music creation PC died, recommend me some M/Bs

My music PC died the other night.

My investigations seem to point to the motherboard.

Won't POST and also won't do the RAM scream if RAM is removed.



So seeing the rest of the stuff in it is new, I'm just going to get a new Motherboard + RAM + case (probably).

I'll load it up with the new M/B get XP to load & back-up various settings & take snap shots of my vsts & progs etc.



Then I'll rebuild, unless it works really well with the new M/B (but I doubt that).



Any recommendations for music production motherboards?

The one that died was an ASUS.

I've read AMDs are good (from many music-prod blogs etc)

I'm also thinking of maybe moving to Windows 7.

Gah, my previous rig around six years ago was a Pentium 4 with an ASUS mobo. And that ASUS mobo of died on me as well! Man, my respect for ASUS mobos has really gone down these days...and to think they were the shit when it comes to Pentium II/III mobos like 10-12 years ago.

Yeah all of my filters and plugins work well. Revalver, Audacity, FL Studio and Kristal AE seem to work right as rain.

Gigabyte X58A-UD9 and an i7 930 processor

6 gb ram

and a big box that has good ventilation.

but with the M/B being so new, I will have to look into changing HDD stuffs....

Need a new vid card and also a PATA card, as my drives are IDE, but new shit is all SATA.

Getting all this this weekend (hopefully)

I've been making notes on our project ideas... so hopefully get stuck back into that very soon.

not anymore, but being that my old compy is 5-6 years old they were IDE.

i ended up getting 2 2TB SATA drives to replace all my IDE stuff.

these IDE drive will now be external backup drives.



i'm near completion of the setup - can't wait!



back to the doom with Tom, the chuggin with Zim and the black metal with Haf

so it looks like I need to go to Win7... bit unsure about this.. but the reasons:



* Win XP x64 was (to many companies) a short lived O/S - which is kinda bullshit, been around for about 9 years i think.

* despite everything working nicely, the really required hardware will not work - my sound card has fake XP x64 drivers and I'm having problems with ASIO4ALL (it's distorting really bad, and I think it's the soundcard causing it).

* So I decided to try my M-audio Fast Track Pro as the soundcard, but of course this too also doesn't work. Reading many forums, blogs & the M-audio site - they don't support Win XP x64... fuckers... There are hacks but I couldn't get them to work. I just wan to get back into my projects...



So my plan is i'm cloning my current Music Production partition to another spare drive. As a test, I'm going to then upgrade one of the copies to Win7 x64 and see how that goes.

A lot of forums I found issues with it, but the recent ones i've found have said that the SP's and updates fix many issues Win 7 had with audio programs etc...

XP x64 isn't as aged as XP 32bit, nor as stable. Support for it is terrible as well. Win7 x64 really is the way to go.

If you have 4gb ram or more, go Win7 x64 route. If not, install 32bit one. What you don't want though is to install 64bit daw host. Not yet anyways.
