Things NOT allowed in Death Metal:

At The Gates inspired riffs

Rap-like vocal patterns

Dominating Keyboards

Breakdowns

Humor

Female vocals

Digital sounding productions (not that most fans would notice the difference anyway)

Groove riffing (alá Pantera)

Hardcore vocals (DiSalvo and Malevolent's Eternal comes to mind)

etc etc.

All of these rules are broken all the time. But not all bands get away with it unpunished. A classic example is ATG. Most fans agree that Slaughter of The Soul is a classic. But you're not allowed to like anything inspired by it.

Isn't Death Metal about pushing the limits though. About breaking boundaries. These rules are there to be broken. If a Death Metal band wants to play with four pianos instead of guitars, bass, drums... then why shouldn't they? It's just about making the most extreme music you can. And trying to express something.

It's not about a specific death metal frame or whatever. It's about what I like, and what I expect to hear. This band does have a specific meaning to me personally, and the band has changed now. I won't change beacause of that. Peraphs people that doesn't listen to Morbid Angel generally will open their eyes for them with this new album, and that's great!

slaughter of the soul wasn't very good so i don't know why you'd expect anything inspired by it to be anything worth writing home about. if you'd prefer to invoke the first two albums however, well that's a whole different bag of apples.

but yes, there are certain conventions and characteristics that make death metal, death metal. some bands successfully manage to add 'foreign' elements, but most who attempt to do that wind up failing miserably. what's so controversial about that? why are we even discussing this? it all winds up reducing to 95% of everything being garbage, with or without the standard conventions.

a couple of points here:

1. my post you quoted (about pop-psych shit) wasn't in response to you. i was responding to verbal, who was poking fun at my use of the word 'rationalization' in a previous post. you don't even enter into the equation in this scenario, until you forced yourself in and got all huffy over it. for no reason.

2. ignoring that, why would you even expect people to give serious answers to you at this point? you routinely respond with petty personal attacks in any discussion that raises substantive points contrary to your assertions.

1. My bad.

2. Sounds more like you're talking about yourself. My problem here is that my opinion isn't tolerated. It really is that simple. I wouldn't have been criticized one moment had I simply submitted to the opinions of the most dominating posters on MABB.

That also explains why I receive private messages from people who agree with me, but have decided not to post on this board in fear of getting insulted and ridiculed.

honesty commands me to write this.

I think your posts concerning Illud deserve a big fat Thumbs UP!!!

I completely agree with your more open-minded view of it as an artistic statement in MAs career contrary to most trOO longtime MA fans on here who apparently keep wanting FFF or Covenant rehashed.

Your assesments are clear, to the point, objective and actually polite, so big cheers for that!

I wanted to say this cause you get the shit for your opinion but maybe not enough kudos.

Skoll to you dude!

MABB ironically seems to be the antithesis of what Morbid Angel is all about. It's more fascist and mundane than any of the lyrics on Domination ever was.

lol ok. you can drop the veiled persecution accusations 'cuz that's not at all what's going on here. no, your opinion obviously isn't shared by the overwhelming majority of people here. but plenty of people have attempted to engage you in detailed discussion, and people who disagree with you, in turn tend to get a couple general boilerplate responses, such as:

-general insults, stuff like the whole "you're not a real fan" spiel; this is quite honestly one of the most clueless accusations you can make about the bulk of the posters who venture into, and comment on the threads, within this subforum

-deflections like "its all subjective" or "its up to the individual to decide"; we want substantive discussion, not tired and obvious meta-discussion tropes like these

-misinterpreting peoples' posts and then responding to what you apparently want them to be saying

all of which seem to be present in this thread! (and best of all, you're now attempting to turn this around on me) this is a persistent pattern and i'm not the only one to notice it. i honestly don't know if you're simply not bothered to go beyond that, or just deliberately behaving that way to get a rise out of people.

if it's the former, i don't know why you're shocked that nobody agrees with you, when you're not even willing to put in the work to advance a convincing argument for your position. if it's the latter, congratulations! as a result of your z-grade trolling campaign, some people have been mildly annoyed and others think you're really into the new album and then a couple others think you're dumb!

I think the only reason a few posters are slagging you off is your "allow yourself to like it" kinda talk.I'd say alot of people here don't like certain styles of music in general simply because they think it's just shit musically and whatever else comes with it.

Personally I always hated Marrilin Manson's ect. music and so it's very hard to allow myself to like material like Radikult..well what the sample sounded like atleast. That is what it reminded me of.There's no reason why I should like it because it's MA.I'm not here to argue about it though. But that's the basic argument and it's quite pointless..everyone is gonna listen to it with an open mind when they can. These arguments get out of hand very quickly on here. :hard-on bearer:

I think you cunts should either:

A.Stop with the insults

or

B.Have a full fledged,no holds barred fruital internet argument,so I can laugh at it.

What i do not get is that everybody has his favorite and non favorite album. Most of here know i just cannot get into the groove of Gateways. So what..? They have a full catalogue of stuff. But when one says, based on the stuff we have heard: A EP, Existo leaked, 1,5 minute samples and a drum clinic video, that one is not impressed with the stuff out there at the moment he is:

A, not a fan

B, not open minded enough

C, negative

Personally i've tried to base my coments soley on the things i've heard. And i've kept from commenting until i heard it. Also trying not to impose my opinion upon others. And if i loved it i would say so without shame. WTF afraid of getiing ridiculed on a forum because you like something?

Further more i applaud every band who expands, breaks boundaries and what not. Though when you are creating a hype about incorporating the reall extreme Gabber hardcore from Rotterdam, Holland (Originated in Club Parkzicht where we held our school parties so i know how that stuff sounds like) and call your song To Extreme! It should be. I kinda looked forward to it tbh.

David made a comment on Extreme Agressions from Kreator once, saying it was not extreme nor agressive and asked why would they name the album that way..

AS i said, all of what i am saying is based on what i've heard. When I hear the whole thing, in context i might be pleasntly surprised. So far I'm not. Never have you hear me say people are crazy for liking it.

Just ignore that hard-on bearer. All he's capable of is poorly framed passive aggressive arguments. He also conveniently ignores all the posters who aren't at all impressed with D, G, and H. I haven't been here long and that was one of the first things I noticed. But you will have to "allow" yourself to ignore him, so beware.

If you would have said: "Heck, I think I'm enjoying it even more because of all the controversy." I could easily respect that. But when you are confusing discussing and liking/not liking with whining and complaining you are starting the shitfest all over again. So far I have not read anybody ridiculing someone for liking it. In contrary, people who do not like it are getting insulted in various means.

So far the people who've had comments (which you interpet as negative because you do not agree) elaborated on those, and ex plained their motivations. You come in and call people whiners and what not without any substance.

People can feel any way they want. I just find it a it "odd", "strange" or just "look at me I'm deep" when people claim "spirituality" about music (or most anything else).
It just has to be a piss take, I mean I think Morbid Angel made this to cause a stir above all else quite frankly. This is their 'joke' album (If such thing exists), and it's also done at a critical time in their career for extra oomph. Or maybe it was basically a suicide mission. Where most bands just quit, perhaps they wanted to go out with bang ?
Hey guys, lets take our name, a legend in the genre, and completely fuck it in the ass for the finale! What a great way for us to go out, everyone will think it's hilarious and bold.
Hehe. Well maybe my idea of it being suicide mission is a bit farfetched. But the first point still stands, this is done purposefully with the idea of pissing people off. During reading those really negative reviews I just couldn't help but allow my mind to imagine trey and/or Davids mindset during this albums conception and wonder if these negatives are exactly as they planned. So much of the album seems like it's designed to irritate.

Either that or it's a genuine album in which they wanted to express their other musical interests and also believe it is somehow a good idea. In a way I hope it is not this...
if i want the advice on spiritual i will not listen the MA. it is only a musical entertainment................... i am saying honest :santa:
I guess to each their own, but I find the "spiritual connection" a tad disturbing.
Are you saying you do NOT find a spiritual connection or there is one and each has to find it himself, just curious :santa:
People can feel any way they want. I just find it a it "odd", "strange" or just "look at me I'm deep" when people claim "spirituality" about music (or most anything else).
Spirituality and music have been intertwined from the earliest moments of human spirituality. It doesn't seem strange at all to see that.

Creativity is the closest thing to spirituality I welcome. It triggers the same portions of my brain that 'religion' once did, before I realized common-spirituality is a total shit and declared myself an Atheist. It feels good and I welcome the feeling it brings. I let that feeling flow through in my own creations and I feel it very heavily in Morbid Angel's music.

Considering the long link between music and spirituality in mankind's history, the purpose of it is something neurobiologists should look for (and I would love to read research into it).

Well, now you e xplained perfectly why you cannot understand people missing something in Illud.

Creating and playing music, as wel as listening and submerging in it, can be both meditative and trancending. For some MA was a vessel to this. Now the vessel is empty.

"Empty" would be an improvement. It's filled with shit, which smells so foul that I writhe in disgust.
Interesting. You and carpet_Salesman are the first members I have seen post that so I was curious. It grabbed me spiritually from the first note of Fall From Grace, but it is very hard to articulate but thank you for sharing.
Different strokes for different folks I suppose. I'm not a musician or artist in any fashion, if that matters at all. Sure plenty of music "moves me" or puts me in a good mood or gives me a "head rush". But nothing in a "spiritual" or any "uber deep" fashion.

I'm casting with a very broad brush when I say this, but I think alot of people use that term to make themselves look "cool" or "deep". Most of the time it just comes across as "poppycock" to me.

But hey, whatever gets you outta bed in the morning.

What do you mean transcendent and meditative?

Do you mean you feel relaxed and you like the thoughts/images your mind throws around when you listen to the music?

For some reason this makes me feel sad for you, no, pity maybe and I am not meaning this in a derogatory way, it may come across that way, but WOW. Then again, maybe the very definition and understanding we each have of spirituality is the crux, but still, to never have
nothing in a "spiritual" or any "uber deep" fashion.
way from music makes me just sad that you have missed out on one of the most special connections humans have, a connection which I believe is the defining thing that moves us above the animal kingdom to being the superior mammals on this planet.

When people start talking like that, they sound exactly like religious nutjobs.

Either you are referring to some sort of vague supernatural bullshity thing, or are just using that type of language to express your like of Morbid Angel music.

Are you just referring to the stream of consciousness you have when listening to their music? And how lovely that is?
