It is true that Deicide has been putting out sub par material for twice as long as the time since the last good Morbid Angel album. Still, I think anyone with ears has the right to talk shit about IDI.

The stuff that Deicide did after Once... doesn't appeal to me. Most of it is weak. But at least it's death metal and at least Glen isn't singing "we been bashin' god's son, since 1991" or "we're livin' hardcore blasphemous, we'll always suck the virgin Mary's pussy lips" or even "the caco daemon marching on, man." The latter day Deicide stuff is weak, but at least it's not weak and self-referential and counter to what they always stood for. Illud is all three.

True true. I also like how chainsaw-y the bass guitar sounds. Like it's gonna rip your head off any second.

Of course, the material is really killer, their best imo. Revocate the agitator! :xx:

He was talking to a journalist and drunk on tequila when he said he was going to kill himself at 33. Then it got around and he never denied it. But it was never a real plan.

I gotta be honest - the last three Deicide albums (Stench, Till Death, and To Hell With God) kick the everloving shit out of Illud. Deicide has never been on the same "spiritual" level or have had the unbelievable lava that MA brings, but after Illud, MA has nothing to show in that department. This should have been the cover to Illud:

All my spittle showering from earlier aside, I agree that Legion is one helluva an album. For me, I think it is the best album Deicide did. I also think when the Hoffman brothers left it dealt a severe blow to them musically but I can also honestly say I never considered nor do I consider now myself a fan of this band. Glen has repeatedly stated in interviews over the decades that he is a christian Satanist so I have to accept that the limitation of his "spiritual" works would be, well, very limited since he limits himself to begin with. I would not mind seeing them live and Glenn very well may be an interesting hard-on bearer to have a beer with but that is the extent of it for me. I appreciate the compactness of their songs and each one is able to stand on its own, which is impressive. I remember the hatred the two bands had for each other back in the day and I believe that is probably why I never got more into Deicide as my loyalty was with Morbid Angel. Similar to the old Metallica vs Megadeth feud from waaaaaayyyyy back. Showing age now.

And as one of the members here who does like IDI I also have to be honest and agree that any of Deicide's albums as a whole is superior when it comes to just speed, intensity, and in your face action when put up against IDI. But overall Deicide will never and can never come close to the musical prowess of Azagthoth and Company. Though I am having to continually digest and accept that MA experimented with some interesting shit :necro: on this offering, Morbid Angel is about to have that crown snatched away from them and it is only by themselves giving it away.

The "J" album will need to be monumental and go back to doing what they excelled at or MA will be relegated to a lower tier never to arise again, but there is still hope for them.

Fuck, I never figured I would say those above words; they taste like bile in my mouth. :tear:
I'm sorry but even in considering "The Ancient Ones" as a metaphor, by virtue of what "they" are, "the masses" and them do not go hand in hand let alone the same sentence. That's the whole point. When MA did what they used to do, it was exclusive: not just for anyone.
Bob - you are spot on. A ridiculous drunk rambling pile of stupidity is what that was from me. Exclusivity is a great way of expressing it and that is gone now. Even going back and reading the lyrics again and again, they are so childlike when compared to any song off any of their previous works. It is disheartening. :santa:

I am worried it may take longer if Dave is still going to be part of the Terrorizer lineup with their release coming out next year.

[edit] OR: From a strictly business relationship, if this album were to be a flop, don't know if it is tracking that way or not, but if sales were much lower than expected is it possible Dave could be asked to leave, but then again, I can't get on the wagon this was all Dave as Trey had the final voice. Interview after interview I have read acknowledges that the entire album was Trey's from start to finish. Other members contributed but overall the final decision were all Trey's so if that is true, than, shit. I gotta stop thinking about this, where's that new Hate Eternal . . . . . {walks off muttering obscenities under his breath while glaring :evil: }

Ahh the new Hate Eternal... now if you want death metal with subtle experimentation that doesn't convolute the genre, this is it man. Aside from my desire to want to hear a sonic 180 with HE productions, musically this is what we need now in light of illud.

Ha some teenager at the HE gig was taking Rutan to task for having no dynamic range. Erik was a good sport about it.

I like the way the latest sounds more than the previous one, but the vox sound buried to me. I thought that I, monarch was his best *balanced* HE mix as far as being able to hear the instruments.

I couldn't agree more about I monarch. Relatively speaking, the new one definitely sounds better. Overall the albums after conquering sort of all have a sonic signature that I geniunely believe is not letting the brutality shine with clarity: ya know, big, full, and 3D [if that makes sense]. It's just my opinion though. I do understand what it's like mixing your own stuff and it is difficult. I would really love to hear another's take on a HE mix. An elite sonic sounding record is the final icing on the cake for HE.

The dynamic range comment I think is due to some miscomprehension as to what is needed. WHo knows though the kid probally had the right sentiment, he just used the wrong wording there. Metal in general is not really a music that calls for dynamic range. There is such a thing though as creating a mix that conveys "dynamics" amongst the instruments and betwee them as well as they interact. A metal mix or master can still however sound squashed, lifeless or flat. But still dynamic range is suitable terminology for acoustic, classical or jazz styles of music.

I know what you mean regarding 3D aspect. I think a part of that is stereo imaging, to be honest, contributing to the creation of a soundstage. IMO a good mix sounds better over loudspeakers than with headphones. The headphones are nice for isolation but shit tends to sound "inside your head" as one would expect. I think handling low end is also a huge part of the puzzle (although the whole spectrum is important). Especially in death metal where you often have a lot of detuning and you have the kicks going constantly at times, it's hard to have a nice full low end without it getting too muddy.

As far as mixing your own stuff...honestly I think Fury and Flames is a clear example of the mixer (Rutan) being so close to the project that he lost some perspective, or at least the ability to be objective. I think any outside producer or alternate mixer would have immediately said hey, it sounds heavy, but I can't really hear your guitars. I think because he knew the riffs so intimately, his brain must have "filled in the blanks" during playback, because you can't really hear them in the final mix. Kind of like times that I've been to a show and it doesn't sound great, but since I know what the song sounds like my brain kinda tricks me into thinking that the guitars are really clear, or the vocals or what have you.
The dynamic range comment I think is due to some miscomprehension as to what is needed. Actually I think you're right about the kid using maybe the wrong terminology. English was clearly his second language (from his accent I think he may have been Japanese). You would not expect a ton of dynamic range on a HE record as you don't have quiet, chill passages, JJ playing an acoustic fretless bass and Jade hitting a snare drum with brushes for a tripped out section, etc. But what I more hear lacking at times is that dynamic aspect of the instrumentation where the individual parts "pop out" where they're supposed to. A lot of times it sounds heavy and all but sort of homogenous, sonically. Especially on this new one, as much as there is intense blasting going on a lot of the time, I think there were opportunities for a "richer" mix harmonically at times that were missed. I don't know the titles well enough yet to mention many specific examples, but I remember parts in the first song, toward the end of Haunting Abound, and a few others where I thought that parts just didn't "shine" individually and they needed to.

Anyway, it's a really great record.

Even with Radikult, Dave is way cooler than Benton could ever hope to be.

Fuck, Dave can wear a pink tutu on stage and hump Trey's leg to it and he's still be better than Benton.

My favorite Benton story is him and the family were at a "Pick Your Own Strawberries" place and the guitarist of Monstrosity saw him and said "Hi". Glen proceed to tell him "you enver saw me here".

Boy does someone take himself waaaaay too fucking seriously. "Shit man, I can't but the new Deicide album, that fucker eats strawberries".

Maybe that's why every tour they do is cancelled, he's too busy picking berries

Yep headphones are great for checking critical errors or glitches but it takes alot of experience to be able to mix or master on them accurately let alone solely rely on them. In fact, one even could completely miss psychoacoustic effects that can only be experienced over speakers with the proper and natural interaction of the environment and your ears. May be I can do a small snippet demomstration at presenting a different take of some HE stuff like i did with Cleansed in Pestilence, if some of you are interested? I really wanted to give this new album a go at least at the mastering, I was telling JJ, but I suppose my timing wasn't good and it was all already planned to go where it finally went.
