i think there is too much of the text on album cover and words are very big.

Yeah, if you're gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that
Teh new cover is confusing. The symbolism is unclear and it looks just like a bad joke. Not bad, but not magnificient either.

Funny how opinions differ.
I like the cover of H very much. All the symolism. I do not like the artwork of the booket itself however...
Gateways i do not like. It is not one of seagraves best and looks childish. and the tray inlay screams amateur photoshop.
I wonder why they made the Typography like it is on the new one.
Because of the weird spacing i read:
ILL VD DIV IN V M IN SAN V S
ILL VD
DIV
IN V M
IN
SAN V S
The spacing is so off every graphic designer get instant eyeache. This must be intentional.
Also all geometric and sigil stuff looks interesting.
The EP looks nice but more befitting a progressive blackmetal band..IMO.
All in all it is again different and food for thought which is good. I like it.
I think i might be buying al lot of tour T's again.

Yep, I do like the sigil stuff in the new one.
I still like Heretic as well. I agree with the booklet, it's very easy and simple/ugly. Really anxious to see what the new one looks like.

My own couldnt differ much more from this. For me, Gateways is the best MA cover by a long shot. My opinion is very much informed by the music as well. I think artwork/music have a excellent relationship.
I hope the Illud cover will take on a whole new meaning when the music is released.

Well sir, i was talking about the "fully computerized album " part. Not about the end result being good or bad.
A lot of people prefer hand-drawn art without excuses, but I think that computers have also brought some new good options to the table. I like them both
And by the way, I'm still undecided about the album cover's final design too..

Re: MORBID ANGEL UNVEILS COVER ARTWORK
according to me, whats pinching me the most in this are the colors, so un-death metal, as far as i understand morbid angel music, as far as i understand art, it speaks more than words and this just out of the track, MA always try to do something new but as ive mentioned above no more "lava" feel . Both of the album arts have weak and fancy colors. There is another thing wrong in it, which i am unable to explain in words.
As being an artist ive said that, just my opinion.

Re: MORBID ANGEL UNVEILS COVER ARTWORK
Just to throw some more 2 cents out there - I read several comments about it not being "death metal" enough and not being in line with their previous offerings. I think since it has been 8 YEARS since their last album it is good to really mix it up with this one. Plus I venture to say that they have transcended death metal. That is such a fucking limiting nomer for them anyway. Not knocking or taking away from death metal as a genre, but as you all know about me by now, Morbid Angel is much more than just your typical death metal band to me and transcends all others. It is the living embodiment of true personal and spiritual freedom: an apex of what it means to be oneself and to throw off those limitations society, family, and others so often put upon us; either willingly or not.
To me, and this is only my opinion, when Formulas came out the traditional death metal vibe was gone for a far more superior sound and elevation of their music. It has taken on a much more spiritual plateau lyrically than most of their previous works. Now with David back in, this may well change as his tastes seemed to be more of a traditional Satanic strain when it came to the lyrics. Not ALL of them obvioulsy as Chapel is pretty fucking Satanic and anti-xtian
Personally I am glad it does NOT look like another typical death metal cover as they are far removed from such a simple concept. They have become godlike via their own talents and they carry again that tradition of every album sounding so different, I think with the enormous gulf between this album and their last: We are going to be in for one HELLUVA surprise. For better or worse, but is not going to sound like anything they have ever done before. We have had a great discussion already concerning the Latin phrasing being used, and going with that strain of thought/title the cover makes sense. (Though I am still wondering why the Prophet/Messenger/God has only 3 arms, but anywho)
And yes, I am excited but also nervous as well and the B-side title: Well I have read earlier where Trey has really gotten into the techno-partying lifestyle and his MySpace had that techno style music for awhile. Ultimately though, who knows. This is one of the myriad of reasons I, along with most other members of this board I dare say, love this band so much and I proudly wear their Blasphegram inked on my left shoulder: They are true innovators, and leaders.
The views and opinions on this thread are great.
Ultimately though, it is fucking Morbid Angel and the album WILL BE

I actually like the album cover alot, even more than the 7" cover. I don't know how but I get a Covenant-vibe out of it, with the real photograph and the sigils. The 7" is too much Watain/Behemoth-ish.

Re: MORBID ANGEL UNVEILS COVER ARTWORK
I always liked the fact that MA covers were NOT typical DeathMetal covers. Not the usual guts and gore type of stuff. With all MA covers (exluding G imo) i get the feeling of a deeper thought behind it. Even the weird Domination cover. Of which i like the alternative LP version even more.
Also while i understand the feelings towards "digital" art, i personally have nothing against it. I like to paint and draw, but i also create stuff digitally. The same passion goes in the work only the medium is different. It is the same comparison as a classical player dissing a electric player because of his use of an amp and effects, or a piano player dissing a keyboard player for getting his tones out of modules.
Either it touches base with you or it doesn't.

While the other covers seem to hold a deeper meaning (to me), G is just to superficial for me. I do not think it is ugly, but i still think Dan Seagrave did much better ones. The only song i can link it to is Opening of the gates. But compared to the imagery of Formulas it does not impress me that much.
To me G comes to close to a typical DM cover. No disrespect intended.

All the talk of the new artwork aside.. i am glad they did not change the logo as was talked about a few month back.
And i like the blasphegram thingys on the hands.
Already this one has me looking at it more times than any cover recently. There is the John Dee sigil in it, a mandala and some sigils i cannot make out because of the quality.. interesting...

Exactly. The magick is working already, to coin a phrase. There is much more to this cover than initially meets the eye. The more I look at it, the more I appreciate it, but as another member said I am very interested to HEAR it and see if it blends together as well as most of the other covers have.

It's not an exact representation of a game level, which means a Quake 3 Arena map. Obviously it's a representation of Annihilation and some sort of gateway into it. But when an interviewer asked Trey the thought behind the cover art of Gateways, he said that it was inspired by Quake 3 and that it could be a Quake 3 deathmatch map.

Re: MORBID ANGEL UNVEILS COVER ARTWORK
Thanks
i could not remember what you told me about it.

LOL the cover of gateways is an representation of a game level. (can't remember which..
Void help me out here
)
Pesonally i have not found any relation to the music.
But it is nice to see the different impressions art has on people.
It's not an exact representation of a game level, which means a Quake 3 Arena map. Obviously it's a representation of Annihilation and some sort of gateway into it. But when an interviewer asked Trey the thought behind the cover art of Gateways, he said that it was inspired by Quake 3 and that it could be a Quake 3 deathmatch map.

fully computerized album art

Morbid Angel now enter a new era, just like the rest of the world, called, the FUTURE. with all the new things that come with it: change and evolution.
Idiot. "Progress" is no excuse for inferior art.
Well sir, i was talking about the "fully computerized album " part. Not about the end result being good or bad.
A lot of people prefer hand-drawn art without excuses, but I think that computers have also brought some new good options to the table. I like them both
And by the way, I'm still undecided about the album cover's final design too..
Well, that sounds a lot more agreeable, then.

Some of you people are putting way too much thought into this. It's just an album cover.

WIth all of this shit flying around about the cover, can you imagine the vitriol that the actual CD will generate?
I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.

Blessed generated that, as did Covenant and Formulas even more.. All monumental masterpieces
Honestly i am kinda sad the cover was revealed before the release. In the old day you bought the album and got the whole package in one time. That made for an other first impression. I know in this day and age that would not be desiarable marketing wise.
I'll wait until i have the actual packaging in my hand before listening. Even if there is a dl avaliable.
Wrong.

Yeah, they are.
It's only what you make it out to be. If you want to read deeper into it, knock yourself out, but at the end of the day, it's just art for a collection of music.

If this album is even half the masterpiece that those were, I'll be beyond satisfied.
