I realized i might have come off as being too negative or what not.

I think i have just outgrown MA. I've been following them since i heard TKC and Abominations. And seen all the transitions.

Void described this MA as a different one.. To me there have been more left turns in their evolution. Somewhere between F and G I just did not connect to it anymore. H brought back some old vibes. But i do not feel it anymore.

The darknes/uglyness/grimness if you will, left the art.

That said, I ordered the Box, the single and will probably buy some more stuff for sentimental reasons. And now i'll give Covenant another spin...

that's interesting, i actually didn't know that about bob doing most of the pattern-writing. i guess one could make the argument that he tailored the writing to the drummer (and of course, counter-argue he simply wanted to go in a different rhythmic direction and so on), but that's neither here nor there. good to know, in any case, although now i feel like a bit of a jackass for harping on that so much :redneck:

at any rate, i think you're right. pete or no pete, there's just not an awful lot going on here and it's hard to imagine he would've had that dramatic of an impact on the final product.

I spent a lot of time with those guys and i do consider them friends. I feel bad for Steve as he got a lot of crap on the web. And people just did not know how things happened. They changed some arrangements after Steve had recorded the songs. Thanks to studio magic. So some things did not make sense anymore drumwise. Steve got the bad rap for that. While he was already back in Ohio.

2nd day: this song already bores me. I like the aggressiveness from David, but I miss the real growl - this is more of a shouting voice, but I think it's cool.

Other than that, nothing else catches my interest anymore because the riffs are just simple and dull. :oldryan:

I don't think its bad at all and I've been a fan since Altars came out. TBH I just couldn't get into Gateways or Heretic, Gateways sounded too plastic and drawn out and Heretic has way too much filler and atrocious production. It's good to see Vincent back in the band, to me he was Morbid Angel, he just added so much to the band and his persona alone made him God-like. Don't get me wrong, I saw MA twice with Steve and both times I was blown away, such stage presence, savage vocals and the perfect moderrn-day death metal frontman but Dave Vincent transcended all that, he's almost like a cult leader and I think he was the quality control in Morbid Angel and maybe Trey does need to be reined in now and again (Heretic anyone?). This song reminds me of Covenant in parts, the vocals are aggressive, it's catchy, the vocal patterns are very catching (he could be singing about gardening for all I care) and ticks all the correct boxes with me. Can't wait to hear this album :bang:

Thats was no close to F or G nor do it was like covenant.

The song is good but not better than F or G.

and Vincent changed.

Change is only good when results in betterment.

Change is inevitable. Whether we like it or not is something different.

David's performence is the one thing that stands out for me. It is convincing and agressive.

It was obvious he was going to sing this way regarding the concerts of late. His bassplaying sounds solid too.

I am totally unimpressed with the riffing.

Agree. I've listened to it again a few times today and it has grown on me. Will sound amazing in the context of the album. I think a lot of people's expectations are way too high for this album. Still sounds like death metal to me and that's the important thing.

I always analyze music, it's the thing I like about it and many times you get to find awesome things in the music that are hidden between all the layers.

I've always been analistic and maybe over analistic when it came to MA, but that never mattered because it all matched up. Listening to their older records in such a way always brought me great pleasure. I found a lot of creative hidden things that were brilliant! I think it's also become my second nature because of my workfield. Yet I can still simply enjoy music without listening to it with an "audio engineer" ear. If I just try to enjoy this song without analyzing it, I come to my previous conclusion that the vocals are very strong, the drums are pummeling but lack a little depth and the riffs are stale. And that's a pity because MA's guitar work has always stood out from any other dm band.

That's just it for me, IMHO.

I think a lot of us are to some extent trying NOT to be disappointed (which is as bad as trying to be). Morbid Angel is special to me so I found myself trying to look for the good points about the song, etc. Overall I come back to the same thing Bob, myself and others were saying when the track listing came out. It's a competently written and performed death metal song. But Morbid Angel, to me, was always more than a competent death metal band. They were something more. This isn't transcendent, to me. It's pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan of Heretic mostly for production reasons, but even that album felt a lot of the time like something deeper than just any other death metal release.

The vocals - I do like the energy. But I don't like the voice. I resent the lyrics because they go against what the band has always been about. I actually have felt for a long time that David Vincent hasn't really deserved to be in the band. He went against what they were about, he came back and disregarded the F-H albums, and he's a Genitorturer. Now he's writing goofy, lame lyrics and prancing around the stage with a vinyl pentagram shirt. The lyrics not fitting with what I guess is my idea of the band is something that I was prepared for, and have experienced already in the form of Domination. What I'm dreading is hearing the rest of the album and finding out that now maybe even the music itself doesn't "flow" with the true purpose of the band, either. This new song...it may not blow me away or feel right, but it doesn't feel "anti" Morbid Angel like Dave's lyrics do. There's supposedly a song that sounds like Marilyn Manson...that sounds anti-MA to me. But this song, it's pretty cool. I can't say much more positive than that.

Sure we're overanalyzing it. How can we not? It's been eight years and a lot of us have been on a journey with this band for 20 years and more.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I can't imagine how anyone would say this is the best death metal song of the last 8 years. No offense to the hard-on bearer that said it. I just don't hear it. I'm happy to hear a MA song that sounds like death metal, after all the techno rumors over the last few months. But we've seen releases from Immolation, Hate Eternal, Nile, Maveth, Repugnant, Unanimated...I could go on. And those bands...the active ones kept putting out quality death metal. I never saw Bob Vigna post a lengthy justification on how hardcore techno is just as extreme as death metal.

Morbid Angel used to be at the top of the genre IMO. Now they've been away so long that I can't take for granted that their shit will dominate, which is a sad thing.

Agreed on all points that slimegod made. This song lived to expectations. I am talking about the expectations based on lyrics, song titles and artwork. Bland, soulless song.

Performance wise, it's sure is 'pro'. Convincing vocals, good guitar tone, bass guitar is there, and drums are ok (except for the extra clicky-ness), no doubt about that. But the song...pure mediocrity, which is much worse seeing that it's coming from Morbid Angel.

The vast majority of Death Metal has sucked since the very beginning. And from 2003-2004 onwards, nearly every release from EVERY death metal band has been absolute shit. I say this with full confidence.

Much as I hate the overall sound of Heretic, some of the songwriting is killer, and Cleansed in Pestilence in particular. On that song some of the left hand stuff is fairly conventional Morbid Angel, but the picking patterns on that tune are really interesting.

You really think Pete's coming back? I have my doubts. I also wonder if there will be a J album. By the time they're done touring this record they're going to be near 50, Pete may already be there.

Just occurred to me...are they the oldest active death metal band out there?

If you say so. I like a bunch of songs off of the first HE and off of I, Monarch more than some of the songs on Heretic. But it's a totally different style. Hate Eternal is more nonstop hatred for the most part. They're not going for the Morbid Angel range of tempos/atmospheres. So I can't compare them as better or worse except to say that they've come out with top quality stuff in their own right. Saying that their best moments don't come close to Existo Vulgore...I don't see it. If you do, then enjoy. My head's just fine.

I would never tell someone to shift their attention to Hate Eternal because the new Morbid sucks (I don't even know if it sucks yet). I listen to HE for one feeling, I listen to Morbid Angel for another. It just so happens that listening to that new Morbid Angel song might not give me the feeling that other albums of theirs did. Listening to HE won't fill that need either because it's different.

I disagree about Nile, but opinions are opinions. I don't love all their stuff equally but I think their latest album is really good.

I agree that most death metal sucks, as with any other style of music.

If you're disappointed in the quality of death metal overall, I highly recommend you check out Maveth. I dare you to tell me it's crap. If you like old school death metal, go listen to the Repugnant album. I dare you to tell me it's shit. Check out some of the tunes from the latest Immolation. You might not love them like you love Morbid Angel (and neither do I). But if you tell me there's not real quality and fire in that stuff, if you tell me that nobody has come close to Existo Vulgore...then we'll have to agree to disagree.

Maybe these eyes were never for you.

Hmm...

It indeed feels a bit like another band... don't like the production too much, I think the guitars on H sounded better. Drums are tight as to be expected from Tim Yeung, the problem is he's not Pete. The riffs really do sound a bit uninspired, they sound like leftovers from Nevermore (which kicked ass), but I have hopes that the rest of the songs will be better.

I have no complaints about the vocals though, a bit better than the ones on Domination.

Hmm at first I got excited about this new song, but I must admit, that for someone who calls himself 'the riff daddy' the riffs are pretty lame.

They only seem to accompany David Vincents dominant vicious vocals, instead of being dominant themselves! The balance between the vocals and instruments have changed imo.

I don't like the dead stops either; I think that's a sign of lacking inspiration.

The drumming is good imo! Much better sound and very solid overall.

So is positivity.

If I were to have said "Wow this is amazing! In all aspects this new song is brilliant in every way!", people here would still have the same response they have now. There's plenty of positive feedback in this thread. I think it has some very cool things going on and really interested in the rest of the album, I actually can't wait for it's release so I can experience the entire concept and context. But while analyzing it, I also have some remarks and I'm completely free to have them. I also explaind why I analyze music when I'm a fan of it.

But you continue to believe people can't think for themselves and have their own opinion. We're just sharing ours, wether you like it or not.

As if people cannot make up their own mind... Nevermore did not blow me away and this one doesn't either.

They are not bad but to MA standards not more than ok. I've been spinning EV very regulair since it was posted hoping it would grow on me, I really want to say it is awesome. But i'm not gonna say that just because MA is my favorite band.

Still i am looking forward to hearing the whole package in the order they intended it. With the booklet in my hands.

BTW:
6. '10 More Dead'

Also composed by Destructhor and based on the same kind of sludgy crawling as 'Where The Slime Lives', Vincent describes this one as “another really heavy song with full-on seven-stringed guitar”. This even has a classic thrash break in the middle.
Could this be the song Tim Played at his drum showcase?

I prefer this to Nevermore for sure. It sounds like it sites somewhere between C and D.... that is aside from the fairly modern sounding production. I'm not saying that it's blown me away though.
