At that time Robert heeg was one of the only intelligent reviewers there. To bad he left to start WATT.

I completely agree with what was said above. But a lot of fanzines thought it was not underground enough and way to slow. They obviously did not listen to Day of suffering correctly....

This was the period Trey slammed the phone down on a lot of interviewers who did not get it.

That album taught me how to play guitar. :redneck:
At that time I only read Aardschok magazine.

Robert Heeg gave Blessed are the sick a 10/10 just like Wim Baelus did for Altars.

He praised them for not copiing themselves and said something like this: "It's not the full frontal attack like Altars, it's like creeping up with a knifestab in the back: equally deadly".

I still think it was the correct observation. :grimsanta:
Hmm he now sometimes reviewes cd's in Nieuwe Revu. A music all-rounder sotospeak. I think Wim Baelus was the biggest expert there, immediately recognizing all classics when they came out. You play in Thanatos right? I think Stephan Gebedy also knows whats up.

Maybe because of the title track? It's indeed a different approach; more sophisticated instead of simply relentlessness. I think the album is brilliant all around even with its recording flaws here and there. You can hear clearly that the titletrack was first only the lyrics with the music lateron built around it. What really got me hooked was the rhythm of the words blending so fluidly with the rhythm of the riffing like on Abominations and Thy Kingdom come. I hope this will be the case again on 'I'.

I remember a lot of the reviews of Blessed at the time. They were split 50/50 between people who thought it was a new level of genius, and people who totally hated it. They hated the instrumentals, they hated the slow passages, the title track, and they hated the band.

Agreed.

Another thing which is easy to forget is at the time, Morbid Angel absolutely thrived on getting up people's noses. Not in a cute way or anything, either. They'd go out and slate a lot of other bands and labels, they'd release albums and proclaim them masterpieces, and were self-assured far beyond the horizon of arrogance. Obviously they backed it up with the shows and music, but a lot of the industry was rubbed up the wrong way and just had it in for them.

Extreme sides of the emotional spectrum: because they felt threatened by Morbid Angel.

i think it is crazy that there are people who feel threatened by this music, this ideal... and then there are people who are totally into it and feel freed by Morbid Angel. there is so much difference in this world. it is really quite interesting. :thingy:

heretic style riffing (nevermore sounds very heretic to me)

no idea what kind of production - i don't think erik will produce anything that sounds like H

i really hope the drumming is good, and i hope tim does a good job with the cymbals - that's always been one of my favorite things about pete

Damn, Angela's posts are so stupid that I feel my IQ getting flushed down the toilet.

Anyway, beyond any reasonable expectation, I hope the new album contains elements from all former albums, including the eerie atmosphere from the beginning.

Also, I hope David reaches his Covenant-style voice again, which was the most fruital grunt he thusfar recorded imo.

I expect total badass riffs and ultimate independence from the rest of the genre.

I have a feeling, man, a feeling that the new album will shred the pants off of your grannies. A feeling that this new album will be surely remembered.

(I tend to lean toward the more....epic approach to most things, by the way...) :thingy:

I agree, it suggest having sex with a woman while she´s menstruating, rather than it´s original intention.

Angela: of course it will be badass and out of the B O X : it´s Morbid Angel goddamnit: that´s exactly what they´ve been doing all these years. Everybody already knows this, and nobody expects otherwise. Try to say something ontopic, that´s new, with content, PLEASE!

Furthermore, within this out of the B O X context: I must say that I´m still not very confident with the idea if the formerly mentioned noisy techno hardcore influence. It´s been ok as an intro for gigs, and hopefullly will only surface as some seperate tracks, but I hope it doesn´t effect the main music -too much-.

I think that hardcore, or any other mechanized music style, has a much lower level of creativity in it and would bring the music down. I´m not waiting for another Berzerker record or something like that.

Having heard from a reliable source that Trey got into it through his -former- 25 year old girlfriend, didn´t bring down the worries either.

Maze of Torment (on Altars) is also somewhat of a remake, since they changed riffs and lyrics.

Another example is Invocation of the Continual One on Formulas, which they also played in their "demo" days. With a different name, different lyrics and a few different riffs.

I don't really think Maze of Torment is a remake, it's a whole other song. They didn't reuse any riffs, lyrics or song structure.

Also, Maze (who posted in the wrong thread :redneck:), think this song with faster tempo and blasts. It will sound a lot more Death metal.

Maybe, but the riffs in general is very much old Slayer and Venom approached, wich still is very good but not really what i expect from Morbid Angel.
