Funeral Mist - Salvation (the first real neo-classic of this wave of Black Metal)

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice

Katharsis - Kruzifixxion

Watain - Casus Luciferi
Thanks. I knew the others but will give Katharsis a listen. I heard Antaeus a long time ago, but will give them another listen.

now tell me where can I find those longer samples?

New HE is amazing!!! But let's not compare Hate Eternal to Morbid Angel. They're 2 totally different bands.
I have no doubt that the songwriting on the new HE is going to be great, but how was the mix? I loved the last one musically but thought the guitars were really hard to decipher at times. Which is a shame because IMO Rutan is the true riff master.
hopefully we won't have to change the name of the forum if this album is truly going to be a big fail :redneck:
"The artists that should be formerly known as Morbid Angel"

And instead of "The Chapel" it might need to be "The dancefloor."

Those overlying melodies that just seem to float atop the chaos like mist over a fast moving river really grab me!!! This is easily the best Hate Eternal record so far!

New Hate Eternal is badass. Musically, it's an exlempar to staying within identifiable boundries yet transcending them at the same time.

On this record, there seems to be this very cool, very classic tinge of thrash in certain places. There's no gimmick there though! It's geniune Death Metal just as HE has always been.

Still exciting and interesting to listen to.

BUT, I am still not satisifed with the mix/overall production. Seriously, stack this up against other metal productions. HE productions, I've said before,

usually suffer from a kind of haziness, undefined veil, imo. I will say though, relative to FnF, this record has better controlled low end. MUCH better!

Holy shit, I thought the HE came out on June 10! Fuck, I should have it by now. Just ordered it.

Hmm. I kinda agree about their production, but I actually thought I, Monarch came out really well. Conquering was pretty raw, King of all Kings sounded thin to me, and FandF was indecipherable at times.

I am with you on them being a band that can push the boundaries of what is possible in death metal while staying true to it as an art form.

Speaking of Rutan, anyone like Alas? I thought musically it was killer, production wise OK but not super powerful, but i hated Martina's vocals. When she stays midrange like at the beginning of the first song, it was fine. But she goes into the high registers too often and not that well, to me. And the parts where it sounds like she's improvising (like at the end of the first song) just blow. But I think Rutan plays some of his best solos on that record.

vocals are way too prominent in the mix imo, to the point of drowning everything else out, at least to a degree that strikes me as inappropriate for what we're used to in a morbid angel album. i think it would be a fantastic production if it were a bit more 'balanced' for lack of a better term; it's certainly very clean and clear, but the way the vocals crowd everything out makes it seem like they were going for a more pop approach.

dave mentioned in an interview that the album is 'organic' or some such, but to me, the production seriously betrays that notion.

The reason that some of you are only hearing 30 seconds samples, instead of 1.5 minute length ones

is because iTunes Europe only allow for the shorter 30 second clips on the store site for each album / single.

On the other hand, iTunes USA allow for the longer clips to be played. I know - It's fucking stupid and unfair of

itunes to give a better service to one country than to another.... but THERE IS a way around it.

Scroll to the bottom of the itunes main front page. There are 4 small columns of links - and right at the end of the 4th

column is a link for "Change Country". Click on this, select United States - and then go do a search for Morbid Angel.

Voila!! Illud now has 1.5 minute clips for EVERYONE to hear.

(I don't think it will allow you to download files from the USA store if you live outside the states - but it WILL let

you listen to album samples, no problem. Enjoy. (I personally thought the clips came across as a million times

more promising when not limited to the paltry 30 second allowance - I'm feeling positive about at least 3/4 of Illud proving

to be a killer album. But, still.... RADIKULT?? Makes my skin crawl with embarrasment.... Got to be said)

Blades for Baal is easily the best track imo.

Existo and Nevermore are obviously MA songs, as well as 10 More Dead and perhaps Beauty Meets Beast too.

But the rest.... wow, I can't believe that kind of music has been able to come out under the monicker of Morbid Angel.... Trey and David, quit MA now while you still can and start a new band. Really... if you dare to create music with the Morbid Angel name like Too Extreme, Destructos and Radikult, then just create a new band and keep the integrity to MA. Not even starting about the lyrics... :frown:

I'm definitely going to download it before spending any money on it, and I'll check out the actual CD case in the record store.

You know, I'm happy Pete is not involved in this record.

Anyway, all the negativity apart - the death metal tracks on there are cool and I really like Blades so far. I think there's going to be some very interesting riffs and guitar arrangements here and there, but overall speaking I don't think it's going to top anything they've done in the past.

Pink Floyd never made 2 albums that sounded the same either. The fact that the 3 Tucker-era albums was centered around the same themes is a good reason for Morbid Angel to do something different this time. Plus I just don't buy the fact that 90% of the members of this board are hardcore into the occult and now "can't relate to the lyrics". That's just plain bullshit. I bet half of you never even meditated one single time in your life. Plus it seems that most of you actually like a couple of the tracks off the record already. So why not just relax and open your minds to what kind of new experiences this album might hold for you. You all keep saying that Morbid Angel is Trey's band and blah blah blah. We'll this is another record of his. Both Too Extreme! and Destructos where written by him from beginning to end. It wasn't David's idea. So why not just forget whatever quarrels you might have with David, and be happy that this band is based around the mind of a super a creative individual, who dares to bring something new to the table each time. You might get your Formulas part 2 next time anyway.

I know I said I wasn't going to comment on this again. But people, open that gay man's telescope and look at that burning bright sun. Realize how small and insignificant we all are compared to that. Rid yourselves of all this stupid negativity and wait for the album to come out. Then you might just be able to love this masterpiece for what it is.

- i don't have problems with david.

- i don't want another formulas or any other previous record done twice.

- i know those songs were written by trey which is the reason for my previous response.

- i'm not "hardcore into the occult", that's just silly.

- i've been doing yoga for over 2 years and am known with meditation but I can't see any reason for you to bring this up. It has nothing to do with any of my opinions on music.

Again, you're generalizing. I'm glad you think the new album is great, and hopefully I will change my mind on certain things when I hear the real deal.

Okay, here goes the roller coaster of emotions.

Prior to hearing Existo Vulgore I had my typical "pie in the sky" expectations for one of my favorite bands and how the newest album will be the greatest thing since sliced bread (which is always beyond what any band can live up to, but that's the way my brain works).

After hearing Vulgore in its entirely for the past month multiple times I really enjoyed it and that along with the Terrorizer "track by track" breakdown gave me a sense of what to expect (along with probably too much techno stuff and only 6 "real songs").

Listened to each sample this morning about 10X, took about 5X before I felt I could make an accurate opinion. Like almost ANY album I listen to, the truly great ones are the ones I first hear and think "hmm, this is disappointing" or "not sure about this". A few weeks later I know all the time changes, riffs, etc. and I can say YES or NO.

But after being a bit bummed out after the Terrorizer track breakdown (and that helped temper my expectations), I'm once again pretty excited for this. Most of what I heard I really liked. Obviously I can't say yet it will be one of those "classic albums". But the ones that have people scratching their heads initially and not knowing what to think are the ones that stand the test of time. There is more to discover and you don't bore of it within the first month.

I'm not a techno freak by any stretch of the imagination, but I have no problems with them trying to expand their sound in a non-pussified way. Few bands have been able to do that (maintain their core sound without selling out) so more power to them :greenie:

Telling us not to have an opinion on or feel something when we listen are to music is . albeit they are still samples they still evoke an emotion. good or BAD.

But hey we can have an opinion and/or feelings on it as long as they are positive and we love it!!! :necro:

Dude, I appreciate your posting your thoughts on the album and all, and think it's great that you shared some of your interview experience. But I feel like you're saying that those of us that are bummed out feel that way because we don't "get it" or have some weird pretensions about occult themed music or are just stubborn and not "allowing" ourselves to like it. I mean, "you might get your Formulas Part 2 next time" comes off as pretty condescending and preachy, even. Our reasons for thinking this is gonna be lame are AT LEAST as valid as your reasons for thinking it's a masterpiece. Some of us think the samples are lame just because we think they're lame, not because we have some mental block against the monumental achievement that is Illud.

You might be right, in some way, about the Formulas 2 thing. Maybe this is their Into the Pandemonium, what with all the WTF moments and experimentation. Pandemonium was what I'd consider to be a challenging record due to all the weird elements. But that was groundbreaking at the time...in this case, we've definitely heard death metal bands throw in electronic elements. So the groundbreaking-ness doesn't fit, but the WTF experimentation does. Anyway, eventually Frost came back with something dark (of course, their comeback was after many years, and when that happened they were younger than the MA dudes are now...). Shit, when I first heard Mayhem's "Grand Declaration of War" I was really thrown off by it and nowadays I dig it quite a bit.

The musical dumb-ness of some of the samples bug me, but some of the lyrical content bugs me at least as much. Just writing mundane lyrics I could live with; I still love Domination. But it's this SWAGGER that bothers me. Someone compared Evil D to a car salesman, but I hear more of pro wrestling announcer and even more of RAPPER. Seems like every other rap song I've heard talks about how rich they are or how badass they are, etc. That's how stuff like "I [used to be] Morbid" and "Radikult" sounds to me. Reading interviews with both Trey and Davy Davy Stick Thy Head in Gravy over the years it was largely about how they don't care how they're perceived by everyone else and don't need to be "cool" to anyone but themselves. But at least a couple of the songs' lyrics seem all about "hey, look at me, look how cool I am!"

Anyway. Shit, if this is their Pandemonium, I'd hate to hear what their "Cold Lake" sounds like.

I don't know about all. You but personally I like this stuff. Sure Radikult is a little strange to come from morbid but mea culpa wow! Trey writing hardcore techno on guitar is just brilliant you have to give him credit for that. Only morbid angel could pull this off. Picture cannibal corpse doing this, it would be a nightmare. But these guys know what there Doing and I'm really digging the sound on Too Extreme! Minus that bass line it sounds really energetic. Totally different from the standard death metal that you hear over and over. Like bolt thrower. Incredible band but there's always gonna be that Chugga Chugga riff which there always heavy and cool but it's all the same ideas. Morbid Angel are truly the pioneers of extreme music and pushing things to there limits!!!

I think Alas is really great stuff. Couldn't agree more though that the production needs help there as well. But yeah, musically I think it's excellent take on combining classical with metal. The vocals department needed a lot of help. Obviously I'm on board with the style that is implied there: operatic, airy, and female oriented to perhaps express that side of the self. The vocals however are pitchy in many places and if that can be addressed along with the production to create a more exciting mix, it's a home run.

Re: Amazon samples

Post by Conservative_Heretic »

I'll get an MP3 uploaded tonight that is the iTunes samples for those having problems. I'd try to combine the Amazon and iTunes together but I don't know have the capability to do that, maybe someone else could take a stab :grimsanta:

The more I listen, the more I feel this is going to be good. Insanely (Insanus, lol) different for sure.

May not be the best comparison but I keep thinking of Metallica's Black album. When it was released fans howled to the moon but it propelled them into the mainstream, for better or worse. It seems this is what this is about to be, no more just death metal, but breaking down the barrier and reaching out to a whole new group of kiddies who might not listen if it was "just another death metal band". I may not be using the best vernacular with these thoughts, but hope the idea is coming across.

I also think it is fucking awesome the discussion being generated just on the samples, when the album itself, or hell, when that single comes out on Monday, well, it is gonna be a fun time on the MABB. :xx:
Where did you even get the idea that 90% of the board are occultists? Th'fuck is wrong with you that forces you to behave so incredibly butthurt, throwing a mini-tantrum, over criticism of an album you had no part in creating? You're starting to remind me of that ass from VadimVon getting all bent out of shape if everyone isn't flat sucking their cocks (not to mention his own garbage) over everything released. I practice yogasana and meditate daily -- something wholly irrelevant to whether or not I would like, hate, or feel indifferent to this album. Those of us who do not like everything on the album are closed minded? Are you completely daft?! So, by your logic, then, being open minded is being completely devoid of negative opinion and standards. No one has any quarrel with David. You don't need to have a problem with someone to have a less than ecstatic opinion about something they do. Get your fucking head right, jackass.
He means that he's sure that 90% of this board AREN'T occultists, so they're are not into Morbid Angel because of their occult lyrics and therefore can easily do without them.
Just let him talk about himself for a little while. It's ok.

No, I did not know :waa:

Okay, then time to pre-order a CD, I guess it can't hurt to have 2 t-shirts

*** Also I wonder if that means they are making changes to it, or more have been ordered than had been anticipated. Maybe that pictures they had with the hard-on bearer holding it was just a prototype and not the final product. I kinda hope so as the picture on the website with all the items looks more intricate then the one he is holding.

It was just a prototype. I will get the "starcase" whatever that is from my local record pusher.

That sounds like a possibly cool thing, I want to say it is a metallic enclosure instead of a plastic traditional case. The Japanese version also has extra tracks on it. I am worried though that it may not ship with the problems happening over there. Could be just good ole paranoia on my part.

That is definitely an area I get envious of my southern neighbors and those across The Pond, they just seem to get really more killer and unique items than what is released here in the good ole U S of A. Though I also don't think the copyright laws are as stringent and as someone pointed out to me once Poland doesn't even have them. Don't know if that's true, but there sure is a helluva lot of unofficial shit that comes from that marvelous place.

A lot of those minute and a half samples are ridiculous. I'll find some enjoyment in the album, but there is nothing in there that really grabs me like A-H. There is certainly a feeling of let down here, and that, I feel, is the core of the negativity pervasive on the board over this album. Of course it is different. I'd hoped it would be, as each album was in the past. However, different on its own does not equal quality, gripping music and these samples belie a lack of said measure. It's not a David vs. Steve thing. It's not that its different or that any of us are closed minded. (In fact, the closed minded do not seem to last very long in this forum.) It's not even the inclusion of electronic elements. The original notion of electronic elements got me excited. The end result does not. There is no God of Emptiness on this record, nor a Beneath The Hollow, Nothing Is Not, Summoning Redemption, Where The Slime Live, Fall From Grace, Chapel of Ghouls, &c. There are no real stand-out songs. Perhaps the entire album will provide a redeeming perspective the long samples do not, though I doubt it.

I began listening with Covenant (though Domination had just come out) and was blown away. I quickly gobbled up the rest of the albums and listened, enraptured, to one amazing surprise piece of music after the next. The power, the feeling behind each riff, each vocal phrasing, each beat, each lava, and even every little, subtle nuance, reached deep into the depths of my psyche, gripped a very powerful part of me, and evoked such emotion that no other band, nor piece of music, had before. Formulas Fatal To The Flesh came out and, before hearing it, I was a tad nervous. I'd never heard Tucker before (and had a bad taste in my mouth from that laaaame Misfits reincarnation a few years before), but I was confident that at least the music would be awesome. I was fucking blown away. FFttF kicked my ass from here to the Abzu and back. A few years later, Gateways was released and I instantly fell in love with it. Then came Heretic, and although parts of it were very different than what I expected, it held true with some really, really good material and absolutely did not fail to grip me in the same way as every release prior.

Now, we have this. Some tracks seem good, some seem okay, a couple seem horrible. Nothing seems powerful like before. Nothing in these grabs me in the slightest.

Another thing I find intriguing are the lengths of the songs. I have not pulled out my track listing to compare side by side but it seems most of these songs are much longer than other songs they have done. This is partly in my mind why I am thinking we are going to be in for a pleasant surprise as there is so much more than we can get from the samples. I have been listening to this sample mp3 a lot and it really grows on me.

I know this is ridiculous, but having the samples, then also Existo and Nevermore full length on there together, that 22 minutes or so of new MA material coursing, it really is growing. I admit as well it does not grab the same way as previous incarnations of the Azagthothian Gospel have, but I sense it. Like Void wrote sometime back, I want to hear the whole thing with the booklet/lyrics in hand to fully digest the message they are sending.

having the mixed reviews is good for me as it makes me pause to reexamine and challenge myself each listen. I don't want to like the album just because it is MA and I don't want to have to lower my standards, as has been stated previously, yet each listen, I don't know, it is doing something and I feel we may not have to lower. But again, those who have heard the entire album have what seems to be radically different opinions.

In some kind of way I feel we are seeing inside Trey's mind in a way he has not shown before, for whatever reason, but this is truly his baby probably more so than any other album. (I am basing this off the interviews I have read so far)

I think the only song that will give me pause is "Radikult"--too bad it's not just a little electronic interlude instead of being the longest song on the CD! "Profundis-Mea Culpa" might actually sound quite badass live with real drums--the 90 second version contains some pretty cool riffs.
I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.

New HE is amazing!!! But let's not compare Hate Eternal to Morbid Angel. They're 2 totally different bands.
I think it's only for the U.S. ITUNES.

Can you tell if the drums are real and the "techno" is actually guitar and not effects? I am not be saying this right but I swear I read/heard that there was no electronics used and Trey actually did them using his guitar and effects pedals. I am really hosing asking this, but as a musician yourself do you get that sense? And the last 30 seconds or so on Mea Culpa just frigging shreds :bang:

Check earlier in the thread but it was posted how you can change that setting so you can get the longer ones if you are not in the US.

*** This
The reason that some of you are only hearing 30 seconds samples, instead of 1.5 minute length ones

is because iTunes Europe only allow for the shorter 30 second clips on the store site for each album / single.
