Anything about Trey's FX that set him Apart?

Post by Drum Solo »

I know nothing about guitars, but I have noticed that there's a lot of talk about Trey's effects. My question is this: Is there anything in particular about gear that makes you guys in the know scratch your head and wonder "how'd he think to use that?"

More specific - is there a Trey/gear-ism that's entirely unique to MA? Or maybe something that just wasn't common when he first started with it but now is because it blew so many minds?

The obvious thing to mention would be the micing techniques he uses for some solos. Stuff like having a industrial fan blowing between the amp and the microphone. If you search around the net a bit you can probably find some more info.

Its also been discussed on here before about Trey being one of the first extreme metal musicians to use seven string guitars - someone else might be able to elaborate on that.

Been jamming MA all day, and I've never heard another DM band use the effect he does in "Sworn to the Black" so openly. It sounds like an airplane flying overhead. Very arena rock, except somehow it sounds evil when MA does it.

edit - i'm talking about the e album here, at the 2:45 mark

Thats just a flanger/phaser/univibe. He borrowed that idea from Van Halen. In the 70's that was a big thing.

I use mine on some rhythm parts. Sounds awesome with a rolling kick pattern.

it also sounds awesome over David's vox when he's following pattern of the "flanger." I love how they rise and fall together. :bang:

So that type of thing is pre-programmed for each song, right? I originally thought it might just follow octaves or something, but that sounds a bit too perfect.

No it is a stomp-box (pedal) set to a slow sweep and a medium depth. They play those type of grooves roughly in the same tempo's so he does not turn the contols for the different songs. He already used stuff like that in the pre-altars days.

Has a lot to do with how you attack the strings also.

So is it pre-set, or does it differ from show to show? I can see how a bad performance would mess it up either way, but I'm curious nonetheless.

Either way it's very cool. Especially with the DM vox, and the double bass drums grinding in the background, which I had not noticed until now :thingy:

edit: I just read an above post that went unnoticed, so disregard the first part. :shake:

At about 25 seconds into the video David says they were able to use sweeps on Domination. He also says sweeps were virtually unheard of. Was this the case at the time? Or do you think he means just in death metal. I would have expected that neoclassical and jazz-fusion guitarists had already started to use sweeps by that point.

On a side note, does anyone know if that video is the full interview? I would have liked to see Trey's demonstration of said sweeps.

I assume he was referring to that weird sweep picking/tapping thing Trey does at the end of Slime.

Even if he was talking about regular sweeps, I believe they still fairly unusual for death metal at the time, at least compared to today with groups like Origin substituting them for conventional riffs.

Substituting riffs with sweeps :frown:

Feels like wankery to me.

basically sprinkle a little radioactive fallout over some MAHOGANY RUSH, ULI JON, HENDRIX, let that be further infected by SLAYER / POSSESSED speed picking and then much will be revealed....

The Live-album by Frank Marino / Mahogany Rush is fantastic. You can really hear in Franks solo "Electric Reflections of War" that Trey picked up alot from him. How do you like Uli Jon Roths soloalbums? I think Firewind is phenomenal!

I actually like all 3 of the "regular" ELECTRIC SUN albums....his vocals are a bit much to swallow for me, but the techinques, patterns, and especially the sounds created for the guitar parts even without the use of effects is totally brilliant....actually some of the tones he gets with that symphonic stuff can be cool at times as well, but there is just not enough guitar in that stuff to keep my interest...
