Vocal line is better than never more.

I think I have to come to the conclusion, IMHO, that this is a totally new Morbid Angel. And for me, it doesn't have anything to do with their previous work, except for maybe some riffs that were a bit Heretic-ish. Of course I'd have to hear this song, and the rest, in the context of the album and maybe then it will make sense to me. But judging only on this one song, it feels like a new, different band.

The celestial event known to us as "Morbid Angel" is over. As we extensively discussed in the other thread, it's something else now. It's disheartening, but I wish them monetary success

and as mentioned before, I am sure they will have it. An era for the neo-metal kids indeed...

Ironman, we could go back and forth all day. This is of course so subjective but then again there is such a thing as a collective subjectivity of like minds, otherwise the concept of a fanbase wouldn't exist. This forum wouldn't exist! One may find themselves defending the ethos of something from the past but the remaining question is does it stir something in you? Does it raise hairs or "take" you to another level of thought? I can only answer for me but I can also remember that we are still a collective perception more or less about this. So I must also suspect that others feel the same way as I do on some level. Some will show it others I think will fight it. And some off the beaten path will perhaps be in sync with this new MA.

After few more listens Existo Vulgore reminds me of Zyklon and Myrkskog. I haven't listened to those bands in years so I might be wrong.

The good: sounds along the same vein as Nevermore. Reminds me of some of the less popular (and underrated imho) songs on Domination. The bad: the chorus gets a bit old. If it were any other band I might not give this more than a few listens. I hope the rest of the songs are on par with or better than Nevermore.

People trashtalked the fuck out of MA upon the release of BATS and FFtF apparently, which are excellent albums even by MA's standards, so I guess this'll be no exception.

Pretty decent, actually. Guitar tone reminds me a bit of a ballsier version of the tone on BATS, while overall it sounds like one of the less obvious D tracks filtered through H's sensibilities; Tim's drums are a bit on the clicky side, but by now I've given up on MA ever getting back the killer drum sound of C anyway. I'm liking it - the huge confidence crash I had after seeing the...er...interesting song titles has been alleviated quite a bit by this, and I'm looking forward to my starpak of I arriving in about 6 weeks' time

Riffs are decent, drum sound sucks, Dave's vocals rule, and the solo is cool. I really am not too keen on Steve Tucker's vocals, so that kills G and H for me a little bit. Pete's a better drummer than this hard-on bearer, so the fact that he's not on here anymore is cancelled out by the fact Dave is on here. After that all that's here is Trey's guitar playing (can't fucking hear the bass, what a surprise) which is cool, but the riffs aren't really that exciting anymore. I'm always interested in his solos though, so for me it's just a mediocre song with a cool solo. Here's to hoping that the next Autopsy record kicks complete ass.

the drumming doesn't stand out much, don't care for the vocal delivery, the bits of lyrics i've noticed have been bad. guitar tone is good and the solo is pretty sweet, some neat riffage in spots, but that's not really enough to save the whole which just comes off as morbid angel impersonating themselves. on the surface everything appears to be morbid angel, for the most part, but it's missing something crucial.

it kills me to say it because i really want to love the new material, but what we have here simply isn't that good. i haven't given up entirely, maybe it will grow on me, maybe it will make sense when it's put in context.

void put it very well, i think.

it's basically domination taken a couple steps further. it's evocative of like a really pissed off hard-on bearer, rather than a mighty force of nature. it lacks power.

I agree with Void, Trans. Music, and some points Mr. Waters makes.

I don't think the drumming is that bad though, and i think the vocals are very agressive.

But somehow the riffs are to easy, meaning to mediocre. Almost like they went "oh crap we need to do a couple of Deathmetal tunes more.. any riffs left we did not use on Nevermore..?" There is no magic there. They go through the motions, it is groovy and fast but soulless. And for that you cannot blame David IMHO.

I felt H traded in some "spirit" in for technicality with the polyrhytmic guitars and some songs were to spun out though there was a purpose to it. EV sounds uninspired. All the dead-stops throughout the song, starting it up again and again. And then that stupid riff at 2:00. A bad Dawn o/t Angry without getting it. The groove is cool but it sounds empty, drained of spirit.

On the surfase it is cool, but it does not carry me off.

Not bad, but disappointing me a bit !! Hey, the wait was of over 8 years ! And I was expecting something really impressive, but it's not ! The song is not bad, and it surely has to grow on me and to be listened to in the context, as some of you have said, but something is missing in my opinion. On the spot I'd say that I like the sound, it's clear and we can hear the bass, the drumming is great even if it's not Pete, but I don't really like David's vocals, the guitars arrangements are quite poor compared with previous albums (the right and left guitars are playing quite the same lines the 95% of the song while MA was one of the first bands doing very different right/left lines) and where are the dark vibes, the evil and spiritual lyrics, the sick riffings ??

But I'm still impatiently waiting for the whole album !!!

on the subject of the drumming, it's of course highly competent as yeung is certainly no slouch. there's nothing technically wrong with them per se, but they way it fits into the overall composition it feels as though they're just there to fill in a sonic gap. they don't seem really integral to the piece, it's real dialed-in, and strikes me as thoughtless, lacking creativity. the kind of percussion you'd expect from a second-rate death metal act; it's there, and it's done correctly, but it doesn't really add anything artistically.

suddenly, i'm reminded of the stark contrast between immolation with alex hernandez, and immolation without alex hernandez. yeah, i know i've beaten that dead horse into dust over the last 7 years, but it's especially relevant here!

I think Steve is a better drummer. Though I do know what you mean. But i know how things went with him stepping in. And the following recording. The new one gels much better because they changed some stuff logistically. Doing some good preprod with finished songs. Also do not forget Bob writes most of the drum pattern. He wrote most of alex parts too. But since they lived closer to each other they jammed more regulary. Steve lives in another state and all have normal dayjobs. Logistically more difficult.

To be honest, I think Pete 's drumming was always solid but not that creative. Don't get me wrong he is the king. His beats are an inspiration. But fill wise he is not that creative. Probably because he always created a solid foundation for the guitars to go crazy while he himself just played (a monstrous) backbeat.

I am convinced Pete's drumming would not have made a difference. The riffs and arrangement are just not up to par.
