More Morbid Angel backwards stuff

Post by bob_here »

Back in the day when I used to practice MA songs for hours on end, I'd record it to a Tascam 4-track. Remember those things ??

Hearing the riffs over and over I wanted to listen backwards so I flipped the cassette and then started to hear similiarities in main riffs. I don't kow if this was intentional or not but it's pretty sick either way. MA's always been about the occult stuff; more than meets the eye and this is just another occult element to the vibe of MA.

Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVCerb1Oxvs

What's errie here is that the album in which contains the riff that sounds very similiar backwards is always a skipped album. In other words:

Altars > Covenant

Blessed > Domination

Covenant > Formulas

Another cool thing I noticed sometime after domination was that they seemed to have had a pattern to the appraoch of each record. This is what I mean:

Altars = assault, straight away attack

Blessed = surreal, sludgey, dream-like

Covenant = back to assault, attack

Domination = sludge ridden, groove, surreal

Formulas = assault, attack

Gateways = laidback,groove,sludge

Heretic = attack, assault

If they go with this, obviously we all know the alaphabet thing, but also it would mean the new record (if and when it comes out!) should be more or less a sludge/groove fest.

I heard something about Trey recording his riffs and then picks em out backwards.

Notice the similarities between Pain Divine-introriff backwards and Heaving Earth-introriff forwards

God of Emptiness and Disturbance In The Great Slumber are probably the most similar ones I think. And Blessed & Inquisition. :xx:

Really interesting stuff, I wonder if all of this was intentional. If it was that's pretty cool, and if it wasn't that's scary. :bang:

Great find! I didn't know that. Thank you for the enlightment.

I also suspected this awhile ago: he flips the coin each album on the fast and slow approach, so I also agree concerning the new album.

Someone should ask Trey about all this in an interview. Very curious about his answer...

Yeah exactly, but then on the other hand... He is also known or at least has mentioned it himself that in approaching ideas, he's a "paradigm" shifter. So, on that logic, they could suddenly halt doing the alphabet thing altogether as well as any older approaches. So who knows, could be new approaches all around.

Yes, that makes it each time only predictable afterwards ;)

Meanwhile you could kind of already check out how the I album is gonna be by reversing the Gateways to Annihilation riffs ;)

I think a paste from a review from metal archives gives a nice motivation for Trey's backward riffs:

"Just a little more trivia: Trey Azagthoth said in an interview that one of his musical influences (apart from Mozart, guitar heroes and early black/death/thrash bands) was backwards music, and that he often tried to give his riffs and compositions the same feel one would get from listening to backwards music, that eerie, almost "perverted" (in some sick sense of the word) or even "satanic" world of backwards music,"

Looking 'backwards' on this thread, I am surprised Trey came up with so little amount of riffs for the I album whereas he could easily just reverse the Gateways riffs, or have they already been reversively recorded? -Captain Hindsight

It's the verse riff in ten more dead and At1with0 verse riff. Has anyone tried reversing it and listening to it ?. I mean I know it won't be exact the same but there's some rhythms in the riff there that both songs share. Although at1with0 is far more straight forward sounding.

The backwards stuff has always been interesting, but at the same time, it's kind of been disappointing. I remember when "Covenant" came out, I heard the backwards "Blasphemy" riffs in "Rapture" and felt like Trey ran out of ideas for that song and recycled riffs. Shit, some friends of mine and I used to sing "Blaspheme the ghost!!!" whenever "Rapture" came on. I'm not dissing "Covenant," but the feeling of "oh I've heard that before" was definitely there in parts.

I've never been a fan of "Domination," and a lot of that has to do with the duo of "Caesar's Palace" and "Inquisition (Burn With Me)," where a lot of backwards riff rear their heads. The idea's OK in moderation, but to do it that much makes it seems like an attempt to recycle old stuff due to a lack of inspiration.

That's to assume that inspiration can only come from the external. Why can't it be that one is "inspired" by their own creativity?

It makes no difference how Trey comes up with a riff and in fact seems more integral if he could create a whole new song from

a previous part into a new whole. He can't rip himself off; if it's from him, it's from him. So the only thing one can do is either

appreciate and embrace Trey-isms or dislike and turn away from it. But to dislike it because of what he did is redundant: it's possible

you just want something else.

Regarding Illud: uros said it, the whole album is ass-backwards :lol:

Not backwards stuff, but something you have look at before, Bob.

Blessed intro.

Is it just me, or is the voice from whomever is shouting to the crowd VERY similiar to how Jared Anderson sounds during his time in MA? :alien:
