What's up all you crazy Gods?

I have been rippin' and robbing for quite a while and decided it was time to give something back. So I'm currently working on a new Morbid Angel blog called "Where The Slime Lives". It looks a little standard right now but I plan to give it a serious visual makeover real asap. Some of the stuff collected on it is from this board. Some isn't.

Also, small nitpick but this isn't an official forum. The sentiment from the band has historically been that they had zero interest in such a thing, and that doesn't appear to have changed. If they ever change their mind on that, I doubt we'd be considered for official status either

If it means having to cater to the band members' sensiivities about their own work, quite honestly I wouldn't want it. Haven't lurked it in ages, but I seem to remember NBB leaned much more heavily toward flattery simply due to Karl's presence. Whether that's through active suppression or self-censoring I havent a clue, but either way it doesnt make for terribly interesting conversation in the long run.

I cant stand that shit. Ive stood up to the mods and Karl about it before. All the dick-sucking and censorship etc. It almost pleased me to see the place overrun with bots. Now not only are the majority of posts disobeying the 'rules,' they dont relate even remotely to the threads now either. I feel bad for the many good heads over there though. There are plenty of decent duders and chicks for that matter.

It's a fine line between constructive discussions and relentless trolling. I have seen many forums go down because of the latter. I think this forum is doing pretty alright though I rarely agree with most people here. That doesn't have to be a bad thing though.

Blatant and relentless trolling is pretty easy to pick out from legitimate criticism, I think. This board is mostly laid-back, and yeah, we've obviously got some pretty strongly opinionated people here when it comes to the topic of MA, but (here i'm referring specifically to MA topics in this subforum) I think we're mostly good about keeping things civil when disagreements occur, and there's plenty of people who are able to offer articulate and thoughtful posts that rise above mindless 'durr this shit sucks' and 'omgggg best evarrr' type drivel. Sure, those elements aren't wholly absent, but in the absence of an iron-fisted moderation policy, you're gonna get that on any music forum. Ultimately I think that stuff gets ignored and the quality posts stand out a lot more.

Of course, a little trolling isn't necessarily a bad thing -- it can still provoke useful discussion, and troll-feeding itself can be an entertaining distraction (see: DeathRoller, NDMG). If it comes down to it, the ban button is always a couple clicks away

But, I think if we were an official board with an actual band presence, you wouldn't see as broad a variety of discussion as we currently have (which to my mind is particularly important right now, considering we're on the brink of what's basically guaranteed to be a highly polarizing release). Dissent, either toward the majority opinions, or toward the band's output is a good thing. You'll meet some resistance but if you can defend or articulate your position without going balls-to-the-wall hostile, you'll do just fine.

Ultimately though, the band or its representatives are going to want some level of administrative control and I'm not sure anyone who runs the show here would feel comfortable giving that up; we've got 9 years of MABB tradition that have served us pretty well, and it would be a shame to see that get ruined or subverted by (a.) the policies and wants of, essentially, outsiders, and (b.) the kind of sycophantic behavior the 'official' stamp would attract on its own.

I absolutely agree. I really appreciate some of the more personal posts. I especially remember this one hard-on bearer who wrote a super acidic and spaced out summary of Formulas. Can't remember his alias though, but it was Pure Gold. Loved it.

it probably doesn't help that, in the early days of 1.0, his then-wife posted briefly. i think she shared some info via PM which was intended to stay private, and was promptly disclosed publicly without permission. that was DK's doing, i'm pretty sure.

I think I remember that. I wasn't a member at the time. But I have been thinking about it doing this blog. There's a lot of stuff out there on myspace etc. Some of it of a somewhat "private" nature. Stuff his mom posted and so on. I don't know if that would be... Wrong to post. It's on the net. But is something like a picture of Trey with his first guitar band related enough to use it?

back on the subject of NBB, i miraculously remembered my login and did some poking around. the 2005 awards are baffling so far; hektik beat NDMG in a 'most annoying' poll by a fucking LANDSLIDE, and the top ten posters were all MABB'ers (although a couple were converts when 2.0 went up). also the archived thread where piggy and house arrest complained about the MABB invasion is pretty hilarious.

"Sucked" is maybe a harsh word and I'm probably the moron here since I bought all their albums. But every time I go back and re-listen to something like Black Seeds it just feels blown up and almost... Stupid. Highly technical music presented in a no-brain form. I wasn't surprised when I saw Sanders in the Blessed documentary. He talks like his music sounds. I'm actually listening to the new one right now (Those whom...) and I was listening to FFTTF before that. I almost feel sorry for the band.

This is all just my opinion of course. Take it for whatever it's worth.

i still dig on catacombs and BSoV every rare once in a while, but as i've grown older, nile as a whole have appealed to me less and less. i'll always have a little nostalgia lovin' for them, as they were one of the bands responsible for turning me on to DM back in the late 90's.

I've browsed the Nile forum a few times but don't care enough about the band to register. Karl seems to have a very unique style of posting (with lots of returns) and some interesting ideas on bootlegging, piracy and the music industry.

I'd be surprised if he was making enough money from Nile. They're pretty big for a death metal band but nowhere big a business as a business as a band like Cannibal Corpse, who do make just about enough money to live off. I've been doing quite a bit of browsing at the Derek Roddy forum recently and it's becoming increasingly clear to me how hard making a living in the music industry, especially in extreme metal, actually is.

I don't know anything about this, but I thought he had a decent job in a car manufacturing factory - like $20+ hour. Unless the hard-on bearer has an extensive family you'd think that would be enough to get by with a relatively simple lifestyle (not sure if he lives that way, but I do fine on a meager wage as a single hard-on bearer).

But after reading that Derrek Roddy thing that was posted here, I do know that Roddy was insistent that you basically cannot make a living playing death metal. So maybe there are other factors at play.

If you search for "Mithras" on there you'll probably find the offending posts. To be fair I've got a lot of respect for Karl, he does what he wants the way he wants and he's done really well with Nile. I have no idea if he makes a living off death metal, maybe he works in the downtime? I expect he gets the lion's share of the royalties as he wrote most of the music and lyrics though.

But I can tell you for sure that almost no bands make anything resembling "a living" from music. I work in the music industry running a music magazine (Derek did a column for us years ago oddly) so I make a living off music in a way, but I hear all about the woes of the industry on a day to day basis, and it's not a happy time for most. People ask me constantly about "why the fuck haven't I pulled my finger out and done another Mithras record yet" - the reality is right now with things as they are financially I chose to spend time working and doing stuff with my family over making records that will be stolen 9 times and bought once and I'll certainly lose loads of money on. That's not to say I'm not making any more records but you can see what's slowing me down at least.

That WAS an interesting read. I also did not realize, not sure how this is related, but follow my chicken, Deicide has sold more than Morbid Angel FUCKING DEICIDE!!! Cannibal Corpse being on top was a surpriser as well but I have been out of the loop a long time. I hear CC now on LiquidMetal (please Metallica just-go the fuck away) and can actually understand them, lol! Hammer Smashed Face is the quintessential song for me, I just love that groove, but I never listened to much CC in general.

Goddamn I havent been to nbb since the mabb downtime between 2.0 and 3.0 and even then it was just a couple of times.
