They shifted from Vincent's form of ego-centrism ("we're here to dominate, etc") to a more speculative expression ("Blessed be the Ones
Who where here before and after remain"). It's not that the philosophy of Morbid Angel radicultly changed (LOL). It's like they've added a new cool ingredient.
I think everyone understands that at this point. But that was not what I asked. I was speaking technical terms. How are the lyrics more advanced than those David wrote?
He was more subjective, but more trivial also.
Can't say I agree about that. The whole notion that FFF is "deeper" rings hollow to me. It's just a different approach to the same topic. That's all.

Re: Domination lyrics
till G the one most common philosophy i found in MA music is that, "Truth is what you Believe" this is the basic feeling which i get, the same is what DOMINATE means, People say Altars have satanic Lyrics but What i feel is it gives the strength to think against the common human Believes, like "Dead Your God is Dead" can be said its satanic but I think saying that give me strength to go against millions of human and their limiting believe. Not just following the exact same words, i try to find the basic feeling behind it.
This is what I feel, people can interpret Music in their own way.
At any rate, Domination serves a militant style, philosophical awareness type of prose. It's like an apex, a culmination of their earlier work as described through more of a human's mind but an overman type that's realized that all of these words previous and present are metaphors! and still very much about self empowering. The other albums serve this purpose through the occult, albeit, it's all drawing the same power-centers; these are power words expressed through "otherworldly" metaphor and surrealistic metaphor. The way I see it, the albums cater to various brain hemispheric thinking. I for one see them all as worthy and befitting for each vibe. It's ridiculous to compare them.
It's all about thoughts made flesh. Going out into the world and using your philosophy to put a mark on it. In that way Illud Divinum Insanus can be seen as an even more personal continuation of the Domination theme. Less external references.
Domination still harbors the geniunity of anger and derision of most of mankind and its lies. There has always been a classy and poetic approach. Illud, aside from the obvious asinine lyrics & titles its vibe, atmosphere, and execution seems like something global; for "everyone"; dare I say egalartarian and watered down. There is no feeling of a "its for 'us' " but more so "its for anyone". It's friendly and conforms and doens't feel like a lance upon the everyday banality like previous records. With the other records I felt continuity, a "building to". With this record I feel estrangement. This record is for Hot Topic kids.
That is despite all the fine words purely subjective.
That's a small corner you paint yourself into by using the "subjective" escape route. For all you can surmise then is that there is no continuity of the true MA vibe with Illud and merely your subjective propensity to the style. It either is a continuation or you find it completely subjective. You can't have it one way and then use the subjective bailout to avoid not supporting any evidence as to why Illud is a continuation or even belonging in the MA catalog. I will outwardly say it is not a continuation!
What surrounds Illud is not an evil and subversive atmosphere but visuals, music, and lyrics that you'd pervasively find with other bands. [Incidentally, liking other bands or music is not an issue here, it's the aspect of them sounding like what they are and Morbid Angel sounding like Morbid Angel.] If you want to argue that it is a continuation by scraping up a line here and there from the songs that give some semblance of an MA vibe, I'd say that's precisely the antithesis of continuity. On no other album do I find myself clambering through tracks trying to seek out only "good tracks". Every track served the album; the lyrical content served the album; the musical content served the album. And every album distinctive no less! I had no feelings of estrangement and nothing reflected estrangement. Go ahead and try to claim that for this album. Call it - "subjective." That's nonsense. I will say it again, no real MA fan will be happy with this album. Those who are happy with are either new to MA - they prefer the "superficial" sonority of something like it; a dabbling to add to an ecclectic array of taste OR were simply not a true fan of the unique original style. Like it or not, regarding lyrics, all previous albums at least made an attempt at something creative; something of prose; a kind of story telling through some theme. Not just some haughty phrases like "we're hardcore maniacal" that you'd see written on a high schooler's binder. "Subjective" is a copout. No wool here....

This is simply not true. It's very much a continuation of the Vincent era albums and that's on more than one level.

You haven't even heard the album yet. I think you need to relax a little and spend some time with it once it's out. You might learn a thing or two.

"No real MA fan will blah blah". Give me a fucking break. Since when was your SUBJECTIVE definition of a "real" Morbid Angel fan elected as the truth above truths? I have been a DIE HARD fan since Covenant and I like it. So I'm not a real fan? What the fuck...

Keep repeating that one phrase. Take a look at the rest of the lyrics and you'll realize that they are quite similar to the A-D era albums.

Between you, that Mithras hard-on bearer, and the samples available, Mr. Mithras' analysis strikes me as being much, much more accurate than yours. I think it's because a) he never got into petty, unresolvable arguments involving subjectivity, and b) he doesn't work something having to do with David Vincent into practically every post.

Music is in the ear of the beholder. We all have our references and preferences. I'm just pointing out the conflict between using a scholar language to be accurate and in depth and then judging something before the maximum quantity of data is available. It tells me that the said person isn't quite as smart as he would like to be.

Totally sums up the dumber lyrics we've heard so far. It's self parody at this point.

The fact that there are a few decent lyrics on this album doesn't change the fact that there are some that are really NOT along the lines of A-D. And in most cases (from the samples), they go with songs that are also not along the lines of...oh, I don't know...Morbid Angel.
Trey used to talk, around the time that Formulas was released, about having made some personal advances in the sense of not using "ego words" any more and not being arrogant in interviews, not making these big claims. Paraphrasing, but something like "yeah, we may have been the first death metal band signed to a major and getting death metal videos played a lot on MTV, but did I really need to be saying that?" Now they have actual songs talking about how they've been crossing the line since 1989, and their sick groove and magic, and yes, how they're living hardcore radical. Sounds like a step backwards, developmentally.

Sounds like you're busting his balls for being literate. Obviously we haven't heard the rest of the album, but hearing the rest of Radikult or I Am Morbid isn't going to make the parts we've heard suddenly disappear.
Slimegod, making a bunch of words fit a piece of music does NOT make the lyric more lyrical in itself. Prayer of Hatred is more lyrical than Nothing Is Not though. You're absolutely right about that.
I never said that fitting words of some other origin into lyrics made them lyrical. I just said it was a challenge to take such text and fit it into a natural rhythm, which is what you said was lacking: rhythm. You said that an example of the same was what you needed to invalidate your argument. You have a whole album filled beginning to end with examples that do so.
You want to hear examples of death metal with words seemingly just shouted over the riffs with no concern for meter? Listen to Kataklysm's "The Orb of Uncreation." Lots of parts are like that, and it rules. Some of the older Cryptopsy stuff is close to being that way too, and it's also killer. And rhythmic, just not always predictably so.
That is despite all the fine words purely subjective.
You say this like your own claims are objective. This reminds me of that scene in Dead Poets' Society where the class is reading from a textbook, showing a numerical scale upon which the quality of poetry can be measured based upon "perfection" and "importance." They read this description of the system, and the teacher says "Excrement." Then instructs them to rip out the page and throw it out.

I just disagree with you at this point. I am pretty sure i am the newest MA fan on this board. But I can understand this point that this album is not in continuation as by my view I cant feel LIFE in the music any more. As the music till G, gives a feeling that music has been made so perfectly that It speaks. Illud has no serious feelings. Also the most disappointing thing, that musical influences are coming from a non-musical genre and cant believe its done by someone who had classical influences once
Even if there are 2 or 3 good tracks but still even making a single track with those bullshit influences disappoints as morbid angel is one of the 1st death metal band and had great influence on the extreme metal scene.

Re: Domination lyrics
I think it all boils down to if we'd rather have a band in the spirit of the hard-on bearer who used to cut himself with a ritual knife on stage or a hard-on bearer who wears big shiny shirts with pentagrams on them.
Whenever something is obviously bearing the mark of Dave I think it grows more and more towards the direction of Illud, Domination was not at that point but it was not in the same vein as A, B, C, F, G, or H.
It is based I think on spiritual strength and worldly strength. We can put A, B, and C in the spiritual strength category. D is part of the worldly strength category. Not one song mentions the ancient ones or anything from the Necronomicon, it's about DOMINATION. It's like a jock version of the occult, it's not really the same thing anymore. With Dave everything progresses into a "Dur-dur we're gonna fuck everyone up" and it loses the metaphor and spiritual symbolism that MA started out in. No more Shub-Niggurath, Yog-Sothoth, Azag-Thoth, Marduk, Tiamat, no more spiritual symbolism. I do like Where the Slime Live, but it honestly feels just like a pure atheist anthem and without symbolism. It's Nietzschean, and while I like that, it's still a departure from the rich metaphor and symbolism from the earlier albums, and the later ones without Dave on them.
As long as Dave is in the band I think Illud was bound to happen, but the fact that Trey let it happen means he's either feeling tapped out or he's not interested in the living continuum anymore

I am pretty sure there is something very new and different thing Trey must have added to his philosophies. It can be anything. He must be playing music for himself and dont want share it with humans.

You know, you keep posting something but you are not saying anything. To fit the premise of your conclusion you simply keep saying "you are wrong", essentially. You haven't said anything substantial to prove your point. Do you notice this or not?
Maximum quantity of data? There's that point of continuity again, going right over your head. Had I heard nothing then I would of course agree with that. I've been listening to over a minute samples, I'm taking in the vibe, I hear some of the lyrics, I see the titles. One does not need "maximum quantity" to understand the gist of something, least of all of something that is quality at any of its parts. You are not getting this point. Give me a sampler of any of the other albums and it will establish MA musical and lyrical edict - with force! I don't need salesman antics to see where it's all going dude. You keep talking about continuity and yet you miss the fact that by saying we would need to hear the rest, it's missed the mark: by very virtue of that I am disappointed; it is already telling you continuity is lacking of what MA is. And again this has not to do with subjectivity as you like to bring up but merely an assessment of what something is. There seems to be a consensus on what MA is - again, the means by which a forum can exist! The means by which something collective could exist. Fans. I mean you must be insane to think that anyone here would berate anything of the older repetoire in favor of Illud. That's utterly mad.

Also the most disappointing thing, that musical influences are coming from a non-musical genre and cant believe its done by someone who had classical influences once Even if there are 2 or 3 good tracks but still even making a single track with those bullshit influences disappoints as morbid angel is one of the 1st death metal band and had great influence on the extreme metal scene.

Not just some haughty phrases like "we're hardcore maniacal" that you'd see written on a high schooler's binder.
Totally sums up the dumber lyrics we've heard so far. It's self parody at this point.
Keep repeating that one phrase. Take a look at the rest of the lyrics and you'll realize that they are quite similar to the A-D era albums.
Music is in the ear of the beholder. We all have our references and preferences. I'm just pointing out the conflict between using a scholar language to be accurate and in depth and then judging something before the maximum quantity of data is available. It tells me that the said person isn't quite as smart as he would like to be.
Absolutely all of this.
I understand that many of you have started listening to Morbid Angel with Formulas, but that does not justify a lot of bullshit written...
Where one began listening means nothing. My first Morbid Angel albums were Covenant and Domination, around the time of Domination. I'd purchased and heard back to Altars before Formulas was released. A good deal of this forum's regular posters have been fans for quite a long time.

In my opinion, your consideration is a bit mundane, the message in "Eyes to See, Ears to Hear" is clearly "Think for yourself": simple title, but absolutely brilliant!!!

I'm not critisizing the meaning of the song; just the choosing of words of the title. Unbelievably boring

Re: Domination lyrics
Honestly i never payed that much attention to lyrics in metal music in general, if a band writes good lyrics or a concept album, then its a plus to know what they are talking about, but to me , music is 99% percent of what i like in metal, lyrics the rest.As far as the Domination album , its probably my fave M.A album, but i guess im in minority here

All you have said with your 20.000 words is the following:
Your personal view of Morbid Angel is universal and the codex of any true fan.
Illud Divinum Insanus doesn't have any references to older Morbid Angel albums.
To understand the core concepts of Morbid Angel is to hate Illud.
I agree with none of those assessments. You act like you're some kind of Morbid Angel professor and while I respect you're knowledge and dedication I think you have misunderstood the band a great deal. You have starred yourself blind on a few factors and fail to see the bigger picture. Musical inspirations being one of them.
We will never come to an agreement and isn't that if anything true to the Morbid Angel spirit?

"the meaning that you give the event is the event"
You can validate any sort of statement with this logic regardless of if it carries any weight or not.
You come across as the type of person who sucks up whatever shit any band produces with undying devotion, no matter how SHIT what they put out is.
The only validation you have brought out to support yourself is: JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
Which does not solve anything, at all. You just say that then go on talking about how Dave is Jesus and can do no wrong. The new album has nothing to do with the occult or alternative spirituality. This has been the main focus of Morbid Angel for many years along with their message which they have always said is "think for yourself". I don't see how MARCH ON DESTRUCTOS!!11111 or WE'RE HARDCORE RADICaL!1111111111 agrees with either of these. The lyrics to the album are lazy and uninspired. There is no meat to them, its just Dave shouting about how badass he is which is the direction they were starting to take in Domination. There is almost zero meat to the actual music. It's stupid bouncy techno bullshit that kids who listenn to Breathe Carolina and Suicide Silence are gonna eat up like chocolate cake.
This is a lazy album by a band that is now lazy.

You know, you keep posting something but you are not saying anything. To fit the premise of your conclusion you simply keep saying "you are wrong", essentially. You haven't said anything substantial to prove your point. Do you notice this or not?

Actually, you kind of are. Which is quite funny when you think about it. themicrulah nailed it on the head. He gets the main idea here as do many others; the true MA fans here.
You are using the blanket statement of "musical inspiration" and allowing it to mean ANYTHING. You are a sucker for the flame of the week. That's a bullshit neo, new-age attitude of liberalism:
another form of mental disorder. You want to allow flagarant and indolent expressions take root in an artists' soil and you call that progression; you call it inspiration. I call it nonsense and chicanery. You keep breaking out these ad hominen attacks because I like to articulate my ideas. You are the true sophist here. You LOVE to say something without saying anything and you want everybody to jump on the band wagon.
On top of that you personally insult people here and talk down to them. We are not "buying" any of this; we're not "buying" the new MA. We of course admire and embrace the old stuff because they stayed true to what they are not shapeshift into a modern mishmash of lazy and uninspired crap that WE easily indentify as having lost its identity! You insist this is about opinions? I keep laughing to myself. That is short-sighted at best to think that this is a matter of a small stylistic question. This is a matter of core essence! Something of which is lacking and we are pointing out. And yes we are the true fans because we care enough to not let a bowel movement be claimed as a work of art - this is the best kind of check and balance a fan could provide for an artist. Why don't you open your eyes and notice this is NOT my codex, this is a shared sentiment. I am simply a mouth piece for it.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that themicrulah posted something so dead on and very well put. I think I need to go lie down.

This is going to be an endless discussion, back and forth thrash talk and we're not getting anywhere with it.
So either I'm locking these threads, which I don't want to do because heated discussions are always a good read! Or Mr
will have to come up in this piece.

This does make a lot of sense but there is a diffrence between being open minded and being totally relativistic. Morbid Angel is one of those bands hat never can be over interpretated, but majority of all die hard fans still thinks that ILLUD is drifting away from the original purpose / meaning of the band. And this is not only about Vincent and Domination, but also how Trey doesn't care anymore, or at least how he has mellowed about. In the F / G / H area he would always talk about how important the spiritual part of Morbid Angel is, and his philosophies about the living continuum, and ILLUD is a great contradiction to all those things, that always been the true purpose. It's not about the music necesarily, but the lyrics. I would really love to hear Treys opinion about Domination from his current point of view. Probably he would blather on about the paradigm shifting but to me (and probably to alot of other people here) that is just bullshit. It's not that I have nothing against change, but Morbid Angel is not what they used to be. There's nothing wrong with questioning your favourite band from a critical point of view, because that shows that you're alot into it, and if the "new" MA does not support the meaning that you've given the band, why should one shape his personal thought and meaning after the new direction of MA?

Another 15.000 words and you still don't realize that your opinion is just that. Your opinion.
Isn't that exactly extremely short-sighted, trivial and even prejudice? You should kill that ego and focus a little more on the living continuum.

I second that it'll be interesting to hear Trey's own thoughts on this. In the end he's the only person who can put an end to this discussion.
