the other songs too.

If you ever wondered how we recorded vocals, well here is how and where:

Eventually went with the Shure SM7 dynamic mic, I first tried out a Nuemann U47 (condenser), but it was a bit too jumpy (it really needed a compressor during recordings, but I wanted to keep any compression to a minimum for later in the mix). So this one worked perfectly!

I used an Amek/Neve 9098 EQ as the preamp. Fucking love those things.

Reeeally like that you were tracking it the old school way - big sections/whole song, unlike many bands today, which are not able to do more than 1-2 riffs/beats at the time, some even require 1-2 hits/notes at the time!

Btw Tom (and Uni) I suppose that this was drum tracking and Uni was playing scratch guitar along with the drummer, or something else?
