in what country did you meet him? I know he's Polish and moved to Sweden and lateron to the Usa? I know he auditioned for second guitar player in MA but sadly didn't got the job. Never understood why exactly. Pete thanked him in a MA thankslist btw (incl spelling errors). I'm very curious which new musical endeavor he'll partake on next: Luciferion was great I even liked Lost Horizon and Against the plagues was also great and every cover they did I like as well.[/quote]

I met him in Gothenburg, where we both live. Luciferion was based in Gothenburg, he's been living here for the most of his life. Immolation does also thank him in the booklet of Here in After. He also told me that he visited the Deicide guys at the same time when he was in the US

I think that was one of the tours they did supporting Covenant. Black Sabbath was apparently one of Richard's favorite bands so they wanted to give him a chance to see if his attitude/work ethic had changed. But that wasn't the case, so he wasn't asked to rejoin.

Hmm I think Death is the death metal version of Possessed: just compare Seven churches to Scream bloody gore...

Mercyful fate indeed: that's where Trey's initial great catchy melodics come from: Altars of madness is full of them.

Strangely he developed the slow creepy melodics displayed on Blessed, went with those and sadly kinda dropped the MF melodics in his newer compositions.

The problem with the origin of death metal is that there are a wealth of bands from the early/mid 1980s that could fall under the category!

Death Strike, who later became Master, released their demo Fuckin' Death in 1985 and it contains Pay to Die, which would later appear on the Master debut album in 1990!

Death were releasing demos under the name of Mantas since 1984 until their debut Scream Bloody Gore was finally put together and released in 1987. I think this is a very unique album because you have two death metal gods, Chris Reifert and Chuck Schuldiner handling all the duties on the album. Chris played the drums whilst Chuck did everything else. Autopsy's debut demo also came out in 1987.

Possessed perhaps invented the term death metal with their debut demo in 1984. Death had not used the term, but had used the title Death by Metal for one of their most well known demo tapes. Possessed also released the first full length album out of all these bands, Seven Churches, in 1985. Some people say that Possessed are more thrash metal than death metal, but I think they have all the characteristics of death metal on their album. It's incredible to think an album as heavy as Seven Churches came out just two years after the album that kick started the whole thrash metal scene, Kill 'Em All was released!

It's even more fascinating to think that the demos by all these bands popped up so quickly. The 80s are my favorite era for heavy metal because everything was constantly evolving and changing at such an alarmingly fast rate and it's the root of all the major extreme styles that are popular today. Even Mayhem released their Deathcrush EP in 1987 and were playing shows as early as 1984, with their first demo appearing in 1986, Pure Fucking Armageddon.

I think you can see Possessed being one of the first "death" metal bands, it just evolved into something bigger which eventually was seen as "death metal". I think Possessed just kick-started it, among Death, Master, Repulsion, etc. and with all the evolved subgenres that came from it, you can now call Possessed more "thrashy", because you have that point of reference to the "evolved death metal" and the "thrash metal" varieties.

The Mantas - Death by metal demo and Death - Death by metal demo AND the Possessed - Death metal demo all came out in 1984 AND Morbid Angel started haha A very creative year

Possessed were lucky to have an earlier record deal to get their debut out. Death wasn't that quick due to line up hassle and released like 25 demo's between 1984 - 1986.

@Void:interesting point about the hindsight viewpoint, but on second thought: thrash was earlier then death so that retrospect viewing framework is not correct.

Really? I would agree that Seven Churches has a more thrashy sound than SBG but to say SBG is "pure" death metal (which seems to me to be what you're driving at here, correct me if I'm wrong?) is something I couldn't agree with at all. SBG is incredibly thrashy in places!

The origins of the different extreme metal subgenres (death metal in particular) seem to be the topic of intense debate. I actually think its impossible to pinpoint the genesis of death metal as a genre to any one band at any one time. The style developed gradually from thrash through the work of a variety of bands (some more well known than others). I've heard people say that bands like Death were revolutionary but I don't think they were, death metal wasn't a revolution, it was more about gradual change over time.

Back on topic: Overoth is one to check out if you've not already. They released their debut record, Kingdom Of Shadows, last year.

Bloodbath have been mentioned before in a similar thread. The only album I've heard is The Fathomless Mastery. In it, I hear a lot of Vader to their sound, who also have a strong Morbid Angel influence (though I would never call them a sound-alike); but, a song like Mock The Cross has a very strong Morbid Angel vibe to it.

Centvrian is one of my favorites, among those with a strong Morbid Angel influence, and I usually chase Of Purest Fire with some Morbid Angel in playlists. Let us not forget ArsonA - In Nothingness!

What happened to that duder?

Where was this discussed before? Was it 2.0 or have we already had a thread on the subject here?

It's a difficult discussion since it's so enormously open to interpretation. First you have to determine what is exactly thrash and what is exactly deathmetal?

To me, thrash has more open chords next to the palm muting, whereas deathmetal has more lower-tuned palmmuting and lesser open chords.

I'm not a guitar player though, so I could be totally wrong but this is what my hearing feeling tells me.

I'm convinced that Death was revolutionary though, on more then one occasion.

Of course the style evolved gradually (I think evolved is more accurate then developed) but to me it's crystal clear that 1984 was the key-year. Also in the Terrorizer mag, discussed in another topic recently, it is mentioned that horrormovies where also an important factor. Probably the combination of having consumer access to a VCR and movies like the Italian Gallo movies with the eerie Goblin music (intro of Zombie Ritual!) and The exorcist (Possessed) are evident as influencial for the death metal template.

To pulsar, yes Mock the Cross is pretty much a Where the Slime Live tribute. I think Blood Red Throne also have a song like that. If you like Bloodbath and have only heard The Fathomless Mastery, you are really missing out, as in my opinion Nightmares Made Flesh is their best album and has their best song, Eaten.

In reference to the definition of death metal, it would be almost impossible to have one definition for the style because there are so many different sounds that fall under the title of death metal. Compare Autopsy to Cannibal Corpse!

I think the way we can define the origin, however, would be generally chromatic riffing styles coupled with either very dissonant or very eerie sounding lead guitar parts and of course double-bass/fast drum beats and low/guttural vocals. The vocals I think, can go back to 1983 with Hellhammer, and if you've heard Hellhammer you know how utterly awesome Tom's vocals are. Their Satanic Rites demo has some of the heaviest metal I've ever heard on it, especially for 1983. They were also on a compilation called Death Metal with bands like Helloween and Running Wild in 1984!

I've seen several interviews however where Tom has stated that they never considered themselves death metal, and death metal was just a term he and Martin Eric Ain used at the time for a name of a zine they were writing. The term death metal didn't start to become a defined music genre until, as I think most people would tend to agree, 1984 when Possessed and Death popped up with their demos.

One thing I've always said is that I consider Altars of Madness to be Reign in Blood taken to the next level. I think it's interesting to consider that Abominations of Desolation was recorded in 1986 and Reign in Blood also came out that year. Trey was unhappy with the Abominations recording, MA went through a couple member changes, and we didn't see their debut until 1989 under the title of Altars of Madness. Some of the songs that appeared on Abominations that appear on Altars are considerably faster, for example Chapel of Ghouls. Both Altars and Reign in Blood have the chromatic riffing styles with very dissonant lead work, but I consider Altars to be the superior of the two albums.

I have no problem with getting a better idea of the economics of extreme music and where to draw the lines between artistic intent and whether the product is at all marketable.

But that other thing is clearly just a self-important get together that's supposed to seem academic, as if anything worthwhile will come out of it.
