serious answer, no. that kinda stuff has been supplanted by the internet -- interviews, photos, newsletter-style content and the like can all be placed online at no charge, and all the actual content can easily be gathered from outside sources for free to boot. even if they produced some kind of package that they didn't provide online, it'd wind up getting scanned and uploaded anyway, and at cost to the band, so there's really not much incentive for them to produce any sorta fan club type package these days.



sadly, the days of fan mailings and such are a bygone era. it's neat to reminisce about, but i'd be shocked to see any bands, especially relatively smaller ones (in the grand commercial scheme), producing that sorta content nowadays.

i did a wee bit of tape and CDR trading with internet folk back in the dialup days (way past the 'glory days' of the tape trading era, which i was too young to take part in) when downloading full albums wasn't feasible and tons of underground metal was just impossible to find besides. it was a time when the concept of scarcity in music still existed! that was back in the late 90's, pretty much the dying days of the very concept of 'underground', in practical terms anyway.



the more 'personal' connection is definitely missing these days, to an extent anyway, but the tradeoff of zero cost and the effortless ease of the current setup is certainly nothing to scoff at.

This I agree with but was thinking maybe there was something they could do. Just to throw a few out there Slipknot, Metallica, Lamb of God, Megadeth, Slayer still have fan clubs where the there are a simple perks such as special giveaways, members only boards where you can talk directly with the band, limited shirts and albums that only fans can get, etc. I am sure it does not generate much revenue but the concept and application is nice.



The idea of bands being directly in touch with their fans has always been really cool to me. The internet should make this even easier. My daughter is a member of LoG's and Slipknot's and she gets different things and shit. Anywho, toss it up as being another death-knell brought about by Internet.



I did tape trading, and it was way cool. Hell used to be the only way to find out any info on your band was to trade zines, literally have MAIL-based writing. Shit. So much of that stuff though was lost in that flood, fucking fuck fuckers makes me very sad. I did not realize how important at the time but one of my first trades I got was No Life Til Leather - And the rest they say is history!
