It seems I understand your views on the pirating of albums and official releases but what do you think about live bootlegs? I'm not talking about people making cash from selling illegally recorded live performances but people just recording performances for their own enjoyment and, if they decide to trade, the enjoyment of others.

To clarify what I said earlier; I don't support people downloading records illegally, but it's an impossible situation and as I said fighting against it is like bailing out the titanic with a teacup. Given that it's now inevitable, I think we'll see more bands deciding to give their entire record away for free online (perhaps via their own site if you provide a legit mailing email or maybe a donate button), and then hoping the real fans will buy the CDs and merch.



Re: the live stuff I've not really thought about it a huge amount to be honest. Just considering it now, people have always recorded live concerts, and assuming it's people trading stuff (rather than people or labels illegally releasing stuff to make money) I think it's cool and I admit I have fair few concert bootlegs I've traded with people. The only thing I have I suspect being an illegal concert bootleg is the Formulas Tour CD/Demo thing, though I'm not sure what label it's actually on as I haven't looked at it in a while.



I like to have control over what Mithras stuff comes out, and I guess I might feel pissed off if someone was recording our shows and uploading them, but only if

they have a shit camera angle or terrible sound or something, there's some cool fan shot videos which I'm really pleased people took the time to put up. Someone recorded one of our old live shows on a tape I think, and that got traded around a bit.



I guess the main issue in my mind is the quality control issue, and that's why some people get irritated at fan released stuff. I'm next to fanatical about quality control. For example the last show with Rayner as frontman which we did in 2008 was recorded with 2 cameras and multitracked, intended for a live DVD, but I just hate a lot of the performances, particularly the drumming, so I would never want the entire show to be released, which is a shame. There's one song I put on Youtube but the rest I can't bear.



Perhaps these kind of thoughts are part of why Morbid Angel haven't done a live dvd yet.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question Leon. I figured that the quality control aspect may have been the main concern. In a way I think that's the beauty of live bootlegs, its putting the artists under intense scrutiny at a time when they only have one chance to get it spot on. If the band is solid then the only issue would be the recording quality, but I don't think anyone is going to blame a badly recorded bootleg on the band performing.

Its kind of dependant on money but I always try to buy the CD of anything I enjoy, even if I have access to the MP3s legally through something like Spotify or Last.fm

I know that's why Karl Sanders has a big problem about people recording Nile gigs without permission.

I would definitely agree that. I think there were similar concerns for them when Entangled in Chaos came out. Wasn't that recorded over severeal concerts or something?

I only know of the download. If unauthorized show recording didn't exist, I wouldn't have this amazing set.
