For the last several years I’ve tried to meal plan which actually saves a shit load of money on groceries. Still eat out occasionally but now it’s more of a treat where I don’t worry about the costs rather than “fuck I don’t feel like cooking and I can’t really afford this but fuck it” type spending.
Credit card gets paid off every month regardless of how big it is - went through a period several years ago where I had a sizable debt and interests and had to dig myself out of it, which took a few years that really sucked. Continuing to live like a broke college student and only occasionally splurging on shit helps tremendously.
When I had to get a new car a few years ago I could have gotten a new car but decided to go the used route instead and actually got a really good deal on a car that I’m still driving 6 years later - not having a huge car payment (that was paid off about 3 years ago) helped set more money aside.
I also have my bank account set to automatically transfer money every week into a savings account so I don’t even think about it - has def come in handy for some “rainy day oh shit fund” type stuff over the years.
Using an insurance broker to actually get a good deal on an umbrella policy has probably saved me thousands of dollars over the years where as before having everything separate was fucking killing me.
Of course there is also 401k investments which nearly took a shit during the turd administration but have since tripled in pre-2020 value since. But, I don’t ever touch those funds since I would like to actually retire one day.

not much point, can't buy a house on my salary, took too long to get established to ever be able to retire. maybe if i hit the lottery and get a career that pays 3x what i currently make i'll think about it. but the more likely case is that i'm just gonna work until i die in 20-30 years, oh well

i am not great at saving money in general, but i am good at saving towards goals. i have never taken out a loan or been in debt of any kind (unless you count university student debt but in australia that is indexed to inflation only and run by the government). i bought my car, a used 2020 model mitsubishi xpander, in february 2022 for US $17,500 cash, and a brand new lambretta scooter for US $3,000 in 2021, so those are the only significant "assets" that i own (i really miss my 2004 bmw X5 i had during covid). i don't have any investments. i spent US $20,000 on my wedding last year. i'm pretty broke at the moment having just done the japan honeymoon, and booked tickets for europe midyear, but i'm owed a hefty consulting paycheck soon, of which i plan to bank US $10,000 straight into the savings account.
so i don't know, i think i'm not bad at saving, but certainly not good either. i don't buy stupid shit or gamble or take out loans, but i do spend money on friends and family a lot, and always choose personal life quality, happiness, and visiting people over planning for retirement. every year i spend thousands and thousands on flights, upwards of $5,000 and some years over $10,000.

i am pretty sure it could be done much cheaper these days since i have tapped out of all that stuff for over ten years and we are in the world of amazon web services and AI ... i still just have the same hosting account with the same company since ... 2005 i guess, and it is in the realm of US $120- $150 a year or around there. dusty sent $50 in may 2023 so for three months of last year he funded the site. what can we take form that? he lurks. he lurks and breathes heavily

I belive that savings accounts are a proper, responsible tool to have in life. I use it for car repairs, broken house appliances, and truck stop knick knack shopping. It's also great for when criminals steal gas from your riding lawn mower. Fun times to have a savings account.
